Football's Cryptocurrency & NFT Crisis
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- From clubs launching fan tokens through companies like Socios, to clubs, competitions, and footballers releasing their own NFT collections, an enormous amount of money has flooded into football from the cryptocurrency industry over the last few years.
As far as the likes of FIFA, UEFA, and the Premier League seem to be concerned, these sponsors, digital assets, and non-fungible tokens are easy money with very few overheads - but increasingly they are being met with opposition from fans.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a closer look at the companies who are now becoming some of the most lucrative advertisers in the sport, the various services they offer, and why they might present an impending crisis to both consumers and to the world of football.
Alfie, this has to be one of the best football videos of all time.
The fact that this is a one person channel and the content is this consistently good over the last few years is mind boggling.
He has ghost writers 🤪
@Murphy's law 78 I currently trade with Mrs EVIE RICHARD. She is the best when it comes to making high profits in the market! All you might need is an expert trader like her assigned by a registered brokerage company.
Crypto and NFT sponsors feel like the new gambling sponsors.
They should be banned. At the very least they should be banned for children.
Or like tobacco money in f1
@@pelethehedgehog9444 yes!
At least some form of regulation around this.
@@simoncaton1226 there won't since it makes some great money for the teams who use them and that's all they are concerned about at the end of the day
@@shawklan27 I think regulations regarding NFT's will come, but not in the near future. Since NFT's are actually harmful to the environment and is linked to scams and such (often targeted towards children) it should not take long before people realize that are causing more harm than good!
Guys let’s appreciate Alfie’s superb videos while we can. It’s only a matter of time till one of the big national/international companies pick him up. His research into his videos is second to none. You come away learning about things not even football related plus the sense of humour man!! Love it.
I don't always agree with the opinions on this channel, but I keep coming back because the quality of the videos is so consistently high. This was an excellent watch- thoroughly researched, comprehensive and clearly explained.
This man need to make his own channel, these videos are basically documentaries at this point. The fact you have people over you and you're making such quality content with all your efforts is kinda crazy. Please create your own channel Alfie 🙏🏼
He has one. It’s called “Alfie Potts Harmer.” Throw him a sub!
He kinda already said that he wanted to make his own UA-cam channel (not directly but when he says to subscribe to the channel with his name and no videos).
Like the Irish guy, he probably has a contract and needs to wait until is over to start his own thing.
He has a youtube channel, it's just empty.
The journalism research and presentation of this video is absolutely unreal..... Brilliant work Alfie
with nfts being relatively worthless now this has aged like wine
It is concerning that a company banned from operating in the UK, is allowed to sponsor a UK football team.
NFTs are the biggest load of BS I've ever seen. The fact that two of their biggest promoters from within football are Michael Owen and John Terry, both of whom seem like absolute knobs, doesn't exactly help.
Can't say how happy I am to see you hit 500k subscribers, Alfie. Amazing content and very well researched info. Keep digging on the awkward stories, one of the few football fans to use their platform the way you do. Fair play to you, very well done and I hope you have continued success.
This is one of the best videos you’ve done
It gives me hope, to see backlash against NFT’s.
NFT:s are great and one of the most transformative technologies if used for something that it actually does better than any pther tool avaliable, like secure authentication and identification online.
My daughter is a digital artist and is vehemently opposed to NFT’s
@@1998Cebola that’s blockchain technology, no NFTs themselves.
NFTs are dead already just stop talking about it
Man I love this channel. 40 minutes well spent. Thank you Alfredo
16 minutes in and the fact that the Prem is basically used by Chinese casinos to circumvent advertising laws is one of my most depressing realisations in a while
Yea, betting shirt sponsors and Crypto shirt sponsors NEED TO GO as we spoke about Alfie.
Football is a family sport, children don’t have to see these stuff
it is good Liverpool stayed with standard chartered for another few years even though many of their fans, supporters want to change that shirt sponsor
Congratulations on 500k 500000 subscribers now 😊
Hopefully you can do a Wimbledon documentary soon :)
Standard Chartered is arguably worse than nfts due to their links to funding terrorism etc
@@pelethehedgehog9444 yea, Liverpool should have looked into changing that, and done more.
Lfc been with Nike shirt supplier for a few years now too.
Kids are pretty much being lured into investing on these services when they get to the leagal age to legally use them and that's a sad sad prospect
@@BALHAM69 They should but they wont unless they are forced into doing so.
@@pelethehedgehog9444 i did some research, the new deal is until 2027 season i heard
i agree they won’t cancel it unless something else comes up and offers more money for a shirt sponsor
Great video on this! I think it is super important to address this. I do see NFTs and digital goods as another avenue for fan connection if we take away the speculation side. But the fact that everything in blockchain and NFT is tied to speculation really ruins it for many fans who just want to have a solid experience with their favorite teams.
Football got cryptoshits, F1 got cryptoshits, everywhere every single day is full of cryptoshits. I am tired.
I personally found it pretty funny and pretty just desserts for obvious greed.
inter milan are the worst sell outs !! those pirelli shirts were amazing !! look at the crap thats on the front now !!
Rarely comment video ideas but would love to see a video on Celtic and how dramatically Ange Postecoglou has turned the club back around to unrivalled dominance in Scotland since the disastrous season where Celtic lost out on the last of ten league titles in a row. Think it would be an interesting video!
NFT's are a true pest in today's society.
Staying VERY far away from it all.
Wise decision.
Good luck with that
Another trend for losers & fantasists.
The whole thing is sad. We try so hard to sustain our fantasy that the sport and its personnel care about ANYTHING other than amassing as much cash as possible as quickly as possible at the expense of the fans. And reality just keeps slapping us in the face, screaming GROW UP. Sometimes, I don't like being grown up.

