Don Giovanni, K. 527 (titre complet : Il dissoluto punito ossia il Don Giovanni ; titre français : Don Juan), est un opéra en deux actes et en langue italienne du genre « dramma giocoso » (« drame joyeux ») de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, créé à Prague le 29 octobre 1787, sur un livret de Lorenzo da Ponte inspiré du mythe de « don Juan ».
Don Giovanni est, avec La Flûte enchantée, l'opéra qui eut le plus d'influence sur les compositeurs romantiques par son mélange d'éléments comiques (buffa) et tragiques (seria). L'ouvrage est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'un des opéras majeurs de Mozart, avec Les Noces de Figaro, Così fan tutte et La Flûte enchantée, mais aussi de tout l'art lyrique. Amo la musica che va dai Carmina Burana (quelli originali) ,attraverso la musica rinascimentale, alla musica barocca fino alla musica classica dei Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, ecc... Non amo particolarmente le Opere, ma quando ascolto il Dongiovanni e le altre opere di Mozart non posso non rimanere estasiato dal felice connubio tra musica e testi. W Mozart W Da Ponte

I saw this production in Venice back in 2017, and it really is excellent.
The music is beautiful, the production is lavish, the mise-en-scène interesting -- but attempts to modify the intentions of the original author & plot line -- to turn D.G. into some kind of indestructible Svengali/Sade who escapes death massively miss the whole point of the exercise. It makes all the time invested seem worthless. Stick to the original plot line. Have a statue arrive. Et cetera. (Naked bodies are no longer novel, nor exciting. For the serious music lover, it's really all about the Music. The acting is merely there to support the music. This cast acted beautifully, by the way, but the director's vision was abusive. I don't like watching my opera singers having to contort themselves, roll around on the floor, et cetera. If I want to watch Bruce Willis's "Die Hard," I will.)

Le voci, per quel che si può giudicare dal video, non sono di prima qualità, ma si disimpegnano bene ! I was fortunate enough to be there on the opening night. This is still the best production of Don Giovanni that I have ever seen; and I have seen a lot!

What should I say? I wish I would just have listened rather than attempt to double my pleasure with the visual. Are the lyrics of any consequence? It seems not! As for the "mise en scène"... someone appears to be either obsessed or sexually repressed. Dommage.

As it was recorded for a French TV channel - see the hard-coded subs - there's not much chance of that. The production from Rome that's also here has English subtitles, ditto the Finnish National Opera one, and translations of the libretto are easy to find.

@s.m. I agree! The music and the singing is great, but the direction is only mediocre. The scenes with the Commendatore don't work at all! This is too bad because the singer has a wonderfully deep and powerful voice. But the whole scene is apparently just a drunken hallucination of Don Giovanni. However, this doesn't explain why Leporello and Donna Elvira also see the statue. This doesn't really work for me. The ending is a complete let-down.

