I can answer your questions. It was the salt lake Scot’s. Out of Utah in the US. It was filmed at Camp Williams a military camp in the Salt Lake area. The bass drum was a slingerland which I have today along with the bass heads with all the stars autographs on. William Holden. Claude Akins etc. This film was very popular at the time and depicts a special regiment during WW2.

I was born in 1968 and this was my favorite war movie as a kid growing up. My Dad introduced me to bagpipes music and this is one of the few movies that combines both. This is based upon a real unit in WWII which saw service in Italy. As depicted the Americans were the rowdy misfits and the Canadians were all spit and Polish. I always wondered if they are actually playing in this segment. Thanks for the memories!

We used to have a bass drum like that back in the 80s in the old North Coast Pipe Band in Humboldt County CA.

The band was the Salt Lake Scots. The front and center piper was my father-in-law. My husband grew up in that band and can tell you just about anything about the band of that era that you want to know.

I read somewhere that the pipe band were the Salt Lake Scots. The film is based on an actual commando type unit raised in WW2 in both Canada and the USA. They fought mainly in Italy, I think.