The next 1-2 years is gonna be exciting for you if you're into crypto in precisely.
Thanks for the recommendation. I feel ecstatic diving in now.
I'm surprised you haven't talked about Watford's deal with bitcoin and dogecoin last season. Not only was it fucking embarrassing to have the dogecoin logo slapped on the arm of the shirt, there are rumours (although mostly unsubstantiated) that these brand deals were paid in bitcoin, or even worse, with dogecoin. Because dogecoin's value has now fallen off a cliff to less than a tenth of its peak value, that could be an explanation as to why, even with the parachute payments, we act like we're flat out broke in the transfer market and selling anyone with value
Dodgycoin
Ha ha. Watford thought they would get rich hodling crypto. Suckers
@@richardfinlayson1524 All crypto is Dodgycoin.
too bad there isn't a Goatsecoin
as the main shirt sponsor
I shorted the crypto of Socios (CHZ) and the thing went up 25% in the midst of a general market sell-off after the Ethereum merge....cryptocurrencies don´t make sense because most of the tokens outside the top 20 are so easy to manipulate by whales that it´s just a trap waiting to happen at every corner...and football clubs jumped straight into them and offered their cryptos to their fans to siphon money from them.
Truly a masterclass of respect for you audience :)
You've truly peaked. At the end you admitted this was just an intro. Your Intro has lasted over 40 minutes and is now the entire video.
As Crawley fan, I'm looking forward to Crypto taking us to the premier (non) league next season.
Top non-league division is still a top division...
I gather WAGMI stands for We're All Gonna Make It. This sounds like a slightly opposite trajectory for them to hodl on
When the MLS decided to do nfts, it was like "how bad can it be"? Now, the socios app and their NFT trading program was dead before the MLS deal began and it just felt like "why, this is just insane." But just need to see what it happens in the next few years.
the MLS definitely deserves what's coming for them

The clubs that go heavy on Crypto sponsors are taking a massive risk as these companies could go bust at any minute. Especially clubs that have them as main sponser
what is the risk exactly? they'll just get a different sponsor next year
Imagine being a rich footballer, and then try to fleece your fans in a pyramid scheme. Peak modernity.
The MLS lauding NFT’s pisses me off. A league the fans literally built. MLS would be the next NASL if an average of 22 thousand people didn’t show up to games. Instead of respecting that, MLS goes for a cash grab and spits in the face of its fans, further smearing its image on the world stage
Have you any plans to look into what FIFA are selling on their website and subsequently people are trying to resell. Selling clips of goals etc. It looks really shady.
The value backing crypto is what some of my friends had trouble understanding, they would say me investing in stocks is the same as crypto and just gambling, ignoring the fact that while still volatile you are investing in a company with tangible assets that have a real world value

