In this video, I unbox a Gretsch Catalina Club 20" 4-piece drum set, DW 3000 Hardware, and the Zildjian K-Custom Worship Cymbals.
Then my friend Jonny Serrano stops by the office to help me tune the heads. We broke a lug on the high tom but fortunately, we were able to get it fixed at our local music shop!
Hey bro! Love what you're doing here! Cool to see the Zildjian Worship Pack too. Fun back-story, Zildjian reached out to us for the worship and gospel packs to help them find the right photos for the box. Daniel is a great drummer for All Sons and Daughters and if you check his insta feed around a year ago, you should see some videos of him playing with the cymbals from the worship pack. Keep up the great work!
#HeartBeforeBeat!
Jon Manna
Love it, Jon! Thanks for watching!
I have almost identical tastes to all your recommendations. I built a kit for my church. I stripped the hardware off or Yamaha stage-Custom and Keller, maple shells maple shells. I made the exact sizes and configurations that you recommend.
That kit sounds killer, I love gretsch and zildjian
I'm a huge fan of the content on this channel! Thanks for al the great vids. Keep it up!
+Watson Maack thank you for subbing and watching. Really appreciate it!
I got my in ears from Johnny at WFX this year. He is a great guy!
+Kody Kirkwood small world! Jonny is freaking awesome.
I love that store, I get all my sticks from there!
I play in two church praise bands. For one church: I use a small 4-piece 'bop'/'jazz' sized drum set: a Ddrum 'SE Flyer' set with a 5 x 14" wood-shell snare drum, an 8 x 12" tom, 14 x 14" floor tom, and 14 x 18" bass drum. Cymbals for that kit is a 14" Zildjian 'A' thin crash, 18" Zildjian 'A' medium ride, 16" Zildjian 'A' thin crash, 14" Zildjian A New Beat hi-hats, and a 10" Sabian AA china splash cymbal. The hi-hat has 'jingles' mounted on the pull rod. That kit fits church praise band setting perfectly. One of the key aspects of that kit for me is the bass drum has sufficient 'bottom end' without being overpowering and 'boomy': the church sanctuary acts as a echo chamber and a big booming bass drum is simply too much for that setting. For the other church I'm currently using an old (1962 vintage) Ludwig Club Date set with a 5 x 14" wood snare, 9 x 13" tom, 15" floor tom, and 16 x 22" bass drum. That kit has great warm sound but it can be a bit much in that church and I really have to lay back, so it will soon be replaced by a Sonor 'Bop' kit (similar sizes to the Ddrum 'SE Flyer' kit) that I just picked up. Keys for me are wood-shell snare drums, and smaller size bass drums. I want the snare to be warmer and not too bright, and the bass to have enough presence but not too much 'boomy' and ring. Oh and the snare drum should have good response to brushes. Smaller cymbals and thin-weight crash cymbals that respond well to light playing. That's what works for me in church worship/praise band applications.
How much coffee did u have before this?
Alot
Wait till you get to visit Sweetwater! Its amazing
+Robert Costa someday I'll make the pilgrimage!
Make it out for their Worship Connect conference if you can. Its a pretty great conference for the money. Amazing facility! I did a Vlog for gear fest on my channel. Its like a mini NAMM. Pretty great!
Hey side note I'm a fellow worship leader doing youtube on the side for fun. Did the new UA-cam Partner Program (YPP) requirements mess you up? I know you are over the thousand subs but they are also hitting us with the 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months... Really stinks and hurts my channel right as it felt like I was gaining ground:-(....
Just subbed to your channel! I was also just looking into the youtube partner program change. So I actually hadn't even signed up for the partner program till about a month ago and they are taking forever to approve me. I don't really need it for adsense. More for being able to link people back to my website, but yeah that is frustrating how they keep changing things on us!
Sorry I'm just responding been a busy week at the church. Thank you for the sub! I have been watching your videos for a while now and enjoy your content.
