      It's a great music choice- the ballet of Don Quixote (which is where her music is from), is danced like this, with a lot of jumps in quick succession towards the end. She's backloading for points, definitely, but also picked music and a story that suits it. Very clever

      exactly! I do think it was an unbalanced program but the music definitely fits with the compositions. There’s only 1-2 “jump-worthy” moments in the first half of the program anyways.

    I read many comments here. And I think it's so funny that when Sotnikova won a gold medal in 2014, many people used it as an argument "Adelina won because she made more jumps than Yuna."
    And now everyone is saying "Figure Skating is not just jumps."

    she was using the system to her advantage, and she did it smartly. using a ballet theme, in which the big jumps happen at the end, with the climax of the music. backloading is kinda cheap imo and creates a less aesthetic program but I at least appreciate that she used it in an artistic sense, this choreography with different music would be so notoriously bad

      I never understood why people had any issues with it not being well balanced. I mean, it was not unpleasant to watch, she carried great spins and decent step sequence in the start, then had incredibly difficult ending with a jump after jump. For me, personally, it was something exciting, the risk they were taking with that layout, the possible backfire(what happened at worlds), and even the jumps and spins at the end were not labored, and most of all- the backloaded layout did fit perfectly both of the programs, the interpretation and music.
      Now, dont get me wrong, Im not saying these programs are flawless masterpieces nor Im a huge fan of Alina's skating, but I enjoyed it far more than typical "balanced" programs of that era, 4 jumping passes right after start, then after half one combo, one solo triple and a 2A to end.

    • @pharriz

      @@hannibaljustincase9985 I get your point, but there is a rule in the official rules for Pcs, that the program has to be well balanced. And if it isnt judges have to punish that. Even if the program is the best u have ever seen and its a huge risk and so on... Its still not well balanced. So there for they HAVE to punish in Pcs.
      But they were just ignoring that completly. Luckily they changed the rules since then but, I think there is a super big, tilting Flutz and underrotating problem with the ladies...

      @@pharriz I'm not trying to defend Alina here per se, but I don't recall anything requiring "balanced elements" in composition. They only mentioned "Composition (CO): arrangement of movement in a program, including matching movements to music, purpose and originality of the program, ice coverage and use of space". And I think it's pretty subjective, as I feel that, in both of her programs, the fully backloaded layout fitted perfectly for the story and idea of them. Now, I'll say it again, I'm not trying to defend Alina, I'm just trying to understand other's points of view, so please don't take me as too defensive lol

      @@hannibaljustincase9985 Thats why I said I get your point. And dont get me wrong this goes for every skater not only Alina. This has nothing to do with my personal opinion or anything like that. I even liked the program. (allthough I think the whole factor X for the second half system is crap) But I hate it when ISU dont even know their own rules. Already when I skated in junior u always try to avoid doing elements of the same type back to back or even on similar spots on the ice. I mean noone is going to give you less points if you do two spins back to back but normally you already try to avoid that. This is all about isu not knowing their own rules for the arrangement of a program. Doing ALL jumps back to back HAS to get punished in PCS. I have no problem with them just cancel these rules and judge like it. But having these rules and some skaters hesitate because of that and then not punishing it is just a no go. And again this has nothing to do with Alina or any other skater. Its just the rules... For excample when I skated german nationals and did the opposite of Alina. (started with 3 jumps in short program, then 2 spins, then stsq and then last spin). Two judges came to me after that and asked me to change the arrangement of my program for international competition because they said that they gave me less points in Transitions and Choreography because of that. And now imagine skaters going to worlds or gran prix etc. Knowing that and building there programs like that. And then some skaters skate like Alina or whoever and build completly unbalanced programs like that and dont get punished. And again I get your point but this has nothing to do with telling a story to the music or skating a beautiful program. ^^ hope u get my point now.