There is a strong overlap between supremely optimistic and fairly gullible young men being into football, and crypto.
Perfect bedfellows.
Alfie, I love it that you cover this stuff that the MSM are far too gutless and corrupted to look at.
Take a look at F1 - the overlap is even bigger. Highly technical individualistic sport full of pretty boys, swimming in glitz and glamour where it's all about who has most money. It's a tech bro's wet dream.
Crypto and NFTs will die off soon, and I hope so soon
Crypto dying off right now as we go in to a dark financial crisis when FIAT could become close to meaningless is incredibly concerning.
NFT's are fine (still not something I'd personally use) but not as an investment or get rich quick scheme, but for example they can be used to support an artists work, same as any method of payment. The idea was hijacked and abused, so yes in that form it is dying completely and rightly so.
Something else will take its place
No we're just in a risk off environment. When the markets go risk on again the greed and gamblers will come back and crypto will yet again be center stage
Cryptocurrency will never die, cause theres real usage on society, and resolves lots of problems, but obviously, the world dont need 300 different cryptocurrencies, so basicly 295 eventually will disapear and leave the good ones
@@RoyMatzem Nah its just the greatest casino ever built. Human greed wont let it die
Crypto currency is gambling. NFTs are gambling. If the Premier League is going to ban gambling, that means banning speculative asset gambling as well.
Hey now! Stop making sense.
By definition it would then require to ban banks as well.
Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it
I agree with your msg 💯
Money is also a tool that can help you to achieve your goals. It can provide comfort and stability for your family, make it easier to plan for the future, and allow you to save for important milestones. But to achieve these things, you need to know how to make your money work for you by investing with the right signal📶.
Many think bitcoin investment is only profitable when the market price is going up but from my knowledge and experience I can boldly say to you that investing in bitcoin is profitable both in bulls and in bears all you need is the right information
Same here, It's strange how people talk about all the profits, they've been making through investing in bitcoin, while am here not making any profit at all. Please can someone put me on the right path?
Most time knowing or insight about a particular activity can as well be a pleasing exercise. I can boldly say that bitcoin investment is one of the profitable money exchange services that elevate investors and their financial status.

The only way this video gets any better, is if Margot Robbie was in a bubble bath explaining the whole thing. Not a pop at you Alfie, I'm sure you enjoy one from time to time.
This is a very good video, so much education in business and crypto trading, and all from a football channel. Amazing work Alfie

I definitely view both cryptocurrencies and NFTs as problematic, but cryptocurrencies even more so in the light of the ongoing energy crisis. The amount of energy consumed by data centers these kinds of companies operates is jaw-dropping. I've noticed a few of them that used to be based in my area up and left for greener (read: cheaper) pastures of electricity, leaving nothing of value behind - save for slashing power consumption of the local area by a fair amount. I cannot fathom how this drain on an increasingly overpriced resource can be allowed to continue unregulated.
And there's definitely a climate impact from wasting that much power too.
The power usage of crypto largely gets overplayed. The majority of them are Proof-of-stake rather than Proof-of-work blockchains which means you don’t have people mining and that means power usage is negligible. Eth the second largest crypto and often the base for most NFT's, this month switched for proof-of-stake. Even with Proof-of-work much of the mining happens in areas where they produce excess energy, for example until ch8na cracked down much of the mining happening was doing so in rural areas of China where they produced their own power and more than they needed but where they didn’t have the infrastructure to sell or store this excess so used it to mine thus making these often poor areas more money from power that would be wasted. You also see many oil companies using their wells to power crypto mining operations, when drilling for oil and gas you also bring up other substances, methane especially which are both bad for the environment and for safety so they burn this odd but that again is wasted energy. So they are increasingly using this wasted power to power crypto miners so aren’t then wasting energy but also are being better for the environment which is win win
Can't wait for the Sorare sequel to this video
This reminds me SO MUCH of your video on unusual PL gambling sponsors and that is one of my favourites

I’m a very intelligent and cynical entrepreneur hoping to relieve relatively poor individuals of what wealth they do have by inventing a currency that people, ideally of low intelligence and susceptible to marketing ploys, can “trade” as a form of gambling but one they think might make them rich. But where can I access a huge and growing market of low IQ individuals with a proven history of blind brand loyalty and willing to spend a large % of their earnings on frivolous entertainment? I know - I’ll advertise through Premier League football!
I really appreciate u making a case for why footballers get into the NFT space, but there is still no excuse. I know a lot of them don't get to go to college or have a great education, but like you said it's very obvious people are against it. It makes no sense. You make so much money and instead of make normal investment in stocks or bonds, you choose an investment that people go out of their way to clown on.
Man been waiting so long for this video, one of the best so far
I think NFT mania is going down from its peak
I have never understood the allure of NFTs. I’ve never trusted crypto. The more I learn about crypto the less I like it. The computer banks required to make crypto viable eat up valuable power that could used for heating, AC or something else that is more useful.