I joined the youtube parter program about a year ago and I thought it might be nice to cover a cell phone bill or something one month but they are making it harder for people who don't do it full time.
If you are ever interested in a collab let me know!
@@Churchfront Look at God, 2 years later...
So glad I found this channel. Love to play with your church. I'm a worship drummer too.
Thank you!
If you want dark smooth cymbals get kerope zildjian cymbals. I use just 2 of them. They are very dark and quite cymbals great for church.
I just got some in ears from alclair a week ago 😊 there great.
+Sam Balarezo nice! I want to get a pair of alclair ears when I grow up.
I didn’t know that Zildjian makes a warship pack. I like A-Custom cymbals for church, because they have a slow attack and they mellow tone.
Thanks Harry Kane
I can’t unsee it now... thanks😫😭
I like that you included breaking the lug because that actually happens sometimes. Real struggles!
Very real struggles. lol
Love this video! It is hard to find the right gear for the worship environment. I had that issue with my cymbals. So started making my own.
Dude you need to go to Sweetwater's gearfest! It's an unforgettable experience! I totally love Sweetwater!
Do you guys donate some of your drum parts to your Church? E.g. drum heads, moongels, and even some cymbals
Wow! In all my 40+ years of playing drums I have NEVER seen a tuning lug or tension rod completely strip out like that. Especially not on a brand new fresh-out-of-the-box kit!
I have had tension rods/lugs get cross threaded, which ruins them so they cannot tune the drum anymore and just sit there kind of spinning in place.
So, just out of curiousity, what was wrong with it? What was the fix?
Yeah it was weird. It just got stripped when we put it in the first time. We were able to replace the threaded part inside the lug. Pretty easy fix fortunately!
I know exactly why this happened… you didn’t leave it for an experienced player to do the setting up.😅
@@Churchfront Yeah. It's basically just a specialized nut. No reason to buy a whole new lug when the manufacturer will just sell you the nut for pennies.
Dude this video is so great
Hi, Jake. I am sure you will be a drummer, too and enjoying the fun of it. Buy the way, will you make a video also on electronic drum worhip? They are a lot easier to set, though. And with modern sound these days eDrum is simpler to change sounds, don't you think? Thanks for your video helping new church drummers to learn just linking to your videos, hahaha.
Not quite my tempo
Ok gangs, whiplash
Thanks so much for this video and information - very well presented! I'm building almost the exact same kit and am now in the process of replacing the stock heads. I've already ordered the vintage emperors for the toms...but didn't know if they were just for the batter side or if you replaced the reso side with the same or something different or kept the stock reso heads - i've just ordered for the batter side so far. Also curious if you added any other cymbals in addition to the worship pack and what they were?
You only need new heads for the batter side. Haven’t got any more cymbals besides what you see here!
thanks!
How in the world do you tune do you tune a drum so high you break a tension lug? I have been playing drums since middle school and have owned everything from cheap starter level drums to Pearl's and a now Tama and have never done that. And I crank my snare drums seriously high.
It broke because the threads were cross threaded. Not because we were trying to make them super tight. It got seized up when I was was trying to take the lug out.
I'm a drummer for about 8 years but still don't have my own drum set because of some reason. I pray that someday I'll be having one.
Hey man the toolkit is not working, every time i try submitting my details for the toolkit it gives me an error page
Those bass drum claws are all bagged up separately as so they don't get all scratched up during shipment if they were all in one bag.
I don't know about you but I'd hate having a brand new kit and my claws are all ugly, jacked, and used up looking...lol
Thank you for sharing. I have many questions about how God & music are intertwined for him & something I wish I'd done sooner was ask more questions. Did he choose his instrument or was it given to him? Would he say playing is a kind of prayer? What about that cymbal that looks like swiss cheese, what does it do differently than an ordinary cymbal? ❤🌊 #catchup
that's not a beginner drum set at all, that's intermediate to pro
Maxwell Gretsch Catalina, Zildjian Ks, all new Remo Heads, DW Hardware, this set is absolutely on the pro edge...
