Suprised the Speer bullets worked. I bought a few boxes 2 yrs ago, very poor accuracy in my rifle. Measured .3215 dia. Hornady 150 gr meassure .3225 and shoot well in my 98k 1943 model. That is 11/2 versus 5" at 100 yds.
Good test. These would be fine for broadside lung shots, doubt you’d recover either bullet. For shoulder shots and bones I’d go to Speer Grand Slam or a bonded bullet
Your load is accurate enough for normal deer hunting inside 150 yards. Remember water is actually 'harder' that flesh upon impact so both bullets should hold together better & even pass through at your test distance on deer. That is fast for a 150 grain cup & core bullet too. Wet news paper or ballistic gel I would guess give better expansion results. Good testing!
I use the 195 grain hornady SP ,with 48 grains norma 203-B . At 100 meters i get about 30-35 mm spread and when shoot wildboar, moose it preform very well .
I took a huge male Gemsbuck of 550lbs in SA with my German K98, 1942 vintage, with Hansen Cartridge Company ammo loaded in Yugoslavia to whatever the max is I assume, cause those things shot wayyyy higher than the Remingtons I used prior. For those of you who don’t know, US ammo is loaded down, so is that Serbian brand I can’t recall, not S&B, the other one with the blue boxes. Anyway, 170 gr soft point, who’s bullet I don’t know, not bonded just a regular cup and core pewjectile. Found it in one piece on the opposite side. Confident is key I guess! Hahaha Happy reloading fellow reloaders, next time I go back will have some 200 gr hot-cor loads to play with 👺

Years ago I picked up a German 98 with the .323 inch bore. It was a guild or cigarette rifle so named because German gunsmith’s would trade their gunsmithing shills for cigarettes. Anyway the gun had a barrel band for a front sling swivel,a banded front sight with a brass bead and a vee notch express rear sight with 2additional folding rear sights and was drilled and tapped for scope use. Also had a double set trigger. And 23 inch barrel. I wanted more performance than was offered by the currant performance of slightly less than 30-30 ballistics so I bought a couple of boxes or Prvi 198 grain soft points and wit a old leupold 4 power scope it would put 3 shots into 1.5 inch groups . I tried it on 2 deer,One about 200 pound buck slightly quartering toward me at about 175 yards away and at the shot he ran the entire 175 yards back toward me and dropped about 50 yards past me. Needless to say I did not recover the bullet as it hit almost center of the chest and exited the deers side right in front of the quarter. Did a little damage but not much. Next day same bean field and almost the same yardage and same shot placement was a small doe maybe a hundred pounds and she ran about half the distance to where I was sitting,again very little damage . Next year I took the Prvi cases and loaded them with the Hodgdon powder that you are using and experimented with a couple of different loads but settled on best accuracy wit least recoil of 48 grains with a Sierra game king that according to load data was doing about 2700 fps(hot 300 savage ballistics) With a tad less than a 1.25 inch groupings at 100 yard shot from the seat of my pickup. One 60 pound for at 15 yards through both shoulders instantly dropped,one approx 125 pound buck dropped instantly at about 75 yards . Yea I really liked that rifle and yea I sold it any yea I wish I had it back !

There is no problem with jacket and core separation, because, it is all one piece of copper, with a polymer-plastic wedge tip. Not cheap, not lead, and tends to work very well.*
Yes, I have tested some Barnes bullets and they are no doubt the best. If I was hunting, that would be my first choice. I appreciate your comment. Thanks 👍
150 grains @ about 2700 FPS is what the military ammo was doing early 20th century. Yes, you can get 2900 FPS at lower pressures with slower burning powder. Water is hard on bullets. Hornady tends to indicate most Interlock bullets are at their best at speeds around 2700-2800 FPS. Back off on the gas and your accuracy may get better and the bullets may behave a little better on impact too. Shoot the ballistic gel if you are really serious about terminal testing. Both of those bullets are decent deer hunting bullets. They should work just fine and do it at reduced velocity too.
Try a scope next time I'm sure you got a hole cutter there but not with open sites you more than likely could increase to max and get sub moa with that weapon it's sweet I got one don't even look like it's ever been shot the rifling was very pronounced it was crazy I shoot 170 gr. Hornady sst. 55gr.h-4350less than half in.moa at 100 yards don't no fps.no crony but most for sure try a scope I don't no how you can stand not knowing for your self it would drive me crazy till I found out just saying.
I don't know if you were clamping the rifle in the tripod or just resting it on it. It's usually a really bad idea to restrict a wood stock in a clamp or lead-sled. When you do that, the action screws and tang become splitting wedges. 2MOA is about the best you can ask for out of any open iron sights. The smallest target that the average person can consistently aim at with the naked eye and irons is about 2 to 3 MOA.
Best I get is 2 or 3 moa at 100 yards and that's with a Yugo M48a which shoots better than my K98K....If I put on a pistol scope on a non-bubba scope mount I can half that..... be well.
I would suggest WORKING UP THE LOAD with each projectile... .2 or.3 grains at a time. Try another powder...Try some Boat Tails. What recipe and load works in mine, may not work in yours. I have found in my experiences that I don't have to get/have the Fastest FPS as the manuals for decent/tighter groups. As we all knpow, EVERY RIFLE SHOOTS DIFFERENT! Check your chamber with an erosion gauge. With that info, try setting em closer to the lands? How are the lands and groves? IS the barrel shot out?? How about your muzzle? Is the crown dinged up? These are all things that will effect that grouping... Stretch her legs to at least 100yrds for the test... farther if possible. Just suggestions. I was able to work up a load on a '03-A3 (2 LAND AND GROVE) to just over 1MOA @100yds. Found the right one working 3 different powders , primers and projos. But, like you stated... YOUR MILAGE MAY VARY! Bottom line, if your happy and content... and its putting meat in the freezer... THATS ALL THAT MATTERS! Stay safe and keep having FUN!!! 🤘
Yes. You are correct and all great advice. I was working with 4064 and was really satisfied until I ran out. I wanted to try H4895 and really push velocities. Loading for accuracy is definitely a process that takes time and patience. I really appreciate the comment. Thanks again 👍.
Yea don't worries they have these pressures so bound down because of old junkie guns that you just almost have to wildcat it to get anywhere with it I believe you could dam near double these load they show and be safe if your gun is in good shape mine has the most pronounced rifling I have ever seen period and bore is perfect and I'll be damned if after all the work I put in this there going to make a shitty 30-30 out of it they should have to books one for junk and one for good ones id say rite at 30-06 specs not quiet but close 170gr.sst at rite at 3000 grand would work and does work I no.
Try some 4064 170gr. sst. at lower end 3006 levels and then you mite have something guns in good shape only if in doubt have it checked out but dont be afraid to try or you will never no good shape firearms only have them checked by a pro.gunsmith.
I think the Speer did better because of the penetration . Try the 170 gr.

the 150 Sierra ,Speer and Hornady are all excellent deer /antelope bullets as they dump their energy very quickly

Speer and Hornady both shot well for me. The 170 grain Speer were one of the top performers that I tested. Thanks for the comment.
