@@hamandeggs23 agreed. It’s an “easier” watch. Also if I miss some parts I can go back later and it doesn’t really matter when it comes to continuing to watch. Where as if I’m watching a movie and I miss 10 minutes then I could miss a giant plot point.
Was gonna say the same. So glad she goes into reasons she does or doesn’t like books so you can decide maybe it’s something you’d like even if she doesn’t.
1:14:45 “Stephen Graham Jones said ‘Horror. Creepy. Dread.’” idk why but this sent me 😭 I’m just imagining him not reading the book but being asked to blurb it anyway
She wants a full length novel to be a short story and wishes a short story was a novel. she is my favourite booktuber who happens to make brilliant movies called vlogs.
“I feel like if you don’t like poetry, you can still name, off the top of your head, a couple of poetry books that have come out in any given year.” I feel like I’m being grossly overrestimated
Really?? I'm shocked haha I feel like everyone knows Rupi Kaur & that every celebrity from that girl on Riverdale to Lana Del Rey are cashing in on poetry collections this year.
I just wanna say thank you a billion times for making these super long videos for us! I'm sure they take a ton of work, but they're so much fun to watch!
Kayla talking about Tender is The Flesh: "The characters are not necessary FLESHED out" I don't know if you meant to make that connection but I laughed anyway
the year of the witching did something for me I cannot explain...like it really fulfilled everything I need in a book rn from magic to social commentary to characters and romance...so glad I read it and glad you loved it too!!!!
I love what you said about the main character in The Year of the Witching not immediately being against the powers at be, and how she grew and changed her perspective. I definitely am looking for more of that!
Mike's book reviews had whole October dedicated to horror and it was great, I ended up loving many new horror books I haven't known.. Heres his top horror list: ua-cam.com/video/57Q0zKNZJNc/v-deo.html
I’m so happy you loved The Year of the Witching! ❤️ The whole time you were talking about it, I was nodding along in total agreement. I voted for it in the Goodreads Awards and I’m so glad I took a risk and read it!
This new ranking system is *ingenious,* especially for horror. Just the ranking style alone helped me better understand the genre. It also helps elucidate that horror is indeed more of a feeling because it’s a genre defined by subjective reactions - no one is frightened or tested by exactly the same things exactly the same way. I struggle with the overlap between thriller and horror bc it seems that I seek out thrillers for the reasons that my friends/peers seek out horror. Long story short, thank you so much for this ranking system and this breakdown of horror! 💖
Loved this video. The Year of the Witching was already on my radar but is now on a priority list for me to buy soon. I wasn't aware of The Hollow Places until I watched this and it's now on that same priority list. They both sound like my cup of tea and books I might love.
I’m so late to this video but can I just say the editing is superior!!! 😌 it’s seriously so good I’m obsessed and I appreciate all the time and effort that went into this video! Also.... The Bright Lands is so good and so weird and one of my favorites of the year and I think if you give it another chance you’d probably really enjoy it!! 🥰
Seeing you gush about The Year of the Witching just made my entire night!! It's one of my favorite books of the year and I've been trying to force it on everyone 😅❤️ I hope more people pick it up now!!
I am so glad you love The Year of the Witching! Seeing you gush about it made me so happy! It was one of my favourite books of the year and, as someone who doesn't read anything scary/horror - I was pretty spooked. It definitely felt like horror to me 😂
Thxs for this! I dont read much horror and you've convinced me to read Hollow Places since you said it wasn't scary. Portal stories and weird is right up my alley. The Only Good Indian sounds like it may work for me too. Glad u ended the vlog and the month w/ 2 of your favs
I love when you do these videos! I also really need to read horror because I think it would be one of my favorite genres. The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is my favorite book of the year!🍑
The Only Good Indians is one of my favorite books! The “elk head woman” is a -thing- like a form of the Wendigo. When I looked it up, I was floored by the story’s complexity.
100% adding Hollow Places to my TBR now! One of my favorite books this year, Oval, is super weird and quirky, with unpredictable flow. Not horror, but just plain interesting.
Would you please read “My Dark Vanessa” by Kate Elisabeth Russel? It is a very heavy and sad book so maybe do read about it a bit before you start reading, if you decide to do so. It was in the finals of the Goodreads awards as well. (but obviously not horror lol) Love your videos and hopefully you have a nice December! ❤️
