    Pauline Tinsley--Turandot
    Bernanbé Martí--Calaf
    Ruth Huang--Liù
    1974
    Edmonton
    ============================
    The role of Turandot is, and will always be, a vehicle for great dramatic sopranos to show off their steely high notes, and make no mistake about it, Pauline Tinlsey does just that. But Tinsley does more than just offer vocal fireworks. She sings with profound musicianship and commitment to the text in a way I have never heard from any other Turandot. For my money the opening of "In questa reggia", where she describes her ancestor Lo-u-ling, is every bit as mesmerizing as the second half where she unleashes the true power of her voice.
    Bernabé Martí brings heft and lyricism to the role of Caláf, but is a little lacking in refinement.
    ==============================
    Pauline Tinsley is definitely one of today's Pirate Queens (divas who made few studio recordings, but whose in-house or broadcast recordings are highly treasured.) Was there anything she didn't sing well? Her Turandot is the equal of any other soprano I can think of including Nilsson's. Nothing in the music fazes her and she makes Turandot as believable as possible. The top notes are all successfully taken, there is no wobble anywhere in the voice, and she uses her voluminous chest register when appropriate (her "Si, la speranza che delude sempre!" is growled harshly at Calaf and the crowd. Marti (Caballe's husband) is an excellent Calaf with a secure, ringing top register. He has no problem joining Tinsley on the unison C at the end of "In questa reggia" or taking the optional C at "No, no, principessa altera". His "Nessun dorma" is very persuasively sung

    I was at the Saturday performance. On the Friday Marti's wife Montserrat Caballe gave a solo recital that was stunning!

      agreed, when the knighthoods go to all these just ok-uk conductors and singers nowadays - but a kathleen ferrier and an alfred delller - the most singular english voices of the 20th century- are , of course, omitted.(sorry, they where not russian oligarchs...)@@Marcel_Audubon

      Josephine Barstow was made a Dame ( DBE) in 1995.
      It is a pity that Pauline Tinsley was not awarded some sort of medal/ title in recognition of her service to opera internationally. For many years she had a strained relationship with the Royal Opera. She explained this in an article I read as being due to an incident when she was understudy for the principal soprano in a Verdi opera . The whole thing was only finally resolved when she was given the role of Santuzza opposite Domingo some years later. This was broadcast on tv and led to other roles for her. She has very loyal fans in the UK who were glad to see her succeed and remember her fondly.