Sceneggiatura offre gratuite semplificazioni che Da Ponte e Amadè avrebbero sonoramente contestato con ...peti e sguaiataggini da loggione. La cena è diventata una scena postribolare, mentre andava lasciata la lettura... gastronomica che ammiccava a ben altri pasti. Esplicitare il sottinteso prima di essere un’ovvietà è un errore.
Effettivamente la regia è scandalosa la scena finale poi non parliamone, un'orrenda orgia che non ha nulla a che vedere con la sceneggiatura.
Ma oggi c'è ben poco rispetto per librettino e compositori
In generale bello, ma per me ha un grandissimo problema: mi sembra che se il sottotitolo di un'opera è "Il dissolto punito", e alla fine il dissoluto è soltanto chiuso in una stanza e poi in un finale a sorpresa "ne esce e ride", allora il titolo e il significato dell'opera vengano traditi. Il finale del Don Giovanni è che lui viene condannato a vivere una pena perpetua che lo rende incapace di fare altri danni. Ora, che ciò avvenga "dentro" di lui, o in un incubo creato da una visione, o all'inferno vero e proprio può essere soggetto ad interpretazione. Ricordiamo però che nel finale canonico Don Giovanni viene trascinato vivo dai diavoli all'inferno, dove dunque si suppone che rimanga fino al giorno del giudizio. Quindi, pur volendo rinnovare la lettura di questa punizione e renderla più moderna, in nessun caso si può fare in modo che Don Giovanni abbia la facoltà di uscire dalla sua pena perpetua come se niente fosse. Va anche osservato che se gli altri sono felici nella scena finale, lo sono perché sono certi di essersi sbarazzati di lui per sempre. Se lui può uscire dalla stanza, allora l'esistenza della scena finale perde di senso, oppure si sta dicendo che tutti loro sono stupidi, che però non è il significato dell'opera. Per il resto, posso condividere la scelta di modernizzare, anche di dare più attenzione ai personaggi femminili e mi sembra un bellissimo esperimento, una cosa che andava fatta. Quindi approvo assolutamente questa scelta sperimentale. Sono d'accordo con altre critiche rispetto al fatto che la musica è veramente velocissima, troppo veloce. Consiglio poi di fare attenzione a questa cosa strana che una quantità infinita di cose che i personaggi dicono e le ambientazioni e loro movimenti non coincidono fra loro. In modica quantità ciò non è un problema, ma la quantità di volte che ciò avviene non è modica e diventa fastidioso. Questo forse bisognava "attutirlo", cambiando interni ed esterni più spesso (dire "stelle, che vedo!" in una stanza chiusa, sussurrare a qualcuno perché lo dice il libretto, ma farlo mentre i due attori hanno fisicamente in mezzo la persona di cui sussurrano sono comportamenti che non hanno senso.). Però insomma, una scelta coraggiosa che ha dei punti di forza
Me ha gustado mucho la dirección, ágil y contundente y dejando respirar a los cantantes en las arias más lentas como en Dalla sua pace. La puesta en escena original quizá algo monótona. El personaje de Don Giovanni sale como un psicópata de principio a fin no me acaba de gustar esa visión de él aunque algo tenía. La escena final no me gusta cuando el texto de lo que cantan dice una cosa y en escena pasa algo totalmente distinto como cuando Leporerllo le quita comida a Don Giovanni o en lugar de una estatua hay un ataúd.

Just ill-conceived. And the commendatore's statue was his corpse in a coffin and he returns as such? Better than the one at the Rome Opera, where he limps out in a walking frame. 👎👎👎
The production at the Met, I believe, with Mr. Ramey and Mr. Moll, at the death scene was thrilling and frightening. Mr. Kill truly looked otherwordly.

On se passerait de la partie de fesses finales qui sbre dans le pornographique. Dommage cela salit la pièce, au demeurant fort bien chantée.
Il se trouve que l'orgie fait partie du livret, même si elle est rarement mise correctement en scène, ne vous en déplaise. Mozart ni Da Ponte n'étaient, comme vous, des moralistes, mais de vrais libertins.
Il problema di questa regia è la lettura che Michieletto ha fatto di Don Giovanni. Le scelte attoriali ne fanno un personaggio piatto che rimane tale e quale dall'inizio alla fine dello spettacolo. L'idea di sottolineare la sua natura psicotica non è una brutta scelta. Il problema sta nel non aver dato spessore al personaggio. Mancano momenti dove questo suo tratto dominante sia bilanciato da carateristiche contradditorie. Rappresentarlo come un violentatore sin dalla prima scena non ha sicuramente aiutato. L'orgia finale perde in intensità perché tutte le scelte sono too much sin dall'ouverture. Se Michieletto avesse raccontato un evoluzione progressive del personaggio nella sua violenza, la sua idea di base sarebbe stata molto più fruibile.

