- What do you do when any attempt to take out the hostage taker will result in the detonation of a bomb that he's attached to?
"The Cokeville Elementary School hostage crisis occurred on Friday, May 16, 1986, in Cokeville, Wyoming, United States, when former town marshal David Young, 43, and his wife Doris Young, 47, took 136 children and 18 adults hostage at Cokeville Elementary School.
David Young entered the school with his wife transporting a large gasoline-filled device that appeared to be a bomb. The couple corralled a large group of students and teachers into a single classroom. David attached the bomb trigger to his wrist and threatened the group that he might, at any time, move his arm and ignite the bomb.
After a two-and-a-half hour standoff, the children were becoming restless, so the teachers preoccupied the kids in the form of movies, games, prayer, and books. David became increasingly agitated, and decided to leave the room. Before leaving the room, David attached the bomb's detonation device to his wife's wrist.
When the children became increasingly loud, Doris Young began begging the teachers to settle the group down. At one point she lifted her arm sharply and the bomb went off prematurely, injuring Doris while David was out of the room. Returning to the scene, David shot his wife, then himself. All the hostages escaped, though 79 were later hospitalized with burns and injuries, the majority of which were severe."

Gasoline
cleden based on the story and my own logic, im fairly certain they just got a plastic jerrycan, filled it with gas, rigged an electrical circuit to it, and called it a day. All it did was create a huge fireball (thus the severe burns) but nothing else. Had they realized that they would have gotten much better results from something like a propane can (or anything with a much more powerful shockwave plus shrapnel), this story would have ended differently. That’s just my 2 cents.
best bomb ever, 11/10
Meestasqueed They probably had a few gas cans considering the radius, but yeah, it was probably that simple.
I guess the miracle is that tons of kids sat on the edge of the "magic square" staring at the bomb, and the only deaths were the crazy people.
The dumbass who was right next to the bomb didn't even die instantly if there is any "miracle" it's that everyone in this story was a complete moron
Yeah i'd say the miracle was that none of the innocent were killed in all of this. Especially the kids that were so close like you said.
@@GuyInHisOwnWorld If she was standing in an 8 ft by 8 ft square, that means she was just 4 ft from kids on each side.
@@ooftygoofty5711 More than likely would have survived if medical attention was given in all honesty. Gasoline only burns at 65C (50f) which isn't near enough to kill a person (for the amount of time that they would have been present), fire is one of the slowest ways for somebody to die anyway, seeing as though usually people die from the inhalation of carbon dioxide or monoxide if the combustion is incomplete, so really the gasoline bomb wouldn't have worked in the first place, the only deaths would have been after the incident due to injury.

in 2016, a bunch of the schools in my district and state got bomb threats called in-likely as part of a nationwide threat campaign. we were in lockdown for over an hour and i remember my classmates crying and praying. luckily all of the calls were false alarms. stories like these make me more and more grateful every day that there wasn’t an actual bomb in my school

Hostage situations are rarely planned and usually happen "in the moment" so to say. Like outside of wars and organized crime almost no one is actually willing to go to this level because it's obviously a horrible thing to do. Plus there's the inherent issue that hostage taking is like the dumbest way to get a demand since you're literally right there and even if you get your ransom the moment the hostages are released you're probably going to be arrested. If you want a lot of money quickly then the better way is usually just more normal crimes like robbery or fraud.

It's definitely a complex area, but in all fairness it is probably for the best that those who defect from criminal groups to tell the police at the "last minute" aren't held too accountable. The threat of punishment might deter them otherwise.
When you were talking about scarring collage stories, reminds me of a tale my uncle told me, basically a guy broke into a weebs dorm, the week grabbed his samurai sword, the robber mocked and threatened him, then attacked him, so the weeb CUT OPEN HIS GUT. But sharp metal is still sharp metal and who has that sharp metal? Not the robber.

What documentary did u watch
If that was the case I'm pretty sure the gasoline wouldn't have blown at all, the main reason for nobody dying from it is that normal bombs are made with high-explosives and incendiary rounds/bombs have oxidizers that help the fire burn things it would normally only flash over and singe. That's why the woman standing beside the thing didn't even die from it, I think the only burns people received was because they had gas splash directly on them when it went boom and that's why she was burnt from head to toe but nobody else was. That's just a guess on my part though because I haven't seen the actual incident reports to know for sure

"A textbook miracle there" lmao
Unsolved Mysteries had a segment on this event. They left out a lot, like Princess and the two other men's involvement. The wife being put down and one man being shot in the escape.
There were other things that they did highlight. The bomb was poorly made. There were cut wires, blasting caps that were soaked thereby made useless. The "Magic Box" kept the children away from the weakened bomb's blast radius. The fumes also prompted the windows to be open, venting the fumes as well as much of the blast. It also allowed a rapid escape.
Given that it started leaking gas fumes part way through the hostage situation, poorly made seems about right.
