At 14 years old, I,m 92 now , my dad took me deer hunting, my boots were 5 buckle arctics and a felt inner boot. Walking into our stand our feet sweated quite a bit. When you got to the stand ,it took about 5 minutes for your feet to get cold. I wore a heavy Woolrich jacket that my mom sewed a red handkerchief on the back, safety orange started a long time after, but those were magic days and my Dad is long gone but always in my heart,I moved to Florida at age 65 but Pa. and the days of my youth will always hold the highlights of my life.

I'm only 55 but when I was a kid my dad (82) thought that 5 bukle arctic boots where the way to go. Didn't believe in things like laces and thinsilate. Spent most of my time feeding pigs and cutting firewood with cold feet. I doubt my kid even knows what they are.

Good morning from New Hampshire. Mike, you are all about efficiency and time. It is definitely a marathon and a love for the wood heat. You are handling your wood too much. We switched over to bins and saved so much time. The wood is split and stacked right in the bins. We use forks to handle the wood after it is stacked and the bin is placed next to the stove in the basement with a pallet jack. We can move a cord of wood in 10-15 minutes and are set for 3-4 weeks. Currently your process for handling each piece is log splitter -> ground -> shed-> tractor bucket -> outside rack -> inside rack -> stove. If you make a small bump out addition with a door on either side of the stove where the windows are your process would be cut in half if not more. From the log splitter -> stacked in IBC tote -> stove. You could store the IBC tote in the shed for drying and bring it up with the forks and placed in the small room near the stove. You could call it the wood closet. You could even put a door on the inside so you wouldn't see the IBC tote from the inside. It would definitely cut down on all the time you are spending handling the wood so you can use that time for other things.

I agree with you, Mike could build an attractive enclosure placed where the wood rack is at HQ, Doors front and rear and sized to fit a full wood tote/basket inside. Would save a lot of extra wood handling and time.

@@chuckpreston4981 My thought was to locate the enclosure partially under the roof where the wood rack is now unless there is a window right there but there still would be room just behind the cistern without blocking the drive I believe.

The sled/boots/bread bags all bring back great memories. We had Cemetary Hill (it was an area of future addition to cemetary) that about 1/4 way down had a slight bump/ramp that you would catch air on with your sled then at bottom another 200' it ramped up to the road. We would be airborne half the width of road and 2-3 feet high...man we had fun! Oh, and the BB gun story, yes childhood was different back then, we played Army...alot. And jumped everything with our bikes, yes usually other kids laying on ground. Kind of shock we survived our stupidity

I agree, there's nothing like a wood fire for warmth. And yes, it's messy and a lot of work. I'll be 75 this year and don't know how much longer I want to process firewood. I don't mind storing and hauling it. I have a carport converted to a woodshed. I keep my Polaris Ranger in it with the box filled with wood. When the wood cart in the house runs low I back the ranger to the front door and fill the wood cart. My neighbor selsl firewood, He's got a DYNA Firewood processor. Since he retired from the railroad he's picked up his firewood game. He was selling 200 cords/year. It's a whole lot more than that now. A cord of Ponderosa Pine delivered was $220 the last time I bought one a few years ago. I can only imagine it's more now.

Hey Mike, I took a piece of 2"black iron pipe and slotted and slipped it up over the plow cutting edge and then secured it by welding a couple straps to a cutting edge bolt. Prevents gouging sod and helps ride over your stone and seems to plow just as well. Just thought I would share. Dad wouldn't let us kids get the green boots. We had to get the 5 buckle "artics" that went over your regular shoes. They were warmer and I would guess cheaper but I envied the guys with the green slip on boots.

Living and working in the WNY , Buffalo area I have seen some amazing snowstorms !!! The wind comes up Lake Erie , picks up a lot of moisture and the fist land it hits is the southern tier and Buffalo !!! My office was in south Buffalo and you could see the Lake Effect storm clouds coming off the lake . The snow comes in Snow Bands maybe only 10 or so miles wide , but in that band you get SNOW , big time !!! One storm a few years back the Buffalo area got 7 FEET of snow in one storm !!! They had D8 cats opening up some of the roads , amazing stuff . I live north of Buffalo by about 15 miles , just south of Lake Ontario and we generally get very few storms and a LOT less snow . You prepare for the winter expecting a bad winter and hoping for a mild winter.

Grew up in the Deep South though, so only saw snow twice in my life before graduating high school and heading off to all of the wonderful places Uncle Sam saw fit to allow me to visit and live, so sledding was not a childhood event. Get plenty of it now, including a quite enjoyable episode yesterday with the young 'un that rapidly went from mild fun to Holy Cow to exhilarating to exhausted.