L'unica idea registica/scenografica è quella di chiudere la vicenda in un palazzone settecentesco cangiante. Non c'è percezione della notturnità dell'opera né distinzione fra i vari personaggi con le dame vestite come delle Mirandoline cui manca solo il grembiule. Per il resto è il solito don Juan orgiastico già visto mille volte. Ma ormai dopo migliaia di allestimenti è ben difficile mettere su una messinscena degna. Il guaio è quello di voler fare intendere ogni volta un sottotesto che albergherebbe nel libretto e nello spartito. Ma lo spazio di manovra è ormai ridotto.

The music and the singing is absolutely gorgeous, and listening is a pleasure! But the direction doesn't quite work for me. While all singers are really good, none of them has been allowed to develop personality and charisma. Especially Don Giovanni is purely a villain without any charme whatsoever! It isn't really plausible why all these women fall for him, since he seems to prefer violence and rape instead of seduction. This isn't really DaPonte's and Mozart's Don Giovanni. Their Don is definitely a bad boy - but he has also a lot of personality. He is a true swashbuckler who loves all women, and he is daring and very brave. He is a free spirit, and he doesn't care what others think about him. And even if he has to face something as frightening as an animated statue he isn't impressed. And let's be honest, we would be very disappointed if Don Giovanni would've been repentant in the end. We all want him to say "No!!!" to the spooky statue of the Commendatore 😉 But nothing of this is apparent in this direction. It also doesn't help that everybody looks alike and is dressed in grey! It's very hard to tell the women apart, since they all wear very similar grey dresses. I realize that this has a purpose: all women are the same for Don Giovanni. But Mozart's and Da Ponte's women all have very different personalities. They are not at all alike, and they all act and react differently, and Mozart wrote different music for each woman. The direction should have allowed them to show a bit more personality!
The final scene is extremely disappointing. Don Giovanni is just drunk and probably hallucinating. But that doesn't explain why Leporello and Donna Elvira believe that they see the statue as well!
Many years ago I have seen a great "Don Giovanni" in Covent Garden with the wonderful Simon Keenlyside as the dirty Don. It works muvh better IMO and it's available on UA-cam.

Secondo me questa versione si rifà molto alla versione del 1954 e lì guarda caso nella scena della cena ci sono delle donne immediatamente cacciate da Elvira… Quella probabilmente era un’allusione dato che nel ‘54 forse non hanno osato essere più espliciti… E secondo me in questa versione hanno preso il balzo da quella...

我覺得兩位女歌唱家表情都好浮誇，動作又多多，好誇張，沒有古典味服裝似市井兼有點粗魯，睇到頭暈，可能習慣看從前的女高音表情動作都比較含蓄感覺斯文得多，當然歌唱技巧都是一流。還有開始沒有劍擊一場，改為屎於亂棍下，非常非常失色～

Scelte di direzione a dir poco sciatte. Don Giovanni che molesta Donna Anna smascherato? Leporello intristito mentre canta "Madamina"? Masetto che canta da solo "birbonaccia, malandrina" mentre Zerlina è già in un'altra stanza? E mille altre esempi simili. Ma la regia ha letto il libretto? L'ha capito?
Qui mi sembra sia stata fatta una grande spesa per allestimenti e costumi, ma si è messa poco la testa nell'esecuzione.

What the hell did I just watch?
This is probably the most explicit example of directors/creative team thinking that audiences are stupid and must be titillated to at all times in order to keep their attention. DG is about an unrepentant seducer who does actually manage to have enough charm to amass quite a following of codependents. This interpretation lacks any subtlety, possibly because the idea is that modern operagoers are either too stupid to handle subtlety, or too bored to have their attention sustained and thus need to be shocked and titillated at the same time. For hundreds of years DG has captivated audiences without having to stoop to such orgiastic banality. The intensity and shock value culminated in the Stone Guest dragging the title character off to Hell. THAT is where the shock should come from. Badly done, La Fenice. You make the French look downright *traditional*