Beginner would have been some Mapex Tornado and a Sabian XS20 set... And that can still sound decent.
You're right
@@Medievalfan94 Those shells are only like $700. Its very much an intermediate kit.
Definitely not pro... But on the low end of intermediate.
I have a question. What’s the size of the drum kick?
the Pearl Export series drums cost about the same price but include hardware so you save some money there, and they sound great.
Ben Blount? I think I know him. Did he recently quit working at Riverfield Country Day School? EDIT: Nevermind, I just checked his website, and found pictures of him. He worked at Riverfield Country Day School during the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year as Paul Knight's assistant (The leader of our rock band program). He then quit because he said he was starting his own company, but none of us knew what. We all came to like him, and he came to like us all as well, and he said he felt bad for leaving us so suddenly. He is a super nice guy, and I'm glad I stumbled upon this video.
your worship team budget is better than mine. we could never afford K series Zildjian cymbals...lol
my ULTIMATE worship setup, 24 by 12'' kick, 14 by 8'' snare 12'' by 10'' rack and 14 by 14'' floor tom, 19'' and 21'' heartbeat Studio and Epic crashes and 23'' custom dry ride, WITH 17'' Studio Hi Hats! ALL Evans Black Onyx and EMAD for kick drum!!
love it!
Can I use a pear midtown series?
i do have pearl midtown kit..but converted it to electeic. they sou ds great. am planning to use it in our church..
So can you explain the reasoning behind the tape on the heads
Moon gels I mean and you did you get your candy from Sweetwater lol
+Eric Hernandez it helps reduce unwanted overtones. But we ended up using moon gels which I think are much more effective.
Yes! I got my candy. I don't know why i forgot to include it in the video haha.
And yeah, the moon gels help reduce the unwanted ringing and overtones. Really helps clean up the sound.
I would add a few things to this drum kit. First I would add lug lock. So the drums don’t de tune as fast. Second I would add a snare weight to the snare. Instead of using moon gel. I think moon gel sucks.
I would replace the sizes of cymbals to. But that’s me haha
so I play this set every weekend and highly disliked the fast crash so i went ahead and replaced it with a 20" studio crash for heartbeat cymbals and have the 24" epic ride on order.
this is why we use an electric set
Quiero esos platillos para mi iglesia! :(
I wish i had those cymbals i use fernando factory cymbals
That 12inch Tom is mounted wrongly and upside down. Badge should be visible and that gum part of the Tom suspension should point to that sticker on the shell.
Good job BTW :)
4:50 how I was when I set up my first drum kit 😂😂
I feel like if you need to watch this video your church is in trouble
I want a drum set
hello english is not my language, could someone tell me what worship means ?
he's just talking about drums for church music
i haven't started the video yet but i clicked because i thought it's a joke where the kit is slowly being taken apart untill there are no drums
dont disappoint me
😂
Hi Jake... I've been drumming for over 40 years, and right now I'm serving as the only drummer at my church. So I thought I'd chime in with another recommendation. If you're looking for a great sounding, well built kit that's easy to transport and set up, then look no further than the Traps Drums a400. It's a shelless acoustic kit that all mounted to a chrome rack. I've had one for about 4 years now and I LOVE it! It's especially great if you're a mobile church and you have to set up and tear down each week. I literally just carry the rack up onto the stage and put it down, swing the drums into position, mount the cymbals on the boom stands (also built into the rack), sit down on my throne and start playing. These things are literally up and ready to go in less than 5 minutes, and I'm usually the first guy set up and torn down at a service. Best yet, they sound FANTASTIC (there are videos all over UA-cam so you can see how they sound), and since there are no shells, they play a bit quieter than standard drum kits (see: You don't overpower your band). They're about $699, and you get a snare, kick drum, 2 rack toms, one floor tom, hi hat stand, kick drum pedal and 2 cymbal boom stands all in one. All you need to add is a throne and cymbals. Check 'em out! ヅ

you said to get the optimum sound out of drums is to tune the heads to "maximum resonance" after 40 years you haven't learned shit.
