  • As May 2021's Holyrood elections edge closer, how are Brexit and the pandemic playing into the changing Scottish political landscape? Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
When Scotland voted no to independence - who would have predicted that just six years later, if a referendum was held again now, polling suggests a ‘Yes vote’ would win out.
Back in 2014, Brexit and the Covid crisis were still a way into the future and Scots voted for certainty and the status quo. That's now in flux.
The UK is out of the EU, against the will of the majority of Scottish voters, who also apparently look kindly on the handling of the pandemic by Scotland's political leadership.
The leader of the labour party travelled to Edinburgh today, and voiced his opposition to another referendum.
The Prime Minister has already made clear he doesn't want to lose the union on his watch and has said another referendum won't be granted.
Can that position hold if the SNP do well in parliamentary elections next year?
Policy Editor Lewis Goodall reports on a familiar constitutional battle now facing its latest twist and turn.

Do your research... for crying out loud. Scotland was a country from 843 AD - England became a country from 927 AD.
So not a few hundred years ago at the declaration of arbroath.
Not a very great start when you can't even get simple facts correct. I understand its hard for some of the Brittish and English to hear that Scotland was a county longer

Whoa! There! Whose "National Broadcaster", might that be which you speak about? Almost from the incorporation of a group of Radio Amateurs who registered as a private corporation in The Kingdom of England, under English law as, "The British Broadcasting Corporation", with a view to selling their wares to the public. Let me explain. "Wireless" ,communication, was in its infancy and was driven by "Wireless Amateurs", including Marconi. Now these Amateurs, "Hams", usually built their own rigs. The hobby was mor5e to do with experimenting and building your gear than just talking to each other. So when the more scientific Hams among them were trying to set up business manufacturing "Wireless Sets", (a set of Transmitter & Receiver), there was virtually no market for their wares as Hams built their own "Wireless Sets".
So these more scientific Hams thought up a great idea. The norm was for one Ham to communicate with another Ham and directional aerials helped to boost the signal. However, sometimes there would be a group of Hams in a network and they used non-directional aerials. Their great idea was that to boost the market for their manufactured wares they thought up the idea of transmitting signals of interest to the general public by use of non-directional signals and the word, "Broadcast", joined the English lexicon.
Strangely, although these wares were just a "Broadcast Receiver", the term "Wireless set", stuck even although it was no longer a transmitter Receiver SET. The usual claim is that the first "Broadcast", Station was 2LO, (a Ham Radio call sign for London), the actual first Broadcast station was 2MO for the English Midlands as the station was in an ex WWI army hut outside the Marconi Factory in the English Midlands.
They broadcast news, mucic and weather reports and the ide took off like a rocket. Now in those days the Westminster Government licenced Ham Radio operators and Westminster, never slow to reach into our pockets for our hard earned began issuing Wireless receiving Licences with the licence fee being payment for permission from HM government to receive Wireless signals.
It did not take Westminster long to realise the great potential for this new medium for government propaganda and they gave this new Private enterprise, "BBC", a Royal Charter and an annual grant of taxpayer's money. In short the Government became the still private corporation's paymaster.
That is still what it is today. The licence fees go to Her Majesty's Treasury and The Westminster Treasury makes a grant of taxpayer's money to the BBC - - - THE BBC DOES NOT GET THE LICENCE MONEY AND IT NEVER HAS.
The BBC is directly funded by a grant of taxpayer's money from the treasury by the Westminster Government and Westminster are the piper who have always called the BBCs tune.
But ait! The taxpayer's money to the BBC doesn't just pay for UK broadcasting by the BBC it pays for the Worldwide BBC overseas Service the World's firs and always largest UK propaganda Worldwide service.
Today it is the Westminster governments propaganda against Scottish independence and we Scots are paying for the Westminster funded BBC to campaign against Scottish Independence - - - but get this - The BBC's greatest feat of propaganda is to brainwash the whole World to believe the licence money pays for BBC programmes. It doesn't it goes to HM Treasury and we all pay with our tax money to get government propaganda beamed into our homes.