I appreciate you doing this so much. I am strictly a horror reader and a huge fan of you and who you are and your channel. Your the bomb. Com Aside from the obvious , as a strictly horror reader who reads constantly. I have only read one book on the whole of this list and video. Tender is the flesh. Put of all of them maybe Grady Hendricks ok, but those 2 were probably the only ones that should truly be on a horror list. In MY opinion. Hunter Shea, Chad Lutske Or Adam Cesear(who also has a channel) is a great place to go for new horror. I read vintage and new but those are three names alot of non horror readers may not be familiar with that are greatly respected and loved by the horror community. I could go on but I appreciate so much you doing this for your peeps like me who eat it up. Xoxo
I was waiting the entire video to see what you thought of The Year of the Witching and it was definitely worth the hour and 20-minute wait to see your thoughts on it
I really loved the category that you use to rate your horror books (scary, unsettled, intriging, weirdness/uniquiness). Thank you for share! This is going to help me in my reviews 🇧🇷
I’m only a couple minutes into this review, but I want to say I love the introduction and how you present the books. Okay, so now I’ll continue listening.👏🏼🙋🏻♀️
I was shocked at how many of the horror picks I had already read and have in my top books of the year! Who knew I liked horror?! The Year of the Witching is amazing and I can't believe it's a debut.
The Only Good Indians is now one of my favourite books of all time! I think it was so well done, and it's a crime I did not know about Stephen Graham Jones earlier. I also really enjoyed Southern Book Club though I totally get what you mean by conflicting thoughts about it. I did enjoy that it had a lot of classic vampire elements that reminded me of Dracula in a more modern setting.
the absolute joy i felt once you updated us about how much you were loving "the year of the witching" by alexis henderson,,,,immaculate. i'm actually trying to read more of the horror genre as of late; right now i'm reading "the haunting of hill house" by shirley jackson and i can already tell that gothic horror isn't my most favorite subgenre of horror, but i did like "mexican gothic" by silvia moreno-garcia more so your discussion about these different categories of horror was very much insightful and something i want to think more about. "plain bad heroines" and "the only good indians" are actually on my tbr so!! i can't wait to get to them soon. no matter what though, i'm really happy that you voted for "the year of the witching" because it's not guaranteed it will actually win but you've gotta give credit where it's due so i love how you made that decision. this comment is very long but overall, i enjoyed this video immensely :')
The quote you read from The Year of the Witching is the quote I had to stop everything and pause my audiobook in order to write down. LOVED that quote and soooo hope we finally get a book two soon.
Watching all one hour and thirty minutes of this incredible movie on a Friday night 😛 also FUCKING GO OFF AND ALL THE PROPS TO YOU FOR COMPLETING THIS CHALLENGE?? Your mind I cannot ✨🔥 also love the hairrr 😍
You briefly mentioned Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark, and if you haven't gotten to it yet, you definitely should! I read it a few weeks ago, and it's easily in my top 10 this year, and I don't typically even like horror stories. It's super short, less than 200 pages. It was so atmospheric and I couldn't put it down. A must read for sure!
Yay I love these types of vlogs!! The different rankings was really interesting and unique. All the books really showed that horror is not just that “oh booooo it’s a ghost/ murder” that a lot of people think horror just is.

"the characters are not necessarily fleshed out" SHE SAID ABOUT A BOOK WITH CANNIBALISM
sometimes I try
I literally snorted. When she didn't react to what she said I immediately wondered what was wrong with me.
I was thinking the same thing!
I CACKLED
when i tell u i dropped EVERYTHING for this full length feature film
I was on my phone but when I saw the notification I opened my laptop
I don’t usually watch LaLa videos this long! Will this be one of the best movies I’ve seen?
WE LOVE A FULL LENGTH FILM QUEEN
I love how I say I can't commit to watching a 90 minute film but will immediately drop everything to watch a 90 minute Books and Lala video
It feels more like I'm sitting down and listening to a friend talk about what they love instead of having to deal with plot and character development

Yeah. Also I can watch this at 3x or 4x speed and not miss anything.
I wish I could retweet this

The best and most horrifying horror book of 2020 is the news
Truth 😂
And anything involving Politicians
If that ain't the truth...
Lol
HAHA! So true!!!
Kayla using bunny emoji to indicate the level of weirdness ;D
The only acceptable emoji after reading Bunny
Exactly my thoughts! I loved Bunny and its weirdness xD

I thought this was a reference to Alice In Wonderland, but now I have to find this Bunny book 😂
