I think you should record a video of you making a beat from start to finish. From the production, to the mix, the master - basicly the hole process. @@NavieD Just wether the kicks and snares are 'right'. The kicks always sound quite heavy with the beats I hear. In my head, the main thing with snares is just make sure they're short and not too 'toppy'?

I'm new to all these techniques. By the two samples that you showed i can as a vocalist would be able to use both but the min is it since I don't have any instrumental experience. the max would be a little too much so I would incorporate a variation so that my vocal would fit as well m as accents.
how can i train my ears to know how to eq like that? im still somewhat new to producing as a whole. you just know how to cut and boost freq to fit a style. just experiment?
Yeah unfortunately there is no real guidebook when it comes to cutting or boosting. Every song is different, and requires different treatment. Over time, you just become better at hearing what is missing, or what is overpowering. I would definitely recommend experimenting
This is great! Thank you for shedding some perspective. I learned some new things as im relatively new :) The saturation/compression effect - is this a plug-in ? Are there any that you recommend? Also, when you layered drums, did you use different sounds(kick in initial layer vs second layer, for example and same for hats and snare)? Cheers
My go-to saturation effects are Reels, Decapitator, and Saturn And yeah, I use different sounds with different characteristics when layers to experiment and see what new result I can create!
I can make old school hip hip by ears, I don't need to program drums are hi hat are try to use loops, I been make beats long enough, I know the sound a the different era a hip hip
@@NavieD idk. The internet and volume of content probably. Not as much look studying the past to move forward. I started making boombap in the 2000s from guys like Pete Rock, Alchemist, and Premo. Then mixes got really clean and bright and I abandoned the boombap for a polished sound. Funny now its back in style albeit still a bit of a niche audience.
@@devine_noise yeah I have a hard time seeing that style going back into the public ear, it's got it's niche group but there seems to be a lot of people that like it. That lofi beat channel on UA-cam always has thousands of people listening By the way, it's nice to have another geezer like me here. I started in the 2000s also, started off with boom bap stuff as well (which is how I eventually came to work with Joey badass and a few other artists of similar style)

Notice that sound right in the beginning of the beat. There is a layer of warm noise that is used in the beat, so that helps. Also, saturation is key

I think what you are referring to is playing around with the velocity. Basically, make every other hi hat lower velocity for that type of effect