At 1:38 the reporter states that Scotland has not done any better than England in combatting Covid. The numbers tell a different story : - Infections / million population, Scotland 4,315, England 5,849; Deaths / million population, Scotland 458, England 658. Scotland's infection rate is 74% of the rate in England and the death rate in Scotland is 70% of the death rate in England. Testing results in Scotland are freely available whereas in England they are not. SNP's/nationalist grievance culture only harms Scotland and seeks to divide where in fact there are many more similarities than differences between the countries and constituent regions that make up the UK. The Devolved Greater Manchester and London mayors don't exactly love Boris either but appreciate the need to work in the current environment for the best of their regions rather than in some non existent fantasy world. Quiet diplomacy rather than constant rage and England bating might actually deliver more for Scotland. Your premise that pro union parties agree with WM on each and ever issue is just false. Absolute bullshit!. 313 years ago Scotland's ruling elite, only land owning aristocrats were parliamentarians who were made bankrupt by Westminster and illegally sold away the legally sovereign people of Scotland's birthright.
I'm sick of telling Neo-Fascist, Brextremist, Tory & Unionist ignoramuses their own true history so here is a vet short potted history:-
English "Navigation Acts", involved the Kingdom of England in European wars and left England with massive national debts and the English Crown/parliament were on the point of bankruptcy. A London Scot called William Paterson, (in the employ of Sir Robert Harley the English parliament's spymaster), instigated a subscription scheme to bail out the English Crown/parliament.
The money raised was not, though, given to the English crown/parliament it was retained and used to set up a private banking company called, "The Bank of England", because the English Parliament banked with it - they have never owned it.
Next time we see William Paterson he is in Edinburgh instigating the "Darien Expedition", which was heavily subscribed to by the Scottish wealthy landowner/parliamentarians. At the start the English state and the Dutch state together pledged to put up 50% of the funding for Darien but they pulled out after the Scottish had bought the ships, engaged crews and bought some stores. The English/Dutch pull out left the expedition understored and underfunded and doomed.
Not to mention the English crown ordered the Royal Navy and the King's Soldiers, (already at Darien), not to aid the expeditioners. Needless to say the expedition failed but it did not bankrupt the Kingdom of Scotland as is so often claimed and at the time of the union the Kingdom of England had massive National debt and the Kingdom of Scotland no national debt , or very little if any.
Next we find William Patterson and his very good friend, the English author , (employed by Westminster as a political pamphleteer , (and both close friends employed by English Spymaster, Sir Robert Harley), again in Edinburgh working to bribe, threaten with legal bankruptcy, and physical harm to sign the Treaty of Union while the actually legally sovereign people of Scotland were rioting against the treaty in the streets of Scottish towns and cities.
How do we know this? Well Daniel Defoe, the English spy, government pamphleteer and author's letters back to Sir Robert Harley are still extant in the English held archives.
Now above all else the people of Scotland, not those rich landowning parliamentarians were sovereign and against the treaty being signed. Secondly Scotland had indeed had a hard time as there had been 7 years of drought and poor crops but Scotland, the kingdom, had no national debt and the Kingdom of England was on the point of bankruptcy and the evidence for all that is still extant - we can still thus access it.
BTW: I failed to mention there were English Troops massed at the English/Scottish borders and an English Royal Navy Fleet hove to by the mouth of the Forth.
The English claims of Scottish bankruptcy are easily shown as false claims and believe me I have often asked those Englanders making claims about Scottish Bankruptcy to show proofs of their claims - I'm in my mid 80s mow and to date none of them has furnished proofs.
So, there you go - the claims that the Treaty of Union was freely entered into are bogus and the Treaty of Union an illegal act as Robert Burns showed in his song, "Siccna Paircelk o rogues in ae Nation". The Scottish public in Burn's day knew the truth and just like the ludicrous Englander claim that, "England stood alone", it is balderdash.
Yes England stood alone - EXCEPT for The Scots, The Welsh, The Irish, The Free French, Polish and other free Europeans and of course the entire British Empire and Johnny come lately USA who let the allies pay for the USA way out of the great depression before they came to fight what was actually their own corner as Hitler's U-boats were sinking USA shipping in USA waters but the USA people never got to know about that.

