Attaway Audio my toms reference is a super old album called Revival Down Under with Rodney Howard Brown. There are a lot of references that are great for worship snare sounds. The main thing I’m listening for it “fat crack.” I want it to sound big and cut through. For kick I’m going for something similar. I want it to sound huge, but have clarity and definition.
This was super helpful and well explained! I also appreciated that you addressed common problems. Sometimes tuning videos are quick and the drummers do something and say 'thats perfect'. This definitely isn't my experience ahhaah
You did a great job in this video. That’s how I tune. I made a system for myself that so far seems bullet proof. Finger tight and quarter turn all around in star pattern and then half turn in star pattern and then a full turn in star pattern. I listen to make sure it doesn’t sound like a flappy paper and if it does a 1/8 turn in star pattern. Once is good if it’s too low I’ll do a full turn clockwise. Then put on the top of the head the same way and finger tighte it and then do 1/2 turn in star pattern and then a full turn all around. I’ll listen to it and if it sound like paper I’ll do an 1/8 of a turn clockwise and then if it’s good but sounds like it’s high I’ll flip upside down and take an 1/8th counter clockwise on the bottom off. By then it’s perfect. I’ll beat it up with my sticks until I shake it out of place and usually it deepens on its own. After that I hardly have to touch it.
Nice Video! But isn't it better to have the same pitch on both sides? Because your high Tom starts with a high pitch an at the and of the sound it goes Lower
When I first started drumming I would use a DrumDial and always wanted to learn tune by ear, I suppose it would mean starting to understand your instrument and how pitches/tuning works and different styles, plus....What kind of drummer WOULDN'T want to know how to tune their drums and having that skill?!...Anyways, I say my advice is using DrumDial/Tunebot, in my experience I used the DrumDial to get me the tuning I liked my drums to be at recognizing what it sounds like getting there and the feel, and detuning and trying to get there by feel/ear. I highly suggest people beginning at drums to eventually try tuning by ear. It's an awesome skill and nothing feels better then people telling you your kit sounds killer and it being all because of your ability to tune!
We’ve been running triggers for a couple of years now and I love them, however I keep getting request from our drummers to mic and trigger. I’m not sure I understand the benefit nor the methodology in running both.
Maybe there’s some detail and nuance that the drummers want picked up by a mic that’s not translating to the triggers. Ask them for references of what they’re wanting to hear and go from there
Well, first of all it´s good to have a choice! If your drummers like their miced drumset better (a lot do it) and you like the Triggersounds, you could have both. You could also use the triggers as a sidechain input for your drum gates. Or you mix a clicky kick sound sample under muffeld real kickdrum... I use a trigger on a kick to sidechain a gate on a channel with a 50-60Hz sine wave. Or a trigger on a snare to a channel with gated pink noise. Add in a little gated verb and you get an 80ish "gunshot" snare...
I dont think I heard "over-tones" mentioned once... some unusual terminology though. Tom and snare tone were in sync hence the vibration on the snare when the tom was hit. Can't say I got anything out of this sorry. For such nice drums, they could sound so much better
Also I think he did a good job with used heads and just an ear. No electronic input. Actually they sound jazzy! But that snare must have a wide power band! Wow Tune bot for that snare is a must! 👍
Joe Johnson it depends a little on context. For faster songs I tend to like it a little tighter and short, without choking the drum, and not as tight for slower songs- to increase sustain. Most of the problems I hear with snares is that the wires are too tight. My starting point is just tighter than “rattling” for most worship songs (72bpm ballads). I want the snare response to be part of the original drum sound without choking the drum.
Why was the iconic drum sound owner redacted??? I'm trying to do so much research on drums and how to make them better and the would've been so helpful
Am I missing something? I watched this video only because the video is called tuning drums FOR WORSHIP music. I'm producing worship music and I'm trying to get the big drum sound you hear on recorded worship music. However, your video seems more like a video for tuning drums IN GENERAL. Your title is a bit misleading... or... did I miss something???
The big drum sound you hear from recorded worship music includes samples 99.9% of the time. This is aimed at the current worship sounds, as opposed to metal or jazz... so maybe it's not so misleading.
You've been tuning drums for decades? Not a one of those drums are tuned and then you are talking about tunebots and drum dials? Not to be disrespectful but I think you should make a video about something else besides tuning drums cause these sound absolutely horrible. They sound like they are just not tuned.
It's a balancing act - if they're perfectly in tune, they ring for dayzzz. Like I mentioned in your comment on another video, I'd be happy to link to your video that you post about drum tuning. Always happy to learn new techniques and keep growing.
that's where your preference comes in 😀 snare drum sounds are like fashion... either you like the style or you don't, and it changes every couple years
My favorite albums for drum sounds (in no particular order):
Continuum (John Mayer)

what about no shame the album by tenth avenue north
Attaway Audio which DW set is that?
Attaway Audio “Line em up” is one of my reference tracks. One of the best sounding albums ever in my opinion. RIP Carlos Vega.
good list but I would add Steely Dan's 'the Royal Scam' album
I never would’ve thought to make the drum sound good you tune, the drum to where it sounds good, that’s just brilliant
This was super helpful and well explained! I also appreciated that you addressed common problems. Sometimes tuning videos are quick and the drummers do something and say 'thats perfect'. This definitely isn't my experience ahhaah
Yeah Travis is the man
Thank you for taking the time to post this. Everyone needs well tuned drums!
You bet! Travis is the man 🙌🏼🙌🏼
This video sucks.
He said it best, “Clean drums, God’s worthy of that, good sounding drums, He’s worthy of that too.”
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Is it normal to go around saying what God deserves to other people?
Damn dude, between this video and “Sounds like a drum” you guys shared some quality information. Wish I had seen this years ago
Me too! I never even knew this side of things
Oh Damn Dude.

Warrior Poet!! Love it! Thanks for the drum tips!
Travis is a true warrior poet.
One of the best tuning videos I’ve ever seen
The floor Tom needed alot of work to begin with
Yup! It happens

what are the tunes of each toms and snare? for both batter and resonant
So grateful for this video.
Me too!
Kicks and snare are king 👍
No argument here

you're welcome to come tune them and show us... shoot me an email and let's collab
New heads, two keys and pushing (stretching) as you go helps a lot. I think these heads are over their half life.
Also I think he did a good job with used heads and just an ear. No electronic input. Actually they sound jazzy! But that snare must have a wide power band! Wow Tune bot for that snare is a must! 👍
"Accuracy is my love language"
You should see his drum tracks when recorded to a click
Thnx guys..that really help me..👍🏻
Happy to help 😃
Always go 42 strands with deeper snares.
thanks for the tip!
How do you set your snare wire tension?
Joe Johnson it depends a little on context. For faster songs I tend to like it a little tighter and short, without choking the drum, and not as tight for slower songs- to increase sustain. You're welcome. Thanks for getting drums sounding good at the source 😃
What does "worship" have to do with this?
I also always line up the logos. That's the only way to do it!
"I'm not OCD. I just like my precision with more significant digits."
What model of DW kit is this?
Looks like a performance series? I think the only set close to DW is Sonor. For top of the line. But I had a set of 1970 Ludwig that were amazing!
400 what? Hz?
Yup!
"Accuracy is my love language" lol
Worship. Lol. Praise him! Hallelujah!

"Gloryfied finger tight" lol
I beg to differ!!!
Shinny Turds inc….
