    I've trained shotokan karate for a long time and I love this art, but I had to change and today I train boxing for a few years now, but when I see this guy Andre Bertel I see the essence of true karate, this master is scary the way he mastered the technique !

    This is a real karateka who has spent years learning and perfecting his techniques. I was expecting to see loads of the normal comments about "let's see him against mma", but the only one was, "Looks good against targets that don't move". One of the best videos I've seen!!

    I did my 1st Kyu exam about 18 years ago and haven’t really trained in karate since.
    I’m watching your vids as I love the technique, and I’m wishing I had someho continued.
    My psychology to obsess into a financial career led me to sacrifice my karate training, as I put all my energy into the career. No time left.
    Now I’ve gone from 64kg old fighting weight to 84kg .. and it seems like such a long road back to get to my old karate shape and abilities.
    I suppose one just has to start slowly.
    Though right now my work is so brutal it’s all I can do to survive from it.
    Ok. I’ve solved it: working hard in karate for me will ‘look’ like not much.. but I’ll be working hard just to do a little. (Just to do a few movements while in a state of exhaustion).
    And that will progress me.
    Step by step.

      @@DenniWintyr You're right Denni. As I mentioned a few days ago, Andre's stationary karate is excellent. Shame that unlike most of the truly great instructors he never was a great competitor either in New Zealand (he's only really competed in those small scale WUKO, KANZ joke like local Shotokan events in NZ; the one time he did participate in a tournament where the cream of NZ competitors competed he got cleaned up by C. W.) or indeed internationally, other than his Kumamoto (population 1.7 million) kata competition title. It doesn't diminish his stationary ability but it adds nuance and perspective to his grandiose claims :-). Those who know Andre know humility was never his strength.

    I'm surprised to see that much creativity in karate which tends to be very conservative. How was Master Asai's karate received in Japan by his peers?

    • @andrebertel
      @andrebertel  2 роки тому +1

      Osu! Yes, great point. Asai Sensei is regarded as a 'karate genius' here in Japan, but indeed genius also implies eccentricity. Osaka Sensei told me "no one can do Asai Sensei's karate".
      Nakamura Masamitsu Sensei calls him "one in a million karateka" meaning, he was a 'one off' in his time.
      Both were referring to the extreme flexibility and seemingly endless variations.
      In my case, I am a standard Shotokan guy, but Asai Sensei personally helped me to expand on that, which I'm deeply grateful for.
      Fortunately, Asai Sensei stressed others not to copy him, but rather, find their own unique way. However, whichever way this is, that one must perfect softness and use natural energy, if one's upper limits (speed and impact power) are to be surpassed; furthermore, if one's skill is to keep advancing after they pass their physical prime.
      I have met some senior instructors here in Japan who don't like Asai Sensei's karate and only like lots of repetition and hardness.... However, as they have aged their karate always diminishes quickly. In Asai Sensei's own words, "the post WW2 karate was hard, to build back strong spirit". Asai Sensei wanted to return to karate to its bujutsu form.
      What stunned me about Asai Sensei is that until the last few months of his life his karate was just getting better and better. That, to me, will always be inspirational.
      Kindest regards and best wishes from Oita City!
      Osu, Andre Bertel

    I have some questions regarding the techniques.
    At 0:23, are the whipping motions used shotu-uchi wasa or some variation? If so, how effective is a strike to the body with them? As they are some kind of "slapping" I am not sure a chudan strike with this kind of technique would be very effective.
    On a similar note, there are lots of spins involved in the style, are they a trainingmethod to learn to go with the Momentum and coordinate in space? (E.g. at 2:27 going with the Momentum of the tsuki, ) Or is the spinning actually meant to be applied in fighting? (As in my experience, spinning is very hard to pull of to be not dangerous)
    ありがとう

    • @andrebertel
      @andrebertel  4 роки тому +5

      Osu, yes the rear targets are not the body, that is to protect.
      The impression of slaps is wrong. But I thought the same thing until I learned from Asai Sensei.
      Spinning is less often effective than it is an excellent training method. So your analysis is correct in that regard.
      In sum, these videos do not suffice! If you come to train here in Japan as a renshusei at my dojo and/or attend a seminar - everything is clear.
      Kindest regards from Japan. I hope that helped clarify a few things for you!!

    Nice and pretty but Tyson used to say everyone has a plan until they get hit. I’m not saying that this guy doesn’t have any skills as you can see that he does, but still he’s doing techniques that are staged in a control environment with No resistance or a opposition. So I’ll reserve my optimism on how good he might be in a real fight against a trained fighter.Martial arts is based on Theory. so I would really like to see the practicality of the techniques that he’s performing in a real life fight and situation. until I see some real footage of him actually fighting. I will remain skeptical. But I did enjoy the video.

    • @andrebertel
      @andrebertel  3 роки тому +2

      I agree with you. One cannot ascertain ones fighting skills via the observation of basic training.
      Working in security for more than a decade, I had my fair share of fights. Early on I learned that winning competitions and real fights were different beasts, and I adapted accordingly.
      Definitely the basics are critical, but not the full package either; moreover, as you said, it cannot establish one's effectiveness (by mere observation of one's movements) in jiyu kumite, nor, indeed the street.
      Kind regards and thanks for the post! More martial arts practitioners need to be conscious of this point. So I appreciate your comment! Osu