EU is about the right degree of ‘union’ between nations.
A union of practical stuff but retaining sovereignty, a veto and no 1 member has much over 15% of vote, so it’s all by negotiation and compromise.
UK union = total power to an 85% English parliament with no veto for others.

The people in an independent Scotland would have a choice of joining EFTA with Norway, Lichtenstein, Switzerland and Iceland. Or they may choose to join the EU.
In an independent Scotland the Scottish people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not be governed by the government that another country voted for.
With Westminster there is no choice for Scotland, the only choice is do whatever the 533 English MPs vote for.
The day after the 2014 Scottish independence referendum David Cameron announced EVEL (English votes for English Laws) at Westminster he was frightened that the 59 Scottish MPs would out vote the 533 English MPs. The English MPs brought in EVEL and created a second class of none English MP at Westminster.
The powers that independent countries such as Holland, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland etc. have in the EU are lots more than Scotland controlled by Westminster.
They can even vote to leave the EU if they want to. Unlike Scotland in the UK where an English MP Boris Johnson that the Scottish people did not vote for and his nonelected puppet master Dominic Cummings gets to block the Scottish people's right of self-determination.

For many years we’ve had people complaining that “we didn’t vote for a no deal scenario” or that whatever deal was on the table “wasn’t Brexit enough’. Would it not be sensible to negotiate the terms of independence & then put that to the Scottish people? Just asking.

@Graeme Roberts OK, I get it that your view is to leave the U.K. no matter what but my understanding is currently the polls suggest a 55/45 split in favour of leave. That still leaves a considerable minority who may not share your view. Whilst it may be true that an independent Scotland could sell its water & electricity to England & Wales (I’m not sure if there are any cables & pipes running to NI) that would be down to negotiating a price. I don’t see why you believe that an independent Scotland would be debt free; surely Scotland would be liable for around 10% of the U.K. debt at the time independence was gained? Anyway, I return to my previously posed (& ignored) question - what would the reason be to give a good deal after the vote?

I think the discussion would be better informed if we stopped talking about independence (who is getting independence from whom here) and instead talk about dissolution. Most Scots now seem to actively want to dissolve the Union, most English simply don't care either way. I don't get the need for the acrimony. In the end, the referendum in 2014 was a pretty close run thing and I accept that it would have been closer still if it was not for the EU effectively saying Scotland could not dissolve the Union and join the... er ...Union. The forces pulling the UK apart have little to do with Brexit and we should see Brexit as a symptom and not a cause of the dissolution of the Union. If the Scots wish to bring the Union to an end, let them do so honourably and proudly. Say you want to dissolve it, acknowledge it was good for both nations for 300 years (or just ignore the issue) and move on. There is no need to say its ending is all the fault of the English. The logic of that would be if England had treated the Scots 'fairly' they would want to stay in the Union; but most Scots don't want to stay. My problem with the SNP (as a political party and not Scottish patriotism) is that it is a grievance driven party. It sees insult sleight when there is none and seeks to create a false historical and contemporary narrative of English perfidy, because like all nationalist parties it needs division and to create a sense of 'other'. Sturgeon is no different to Farage. All polling and research indicates while the English would be sad to see the Union dissolved, they have no desire to force the Scots to stay in it. No government in Westminster would seriously consider forcing Scotland to remain in the Union against its will. The SNP 'chip on shoulder' politics will just make the inevitable dissolution negotiations harder when they have to be held in the next few years. The best thing would be a dissolution referendum with a clear proposal, followed by a Scottish general election with independent Scottish political parties not associated with the Anglo the centric Labour, Conservatives and LibDems etc representing the Scottish political spectrum. That would hopefully bring to power a non-grievance driven party to negotiate an amicable separation. Scotland would do well NOT to include the EU in that in any way. Doing so will just create unnecessary antagonism. Scotland will join the EU I have no doubt, but involving a foreign power to dissolve what had been a mutually agreeable union for most of its history would be wrong. This settlement will be nothing like the Good Friday agreement and neither side needs foreign powers as guarantors.

