  • Deputy Terminated For Sustained Charges Of Inappropriate Conduct While On and Off Duty
    News release #17-225
    Who:
    Pinellas County Sheriff's Office
    Professional Standards Bureau
    - Administrative Investigation Division
    Patrol Operations Bureau
    Deputy Brian C. Britt
    Age: 45
    Date of Hire: 08/07/2000
    Termination Date: 10/16/2017
    What:
A patrol deputy is terminated for sustained inappropriate conduct while on and off duty.
    When:
The incident occurred between December 31, 2016, and January 10, 2017.
The deputy was terminated on October 16, 2017.
    Where:
The incident occurred at various locations in Pinellas County and Pasco County.
    Why/How:
A patrol deputy is terminated for sustained inappropriate conduct while on and off duty.
According to Administrative Investigation Division investigators, on December 31, 2016, Deputy Brian Britt responded to a dispatched call to a private residence in the City of Oldsmar in an attempt to locate a wanted 18-year-old female for the charge of domestic battery.
Upon Deputy Britt's arrival to the residence, he located the female whom was reported to have only been wearing a towel. Deputy Britt followed the female into the home and allowed her to retrieve her identification and get dressed in the bathroom. While in the bathroom there was a second female "naked" in the shower. The 18-year-old female was taken into custody.
While at a separate location and waiting for the arrival of the jail transport van. Deputy Britt was reported to have removed the 18-year-old female's handcuffs and had an inappropriate flirtatious conversation. Deputy Britt was reported to have inquired about visiting the two females at a local adult nightclub where she worked.
Deputy Britt continued to have inappropriate contact with the 18-year-old female including using his department-issued phone to send flirtatious text messages and set up a later visit with the two females at his private residence. Deputy Britt offered money as an incentive for the visit. While at the home, investigators say Britt's 11-year-old daughter was reported to be at home sleeping in the other room.
As a result of the administrative investigation, Deputy Britt was terminated effective October 16, 2017.
On, October 16, 2017, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a press conference at the Sheriff's Administration Building announcing Britt termination.

is it not a violation of privacy to be announcing to anyone including press that doesnt have access to her criminal history . This is called improper disclosure of private information. And this officer can be held liable. Police cannot disclose any past criminal history to anyone , they may say , this person has a past criminal history but they cannot disclose what that history is . This officer should have known this before he spoke and seems likely that he was trying to justify his actions in firing the deputy . He could have just as easily excluded the details of her criminal history but he chose to include them

Politicians should take heed of the honest sheriff and his quick action to dismiss anyone under his consignment that is caught out for official misconduct/ corruption and underhanded dealings .
The sheriff is a prime example in his official capacity
of how official misconduct must be dealt with , swiftly and in accordance within the law . It would be good if we had an official like him to go around to all law enforcement agencies to educate them on dealing with official corruption / misconduct and how to deal with it , not saying that other law enforcement agencies don't know, but by the way that the sheriff dealt with this was professional by far . Otherwise it is a huge embarassment to whoever is in charge and it would reflect directly back to the leader at the time .

Everything here is good in that the complaint worked its way up the chain. The deputy should have been canned but this level of exposing his wrongdoing is kind of creepy. This is where I am in conflict on transparency. I am all for it but I'm not sure I wanna watch sausage being made in a press conference. Would not be surprised to read that this cop 'took the pipe' in a couple of months like so many cops do.

Yep. If they hadn't gotten caught, this would've been a fun story the boys shared in the locker room or at the station. They only did what they had to, not because they wanted to.

No trouble or complaints since 2008, probably because of the way the complaints are usually handled. Handling your own internal investigations is a BIG conflict of interest.

Sadly, even 20 years ago, no cops would've cared enough to report this. The old boys- club mentality. I've had cops openly hit on me in an open manner while arresting me or during an investigation where i was a witness (just a fender bender), while I'm at a cop shop. Very uncomfortable and awkward and inappropriate. And it was recorded in the room but cops didn't think it was anything. This is one of the positive aspects of the current change that this stuff is no longer tolerated or thought of as normal. I know that people are people and cops are human but while they are cops, they need to act in a manner above civilians. He can do what he wants in his private life but not with people he's engaged with in the course of his job. Hope he gets his stuff together

Anyone else have mixed feelings about people being forbidden from exercising the right to consentually have personal relations with other human beings? There are many reasons why this can cause bias troubles that can cause injustice. Though I find it sad how dehumanizing this mans perspectives are on human to human interaction. Not that she sounds like a keeper. I'd of talked to him as a friend "What are you doing to yourself?" "Look at the kind of person this is you're inviting to your life." It may be harder to do things when we treat everyone as a with empathy and real human being , its also easier to see how we effect other humans outside our immediate job responsibilities and the fuller effect we have on the world. Having citizens and government agents looking at each other as people that only do their job and refuse to look at you as a normal human being can create a rather alienating mentality that makes it rather difficult to reach compassionate mutual understanding that helps bring peace harmony and a safer more civil world. Not that she sounds like shes about to reach that kind of state in life. Is this deputy (nameless dehumanizing label) really so lonely , desperate , or careless to persue that kind of character and bring her into his life? Maybe what he really needs is a good friend or role model.

Ive been in a similar situation. I did engage the officer but he used intimidation to gain access to my home and he actually took off his holster, shirt and bullet proof vest in my bedroom. He was on duty too. I didnt want to have sex with him I was 19 and very sexually inexperienced. He promised he would ride by all the time to make sure I got to work safe. Thinking back I didnt object loud enough but I was scared. His advances didnt end until i moved 5 months later.
