Paul Halsall Was the film portrayal of thse pride marches accurate? In spirit at least? I would love to think so. (PS While one of us breathes, who remember Maggie and still hate her and what she did to our country, for just that long the miners' strike is not lost. It maybe in hibernation for now, but it is still a work in progress.)
I love you Bronwen for giving us this precious rendition of Bread and Roses. It made me weep when I saw the film, and it has just made me weep again with this clip. Bless you and all the best for you. Thank you.
Every time I hear it I cry. I'm very lucky to be born into a world a bit more understanding towards LGBT people, when I came out my family and community supported me, as did the gay people in this generation. The stories though, during the HIV crisis, are heartbreaking, I know one man who lost eleven friends in SIX MONTHS, I don't know how he has the strength to carry on, but he does. This song also pulls on my leftist sentiments, solidarity across boundaries is a beautiful thing, and I hope we all we keep holding out our hands to each other
Thank you Bronwen for this amazing performance. Here are the lyrics (taken from wikipedia) for non-native speakers. (Perhaps they could be added to the description?) As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day, A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray, Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses, For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!" As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men, For they are women's children, and we mother them again. Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes; Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses! As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread. Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew. Yes, it is bread we fight for-but we fight for roses, too!
I NOSTRI DIRITTI!!!
Just saw the movie this evening at a cinema in Sydney, Australia. Never before had I heard at least 1/3 of the packed audience clap at the end of a film.
Amazing. I've been looking for this since seeing the movie. What a great song, and fantastic rendition of a song of liberation!! It reminds me og my grandmother on the picket lines.
We (Aus Trade Union Choir) sang this song in Cuba last year and got a great reception every time. So moving and brought us both to tears in the movie! Go, our grandmothers!! Marjory
fantastico, è un momento del film che fa venire i brividi per l'emozione... bread and roses, cos'altro può meglio esprimere il nostro bisogno di nutrimento?
Hello! I hope the person who published this can see this! I’d like to get permission to use this song for our video campaign on upholding women’s rights..
Just saw this. So lovely. Does anyone also know the name of the very last song that sounds like it was sung by Jimmy Sommerville, as the credits are rolling,,,, the very very last song I think and quite a long one. Thank you. Happy New Year. In solidarity!
Claudio Molinaroli Thank you so much... However that is not the song I mean... I must have the order wrong, I will go and see if I can find it again. It is during the credits roll.... Thanks again....
Hara fun All Jimmy's stuff was cool, so listen to a compilation on you tube. You are bound to find the track, give your ears a treat. If I can find out which it is I will.
bruce bartup Yes Thanks Bruce, have spent time cavorting to JS over the years, for sure! Lovely. Dont know this song though but will try to find it toooooo. Best.
Hara fun Just in case you haven't found it on your own by now: The song you're looking for is called "For a friend" by The Communards, and as fas as know Jimmy Sommerville wrote it for Mark Ashton, actually.
I'm so glad you all enjoyed the scene! It was an amazing thing to be a part of.
I was on the Lesbian and Gay Pride Marches in London in 1984 and 1985. This was the part of the film where I just cracked.
HOLY SHIT, IT'S BRONWEN LEWIS

Shivers and goosebumps... :'-)
I'm rarely emotional at the cinema, but this song had me shedding a few tears because it's beauty.
Every time I hear it I cry.

I hope this beautiful movie can teach someone something. Glory to the bread and roses.
Growing up in Wales this was a regular sung by the drunks on a Friday/Saturday night. A powerful song that never fails to make me fill up.

I'm not sure what it is about this particular version of this song that makes me tear up every time I hear it