I understand that sentiment, which is why as a Brexiteer, I thought this was a poor decision. I would prefer the Union to endure, but I believe that argument is lost. What I don’t want to do is have a remainer like bleating go on for years and end up, as we are, with bad faith negotiation. I believe the UK was on the moral high ground and negotiating with the EU in good faith (even if occasionally unrealistically). We should not have conceded the high ground and Johnson showed poor judgement in doing so.

Only partly true. It is Brexit itself and post Brexit Tory actions and Tory responses to SNP in the Commons ( and wider feelings not confined to Westminster & London ) that have caused the idea of Union with rest of the UK ( numbers-wise England ) to be de-valued in certain quarters in Scotland ( as reflected in polls showing boost to Scottish independence from UK ). Brexit is likely to deliver the opposite of the practical "advantages" it's advocates promised in 2016 Referendum ( other than formally & technically quitting as a member of the EU, which is now a "done deal ).

Remind me - how's that all still going down in Greece, Portugal, etc?
Swapping 'Tory' austerity for SNP turbocharged Austerity doesn't seem to most numerate Scots to be a great idea, much less the idea of being 'in dependence' of an increasingly bereft EU, whose largesse it can Ill afford, much less we being able to qualify for membership, given our parlous economic state. The union that came into being in 1707 (and in many ways effectively in 1603), was as much, if not more, a Scottish invention as an English one. It gave Scotland a share in an emerging empire they would not have got alone. The Scots proved to be remarkably good imperialists, slavers and colonists and Scotland did very well out of the arrangement. With the end of the Empire, Scotland has no real use for the union and so its no coincidence that as the Empire drew to a close in the 50's (when over half of Scottish MPs were Tory), Scottish nationalism took off. The unwillingness of the major parties to adopt some form of PR and the Thatcher/Major and Blair/Brown years where Scotland was too often ignore killed the union. The Cameron/May/Johnson years are just the death rattle. The thing is, most English people have tired of the moral grandstanding of Ulster Unionist, Irish, Welsh and Scots nationalists and in particular their characterization of English nationalism as some from of neo-fascism, and their conceited self-delusion that the likes of Sturgeon have provided much better government than that seen in England (they seem to have had their eyes closed for 13 years). The English are increasingly happy to see the union Scotland wanted in 1707 dissolve. Polling indicates a majority of English no longer mind if the Scots, Irish or Welsh vote to leave. And many - perhaps not a majority yet - would be happy to see a hard boarder along the Tweed. The SNP attitude may just make that a reality.

First, Scotland is not recognised as a sovereign nation by the rest of the world so leaving the UK is nothing like the UK leaving the EU. Second, to become a sovereign nation, Scotland needs either a rich sponsor (as with other recent new sovereign nations) or a credit rating to borrow money. The EU would be very reluctant to be a sponsor as Spain would vote against it because of Catalonia. If someone persuaded Spain to accept it, and the EU did sponsor Scotland it would have to impose the Euro and set Scotland's fiscal policy from Brussels. If Scotland went completely independent without the EU, where would it get its credit rating from so it could borrow money? The UK is in debt along with 20+ other EU states so anyone thinking it can take a share of UK reserves without taking a share of the UK debt is simply not understanding how the financing of governments is achieved in the world. At that point the rest of the world will view it as "Who wants to risk their money on the SNP's political experiment with no proof of the SNP's ability to run an economy?". Current Scottish companies will move headquarters to UK and Edinburgh's financial services will crumble - why would people from outside Scotland leave their money in what would then be a foreign country?
The SNP dream referendum addresses none of these points, and pretends they won't be a problem.

Sigh. Spain is on record saying they have no objection if Scotland gains independence by constitutional means. That argument was debunked in 2014. As for sovereignty. The people are sovereign in Scotland and every nation has the right to self determination. I suppose you were saying the Baltic States weren't sovereign in 1991, eh?