  • @evanperilstein5308
    @evanperilstein5308 6 років тому +139

    I’m actually fine with all of the jumps in the second half of the program. It’s much more difficult, so if you can do it, why not? You shouldn’t be punished for it because saying the program isn’t well-balanced due to that implies that jumps are more important than spins and footwork. As a former figure skater, I can tell you that spins actually take more energy (are more tiring) than jumps. So she is not doing “nothing” for the first half of the program. She is actually doing elements that are just as important as the jumps. And putting all of the jumps in the second half works with the music because it starts off slow and then crescendos toward the end.
    So I don’t have a problem with Zagitova’s score. What I do have a problem with is that Higuchi’s program components should have been higher than Zagitova’s because she shows more emotion, skates a bit faster and she’s more refined, overall. This is nothing Zagitova can’t improve in the years to come, but right now Higuchi should have won with higher program components.
    I feel like I’m the only reasonable one here, but it seems that people just like to hate on the Russian skaters. I understand that people are still sour about Sotnikova winning the Olympics (I feel your pain. Yuna is my favorite skater of the last decade) and Medvedeva is consistently overscored, but I actually prefer Zagitova to Medvedeva. She’s not as expressive, but her jumps are harder and have better technique than Evgenia, even though they have the same coach. And she has time to work on her expressiveness. I think Zagitova will eventually pass Medvedeva, hopefully sooner rather than later. I’m already tired of Evgenia, especially since she routinely beats Yuna’s old scores with performances that are nowhere near as good. Her skating just isn’t as effortless, especially her jumps. You can see her really working her jumps. Zagitova’s jumps are even more effortless.

      Evan Perilstein I do prefer Alina over medvedeva as well but I think people are appreciating commentators that speak their mind and aren't sugarcoating what they see. I think Alina's program is more difficult than anything that evgenia has ever done... Her steps and movements match the music and she's not gaping her mouth as an excuse for "artistry". If anyone were to beat medvedeva it would be Zagitova and I would be happy to see her do it.

    • @hj8618
      @hj8618 6 років тому +22

      well balanced means that the jumps are spread evenly throughout the program; she should have points deducted because all the jumps are in the second half, aka unbalanced distribution of elements. Spins are more tiring, but jumps require fresher legs and a less tired body because of the mechanics of jumping which make that jumping can go wrong much easier than spins. As for the rest, i agree :)

      No one would hate on the Russian Skaters if they skated cleanly. You said you were a skater so you would understand the frustration one would feel if they don't get properly marked. Most of the time their jumps are not penalized when it should have. Were not blaming or hating on them because they are Russian. We hate that ISU judges are bribed... To which based on evidence is leaning towards Russia.
      I will tell this now I like Evgenia and Alina. They are both wonderful people and I commend them for all the sacrifices and hardwork they have invested into the sport. But they do not deserve their spots when they can't lift and land jumps properly. I want the spots to go to skaters who actually skated a clean program.
      But we cant take out why they do this to their programs as well. I believe the Russian culture is like S Korea where the medal matters. You need the medal medal medal. Soemtimes with that mentality you forget how true Artistry is translated onto the ice. For example. Yuna if she had not been with Orser and David could not have given us the magic on ice we saw. Yuna had the perfect jumps but she learned how to properly execute her artistic side due to them.
      So for Evgenia and Alina I hope they could leave Eteri (Just like Yulia) to better themselves and correct their jumps.

      Evgenia, Stanislava Konstantinova, Anastasia Tarakanova make me weep for the state of ladies figureskating I'm hoping this Russian nightmare will be over soon. I miss the days when the winner of world and the olympics could be from a variety of nationalities. Ukrainian, chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, American, Canada, Germany, Russian. Now its just its Russia-Russia-Japan or Russia- Japan- Russian or Russia- Canda- Canada Ugh. Its even worse in the juniors. If evgenia repeats I will never watch ladies figureskating again.

    As much as I don't really like Evgenia as a skater (she's really sweet, but I don't like her skating style), atleast she deserved her every win she had. Unlike Alina, whose wins are just so shady. But sadly, Evgenia doesn't deserve her world records.