Yes... That's what I said.
I use a graps kit regularly for rehearsals and I have to say I’d NEVER want to use one for performance.
That's literally the first time I've seen ANYBODY do that to a lug 10:56
Christ isn't even amused
At 4:08 wow
Can you donate that in our church? :)
What exactly is 'Worship Drumming' ? ....and who/what do you worship ?
The God of drums?
Is there much of a difference between Religious drumming and Atheist drumming ? Is it the double bass ? Or is Religious drumming more like Sponsored drumming ? ..... having someone else pay for your hardware rather than buying it yourself ?
JoeyJoJoJr.Shabadoo It's a genre of music. It has nothing to do with double bass or not (I prefer double bass) nor who's paying for the kit.
Worship drumming is a type of drumming that is not particularly showy, but not boring. The main point behind worship drumming is worshiping the Being who created us, and who sacrificed himself in human form for us to have the option to live eternally. Worship is the Praising of the Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ. Worship drumming is different, because you aren't playing for yourself.
Brandon Cruse Drums couldn’t have said it better🔥💯
high tom has the suspension mounted wronglu, You should see the badge and not hide it behind the suspension
Great job I play for jesus word church mass choir
Could one use such a drum set to worship Beelzebub, ruler of demons? And if not, why not?
(know it's sarcasm - still taking stuff serious) it's a tool, so yeah you could - which doesn't mean you should
modellking Jesus, Satan... what's the difference? Neither exist.
alan duncan true
if you believe neither exist then i suggest that you look all around and re think what your saying proof of both existing are all around..choose you this day whom you will serve.
Mars5753644 I believe in the laws of science, but thank you.
Since u don’t play drums would u like to send me those cymbals 😉😉
Dan looks like Anthony Green
what church
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mission Lakewood in Lakewood, CO
That was ALOT of moongels 😂
😂
Drink everytime you hear worship!
Why hit the bearing edge with the hoop? Oh ye, he’s not a drummer and hasn’t a clue what he’s doing with them right there
😍😍😍 donate a drum set to our church. Please 🔥
For not being a drummer, it kinda sounded like you knew what you were talking about haha
Haha. Fake it till you make it.
Too many moon gels just tune it tighter and use less
worship uses low tunning.
BTW - The best way to get the optimum sound out of drums is to just tune the drum heads to their maximum resonance. They'll never sound better! ヅ
lol no way what the fuck are you talking about?
Try it and find out, E Carlos. You may not agree with me, but that's my honest opinion.
PS - Notice how I responded politely without personally attacking you and dropping F Bombs? Be blessed, brother. #SpreadLove
To much resonance is not very appealing in the new contemporary worship, I prefer and many prefer warm, deep, wash sound so it doesn't cut tru the music but merges with the all around sound, Now it really depends of the kind off music your church resonates with.
@@ecarlos2527 r/woooosh
Don’t want To sound a dick, but why The “workship” tag? Does workship Music has a sound That You Need a specific Drumset??? You Need a good drumkit That sound acordingly with The Music You play. If Your church play a more “hillsong”, or”bethel” You Need a more rock kit with Huge sizes and Huge cymbals, if You play in a gospel
Cenário You Need more a r&b kind if kit with shawlow sizes. Don’t get the worship drum kit thing. In most church cenários you need a decent drum kit and the most important thing, playing for the song and for the ambience of the audience. That’s the most important thing, but that’s the truth related to all music styles. Playing the style!!!!
this was like Christmas
Haha totally
His snare drum sound like he's live on tv
The video shows a really expensive way to create your church drum set.
