  • Learn the basic steps to create a beautiful, living, indoor decoration with kokedamas! These kokedamas are balls of moss that provide a unique substrate and watering medium for types of plants that are well suited to low-humidity environments.
Instead of sitting in a pot that gets air flow on only the top side, these plants live inside a ball of moss that gets air flow on all sides. These kokedamas are beautiful, but take a level of dedication and maintenance to care for properly and ensure that your plant thrives.
Here, I am re-doing my old orchid Kokedama to explain the basics of kokedama construction. You can learn more about plant care, how to emulate the natural world with your kokedama, and more at www.TheArtofEcology.com

Thanks for the video! Making my own orchid kokedama, Ive got a question! What if you only have green or brown sphagnum? Do you need both or will either work?

No you don't need both - sphagnum is the most important one, the other is just for looks and acts as an extra barrier, but not necessary.

That can’t be good for the orchid. Does it hinder the growth or flowering

I am wondering how you hung it from that string? I couldn’t tell how that was attached?

When I wrapped the sphagnum moss with the outer twine, I made sure that there were bits of twine that ran on either side of the base of the orchid. Then, I took a separate string (the hanging string), and tied each end to the twine that was part of the moss wrapping. There are a variety of ways you could do it though, that's just what I did here. Hope that helps!