If Brexit finally happens and thus United Kingdom leaves the EU, they should leave it for good. (Continue here)
When British meant freedom, they meant Brexit. It's happening. We now all know what Brexit will be. But we have to admit one thing that would protect their freedom (and potentially all the Brexit's theoretical benefits) if done, and that is: After Brexit, United Kingdom should never return to the EU again, ever.
    Why? Because of two reasons:
    - Firstly, how most Brits wanted to leave EU. This is evident in the votes on June 23rd, 2016, where the majority of the votes chose to leave the EU. Which only confirms that the British wanted UK to leave EU, which formed Brexit of nowadays.
    - Secondly, Brexit is believed to have only several all-considerable upsides and thus claimed by many Brits to utterly lacks a real downside. This is only theoretical, however many Brits (especially the Brexitter and virtually all pro-Brexit guys) have supported these theoretical benefits and even claims that Brexit would be among the best things happened to the UK, without ruling the risks and possible consequences.
Yeah, this is more like it. If UK leaves, they should leave for good.

The Lord God protects them who live by his will. Where to live by God’s will, a man must always put others before self. We must not worship and pray in the way of religions, including that of the Pope and Christianity; because religions are all led by the many blind guides and false prophets who are misleading us. As adult men, we must each live by the true teaching of Immanuel (called Jesus) - Here follows a summary of his true teaching…
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (Jesus, at John 4: 24) -
“In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (John 5: 24) -
“Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (at Matthew 7: 15-16) -
“Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father’s planting will be rooted up. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.” - (Matthew 15: 13-14) -
“Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) -
“I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall wander in the dark; he shall have the light of life.” - (Jesus, at John 8: 12) -
“Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…”
    - (Matthew 24: 4) -
“Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) -
“You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - (John 8: 32) -
“When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you.
In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard.
Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him.
This is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven,
Give us each day our daily bread,
Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us.
And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever.
    Amen.
For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) -
“Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) -
“Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) -
“Is there a man among you who will offer his son a stone if he asks for bread or a snake when he asks for fish? If you then, bad as you are, know how to give your children what is good for them, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him!
Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.- (Matthew 7: 9-14) -
“I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage.
The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) -
“I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) -
“I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) -
“Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) -
“I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) -
“The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) -
“Though many are called, few are chosen.” - (Matthew 22: 14) -
“An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself.
Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) -
“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) -
“One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) -
“For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) -
Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Friday the 18th of September, 2020: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Let it always be you.

The disintegration of the UK is imminent due to a number of 'perfect-storm' factors in play. It was inevitable really. I mean, can you think of anything that was particularly united about it from its inception?
Having said this, how can any small nation thrive in the modern global landscape and still maintain its autonomy and identity? Isn't it ironic that, just like a millennium ago, Scotland's replacement landlord will be a Dane: Anders Holch Povlsen is currently Scotland's biggest private landowner, already owning 1000 square kilometers!

Why does everyone from opposition ministers to mainstream media to the English Public always go on about once in a generation but never mention that n 2014 the Better together camp said “the only way to safeguard EU membership status was a vote to remain in the Union”
Amazing that that seems to be forgotten about.
    Now look where we are..

I don't get you the better together side lost, so what relevance is their commitments? It'd be like me saying i was expecting more wealth distribution this year from Corbyn even though Boris won lol

da wei what don’t you get?
the no to independence vote/better together won in 2014, and it was based on the scaremongering to Scottish people that a vote to leave the United Kingdom was a vote to lose our EU membership. Fast forward to 2016 and boom, Scotland gets hauled out of the EU.. some pledge from the better together camp.. so what I’m saying is the once in a generation bullshite doesn’t cut it. Circumstances have changed and the people of Scotland being sovereign should decide not Doris and not the Tories in Westminster

JimBeam If the Scottish people want to join the EU that’s up to them. England have interfered in the sovereignty of other nations for way too long.

Torta Queso Scotland already had a referendum in 2014 and voted to remain part of the uk. Anyway, more scots voted for unionist parties than the snp. More scots voted for Brexit than the snp.