Here's a more budget-friendly way:
Shell Options:
1.) Ddrum Flyer Bop Kit
amzn.to/2TUFa5O
3.) Ddrum Reflex Kit
amzn.to/2X9oCsQ
2.) Gretsch Catalina Club Classic (Crimson Red)
amzn.to/2SXsOwE
Cymbals:
Choose DREAM cymbals! They won't break your bank account like Zildjian, Meinl, & Sabian cymbals. The best ones for worship are the Bliss series. Try this pack of 14" hi hats, an 18" crash & a 22" ride with a Gator backpack case: amzn.to/2EhESkp
Hardware:
1.) Pearl HWP-830 Hardware Package
amzn.to/2DQkSDN
2.) Gibraltar 6608 Heavy Drum Throne
amzn.to/2V4kQ1Y
No choose Zultan cymbals
It’s cheaper than Dream
I’ve heard good things about Zultan. Haven’t had the chance to play them yet.
I recommend the Zultan Dark matter. And dream has dark matter too.
It's not a drum set without a china cymbal.
you counted too fast at the start
sounds and looks like a regular drum set to me.
Ok what isn't a beginner drum set
He went from selling blue meth to playing drums at church.
Worship packs are a huge waste of money tbh, you can get 24” ride, 22” crash and 14” hats
Agreed. Now we use a 22 Heartbeat epic ride and a 20 studio crash.
Harry Kane...?
I'm his better looking older brother.
what exactly is a worship band? 🤨
btw, imho you killed that floortom with all that moongel.... let it resonate
DO NOT BUY ZILDJIAN FOR WORSHIP MUSIC...
There are darker cymbals out there that sound exponentially higher quality than the "worship" pack. Go with HEARTBEAT CYMBALS (the Custom or Classic series) or go with PAISTE (Masters) or ISTANBUL (most istanbuls are dark; any line of Istanbul would work). Also, when buying cymbals for worship music, bigger is going to be better. Do not go below 18" for crashes or ride cymbals. 15-17 hats are delicious. Never buy the zildjian "worship" cymbal pack.
Brandon Cruse Drums dude k light series are dark and washy as hell.
ok i agree with everything except i really like the 14" dark hats. I just got new cymbals for that set and went straight to heartbeat and now using 20" studio crash and a 22" Epic ride and looking at getting the 18" sick hats from Sabian.
Dreams Bliss and Dark Matter series sound so much better than Zildjian too. They’re also really affordable!
Any one else think the intro was synergies
At many points in the first half of this video you repeatedly told us you know nothing about drums.
If you had taken all the drums out of the boxes and started to assemble them yourself with my drum kit I would’ve been extremely unhappy.
10:54 I told you so
So much cringe in this video. Badges face out! What in the world is going on with that high tom? Busting a lug on a new kit? 3000 series is ok for cymbal stands but your ass and tailbone is going to go numb and sore after 15 minutes of playing on that throne get a rocNsoc and the kick pedal and hihat stand are kinda clunky. You want the 5000 for the kick pedal an hihat stand at least, but preferably 9000. But hey, these are church drums and church drums get abused so I get it. Pass around the donation tray a few extra times you'll want to upgrade these pieces I mentioned eventually. Also I would've went with the PDP Maple Concept by DW it's about the same price and far superior to those asian mahogany (laun) garbage wood shells. Though the Gretsch looks more classic and sounds decent in the video. Least your guy knows how to tune. Rock on!
Build? Pfff them fancy church donations pay for it.
learned not to buy a Gretch drum kit because they are cheaply made.
😂
Let it be known that this procedure ONLY works on a worship drum set.... It WILL NOT work on secular drum sets.
Mark Strickland not true
After the secular drumset says the salvation prayer, it will start working.
You probably should have consulted your drummer friend BEFORE buying and setting up your drums.
Just like any other kit. This one will play shit music for myth lessons.