    She's a good skater no doubt but no doubt also that the first 2 minutes she's just skating SLOWLY buying time. Evgenia wasn't the top junior skater at first because the bets were all in one basket, Julia Lipnitskaia....and when she failed, Evgenia was groomed to be the one due to her so called consistency and overall looks... This is how they will continue to play the field unless the other country federations do something about it

  • @brian4084
    @brian4084 6 років тому +31

    I guess the main question here is whether backloading should be allowed. I'm not in favor of it, I see it as a calculated move for points, and when you start thinking in terms of points, figure skating starts becoming more about points instead of artistry.
    The counterargument seems to be that backloading and artistry don't have to be mutually exclusive; you can have a backloaded program that is artistic. I disagree; the audience of a performance don't like things that are contrived or calculated. To illustrate my point, I'll use a hyperbole; imagine a program that had jumps only in the last minute of a program. Or imagine a program that had jumps only in the first minute of a program. Would you prefer that over a program that had jumps spread evenly throughout?
    The ISU is moving in a direction that is focusing less and less on artistry; we see this with backloading and tanos done on every single jump. It's a sport, so inevitably athletes will have to be more physically competitive as the sport progresses, but it should not be done where artistic value significantly decreases. Maybe the ISU should mandate a rule that at least two jumping passes must be required in the first half of a free program.

    She performed Level 4 Spins and Stsq in the first half. Her spins are outstanding. I will not describe those elements as nothing. Jumps are not everything in a program. If the choreography fits the structure of the music, why is backloading the jumps worse than frontloading the jumps or evenly distributing the jumps? It will be boring if every skater does the same structure, I personally like seeing different types of program structures, front, back and even. It is all about the overall performance and how she delivers.

    • @lololol6614
      @lololol6614 6 років тому +2

      Curious Curious well...uts the thrill..whether they will succeed it or not. Thats why its sports. Spins are nowhere close to jumps in aspect of difficulty. Thats why its called unbalanced. Cuz her first half was about art the other was about techniques. But its supposed to be done simultaneously, not seperately.

  • @jaovsd3282

    I love Zagitova because her jumps looks more clean about the russian ladies... She and Polina Tsurskaya are amazing because they can do an outside edge on Lutz, make the corret 3T as a second in a combination... But the fact that both are coached by Tutberitze says a lot... I still thinking that it all is not fault of the skaters, it’s the corrupt Russia and the associates who have infiltrated the system... If they be coached by other coach and had a good choreographer to don’t created more backloads programs, they could do incredible programs... I HATE SO MUCH COMBINATIONS WITH 3LO AS THE SECOND JUMP OMG... Because is more easy to underrotated and I think that is more difficult to fit into music as an element, and make the skaters loose the softness and the lightness that is an 3Lz+3T combination, its everithing about the points, I can’t.... Art in the first, please...

And this is very noticeable and just doesn't create a well structured or even pleasing or interesting program as a whole. It seems disjointed! Что зависть с людьми делает) четыре года успокоиться не могут. Не я понимаю засудили Юну в 2014, но так то и Слуцкую засудили в 2002. Мы ж не кидаемся на всех теперь из за этого.

    backloaded programs like this and medvdv appear to never really have any thought into the choreaography because the idea was always to rack up points. so if your intentions going into designing a program is to garner as many points as possible, then all the skating leading up to the jumps appears contrived, the footwork isnt well thought out and oftentimes seems incomplete, and the jumps inevitably wont fit in with the music or the choreography.
    the judges and isu really need to follow their own rules and penalize backloaded programs (but as we know if youre russian instead of penalizing them, they are given extra bonus points), it takes the artistry away and the entire program falls apart.

      I absolutely agree with this. Yes, you should design to maximize points, but not at the expense of the choreography or a well constructed program!

    Very rude of him! I find her skating lovely. Although I hope Carolina Kostner will get a medal, I wish Zagitova luck for her Olympics .