Just a thought. Instead of putting the wood into your tractor bucket. And moving it to the patio and re stacking it. I know you have those firewood shelters. Instead of stacking in those you could always stack the firewood into ibc totes and still store them in the shelters and when it’s time to bring more wood up to HQ just bring the whole tote and leave that on the patio. That way all you have to to is go outside and grab from the totes and when the totes is empty exchange it for another one. I know you will store a little less but when it’s time to move the wood in the cold you are less cold because you’re not outside for as long and let the equipment do the work. Either way keep up the great work. I move all my wood with totes on my channel. And we sell a ton of wood. Matt from Wisconsin. Take care.

Growing up in the middle of NC, snow days were a rare and beautiful thing (until you had to pay them back at the end of the year). 😂 we had no snow clothes so we wore the plastic newspaper protector on our feet. My Daddy built a giant sled which he dragged behind the tractor and all the kids came out and jumped on! Once we had so many kids, the chain broke and off my Daddy drove, whistling away and completely oblivious to the pile of kids he was leaving behind. 😂😂😂 my Mama made snow cream that tasted like heaven ❤ great snow memories ❤

The dumbest thing I’ve ever done was to take a shot at a shag poke crane , one of those long legged wading birds that used to be around our neck of the woods. I lined up the sights and let one fly , the bird flew off like nothing happened. Later that day I found it laying on the ground some distance away. I’ve regretted it to this day.

I was fly down the hill at Tommy's house, with my green rubber boots that we always wore & feet got cold, and hit a rock under the snow that pushed me into a tree that I hit head on, slide forward & wrapped myself around that tree! Had to crawl home & Dad took me to the Dr. Not a hospital but the Dr's office at night. You know, that's when they did house calls too.
Wearing those boots, we stop & make a fire from pine branches that we broke off the trees, to get our feet warm! Thanks for those memory reminders. Now you know how old this Old Jarhead in WNC is.

At night , looking at the City in the snow ,with the twinkling lights below was a beautiful sight! And back then , the steel mills were in full operation! I always remembered the slag , pouring down the hills by the Monongahela River , like lava ...I love Pittsburgh ♥️

Good morning Mike, sorry to hear about your tooth pick issue. Good thing that Dr Melissa Morgan was available to come to the rescue. Nice to see Eva with you at the end of this video. You all take care during the cold front that your part of the country is experiencing. Here in Fresno we have mild weather in the 50°s during the day, however we are expecting some very windy conditions to come soon accordingly to the weather person here. Have a good day!

Mike, if you have ceiling fans make sure you have on and set to blow up or in reverse. I am sure you know this but it really helps moving warm air and eliminating cold spots. We use them always when running our woodstove.

In our A frame - in mountains in California, We burned for 17 years with the same company stove as you have back of you. I found red burns hot due to the large cells of oxygen is there when burning. I found White Oak burns a bit cooler - smaller cells and more wood per stick of wood. We expect 1" tonight or tomorrow 200 miles from Houston. We had some for fun palm trees. The trees normally live. Talk to the oil man. Has trucks and you can buy bulk oil. See if you can get a used knee-high oil can with handles. Make great trash cans in the shops and fantastic ash cans on the porch it won't burn, and you are not walking out in the rain or snow until after the worst. Enjoy the snow while you got it.

I grew up in the 90s. We make our kids watch the scroll on the bottom of the local news station just like we had to. Same thing though, you miss it and you're waiting another 10 minutes. Kids need to learn patients anyway and the anticipation is so fun for them.

Couple more weeks of packing in the small evening snowfalls. The driveways will be easy to plow. Neighborhood kids would gather under a corner street light. Waiting to catch car bumpers. Kids are missing out on so much fun. Hen a car would slow or stop at corner We would squat down and grab bumper and slid on your feet for 2 or 3 blocks. And let go. Wait there to catch a slide back up. No bumpers to hold onto with these new cars.

I had those boots, an olive drab parka, and a flexible flyer. My friends would go down the creek with a trash can and fill it up and spill it on the sidewalk making a ice track. I hit a telephone pole and got 26 stitches over my eye. That was in the mid 70's.

I started with Lotus 123 myself. Then Microsoft expanded. Take care. I noticed a lot of changes between 7 and 10. Wow Eva. We normally averaged 100" of rain. Not high enough for snow but now and then we would. The massive Redwoods loved the fog and the snow. Drips to roots is the trick.

Sorry for the late suggestion to name your room but here it is, “The Den”Back at the Den" means returning to a familiar, comfortable, and usually secluded space, like a room in your home that is used for relaxing, watching TV, or socializing with close friends; essentially, "going back to your home base.

Great memories for me as well. I started out with “goulashes” or rubber over shoes with buckles and bread wrappers. Then I had some tall green boots we called Northerners. Eagle777 stated same thing. Not much insulation but waterproof. Snow days meant you shoveled neighbors “walks” and “drives” for a couple bucks. We did the elderly neighbors for free. Then we could sled. No BB gun battles just snow forts and snowball fights. I’m in my 60’s but I still do my elderly neighbors drive and walk for free. Credit to my parents for teaching me to be a good neighbor. I use a machine to move snow now tho.
