- A man with OCD fears he'll be murdered.
SIT WITH FEAR is used with permission from Jason Blackman. Learn more at / mrjasonblackman .
Adam is a man in throes of obsessive-compulsive disorder. He's in therapy, but even getting through the door to his own home is an ordeal, due to his rigidly ritualistic behavior. He fears that if he doesn't do his set of rituals, he will be murdered.
He contemplates stopping, allowing himself to be killed, and experiencing some relief and peace. But when he does, he confronts his darkest demons -- including one that seems all too real.
Written and directed by Jason Blackman, this short horror film has compelling insight into what it's like to have obsessive-compulsive disorder. It uses the expressionistic darkness of the horror genre, complete with moody visuals and jagged editing rhythms, to reflect Adam's psychological hinterland. And with thoughtful writing and performances, it achieves a marked degree of empathy and compassion for an often misunderstood condition.
The film begins with Adam consumed by his rituals, which torture him mentally and prevent him from living a normal life. As viewers, we understand how Adam's condition curtails his quality of living and his peace of mind. It even makes him late to his online therapy appointments because he can't get the key insertion into the door just right. The storytelling is deft and full of depth, using the vocabulary of horror -- jump scares, monsters, mutilated fingertips and the like -- not to drive forward a plot but delve deep into a character.
Actor George Basil -- often seen in comedic roles -- powerfully evokes the agony and meekness of someone governed by fear. His engaging performance gets at the tension of someone who has the self-awareness to know how his condition is damaging him, and yet he cannot change, despite that self-insight. This inability adds to his shame, amplifying his suffering. But when Adam finally stops, he encounters the darkest part of his psyche in a memorable conversation.
Resonant and unsettling in equal measure, SIT WITH FEAR takes its title from the therapeutic notion of "sitting with your fear," where we acknowledge what makes us scared and small, and learn to listen to that emotional input with equanimity. When Adam sits with his fear, he learns a lot about himself, as well as the nature of fear. He learns to extend compassion to it, and himself in the process. Of course, being a horror film, it's not a fully happy ending, especially in a genre where fear asserts its dominance in the human condition, reminding us that it's never truly gone. - Фільми й анімація
I’m a Paramedic & ended up talking to a girl suffering a manic psychotic break from schizophrenia. I felt so bad for her because she truly believed that if she left town they were going to shave her head & dye it blue & all her family, her plants & her pets would die. That was 21 yrs ago & I still remember how my heart ached for her that she had (in her mind) this huge responsibility on her. I hope she’s doing well these days & has her illness under control. My OCD was not as developed as that of the man in the video but I vividly remember the intrusive negative thoughts, the constant counting of bites so that there’s at least 10 per every snack eaten, times I looked at myself in the mirror because I needed my reflection just right or something bad would happen to me or my family… light switches having to be turned on and off repeatedly in a certain pattern and a certain number of times etc. Although I managed to learn how to control it for the most part, there’s still small things that I would do as a part of my everyday routine that have an OCD undertone to them. However, I count my lucky stars to have been able to get most of my compulsions under control. OCD is honestly a terrible disorder, some people don’t quite realise how nerve-wracking and time-consuming it can be.
Thanks for sharing… so tough

Two things: 1) what a powerful, accurate depiction of OCD; and 2) it took me a while to figure out this actor is the same guy who was in Training Wheels (also on Omeleto). What a great actor he is!!!

Even as a layman I thought the ending was extremely inconsiderate of people with OCD
I love this depiction of the experience of being that man. As a person who has had OCD as long as I can remember, I totally get that experience of feeling like NOW I've overcome it at last and then it gets you again just when you think it's all over. But this film is also about realising that it's NOT REAL, the fear seems real - but fear is an illusion - it's all in our own minds - and we can live with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and BE OKAY. And there are ways to deal with it - like speaking to a therapist regularly and getting a lot of intense physical exercise. And yes, regardless, we are still alive - we still do things anyway and we still achieve things anyway and we will still become our best anyway - even if we have to live through the fear. OCD can be beside us but we will NEVER STOP LIVING :)
Thanks for watching!!
Btw I love this takeaway- beautifully written
@@mrjasonblackman Thank you
My daughter is autistic and cannot grasp abstraction... she also has trouble understanding that movies are not real. And she has debilitating OCD. If she ever saw this film, she would give up completely and let her OCD run her life 100% because clearly she will die if she does not, just like the man in this film. I have OCD and I can appreciate how fear is personified, etc, etc, but this film is potentially dangerous to a segment of our population, and that breaks my heart.
@@SiberianHuskyMomma hi Gabriela, writer & director here. Thanks so much for sharing. I myself do not have a child with autism & OCD, so I can only imagine how challenging that can be at times. You seem like a thoughtful person and a wonderful mother and I would assume that, while she is a still a child, you have strict guard rails up to make sure she does not consume this sort of content. I wouldn’t recommend this film for neurotypical children either. Thanks for watching and joining the conversation!
My rabbit says this film does an excellent job of portraying Fear as something that sneaks around silently and stalks you menacingly, like a cat, and also *SUDDEN VERY LOUD NOISE.* My rabbit further says that while well-meaning humans may try to reassure you everything is fine, it is wise to Remain Vigilant.

My boyfriend has OCD and I never knew how intense it could be till he told me a few episodes, not in detail. I wish everyone that is struggling to never forget you are an amazing human being, stronger than most and not alone :)
For a moment he thought that he defeated or overcame is OCD but as you can see he kept feeding his fears which was illustrated with his fingernails. He was trying to fool himself because in the back of his mind he still had fear that he was going to die. He started questioning himself why would he pay someone to help him overcome something that he can't or already accepted to live with. At the last scene he didn't actually died but I believe it pictured fear gaining victory over him which would now cause him to go back to his natural OCD ways. I can be wrong but it's just my take on it
As the writer & director of this film I very much like this take!

Portraying a mental disease on screen is difficult, this guy did an excellent job.
Writer & director here. Thanks so much for watching!
Wow, powerful! So freaking insane, it blew my mind!! The debilitating fear, the simple 'just take a step forward and then two; soon, it will all be okay' advice from others about a situation of intense pain beyond their comprehension (in this case the therapist), taking the first step and feeling almost euphoric, invincible, only to find yourself back - worse because this time you know you've tried and failed. The tangibility of fear, the empathy towards it, the almost paternal willingness to help it - just incredibly awesome!
Anyone who's struggling with a mental health issue or supporting another who's struggling should watch this to know they're not alone and maybe empathetically understand the potential of fear - kudos to the entire crew!!

How utterly exhausting and awful to have this
It's natural to fear death. I think OCD is the evolved part of the human brain who could live in complete Harmony in its surroundings with everyone else still being beholden to the reptile brain that was dependent on identifying patterns in the natural world to keep it alive and safe.
It has to do with a hyper awareness of the importance of mortality and the inability to escape it but the need to preserve life at all cost.
I would think that this film would be very damaging to someone with this affliction and make them fear trying.
For a second there I thought the priest in this was played by either Jaquin phoneix or Collin Farrell

My ocd isn’t the kind where everything needs to be perfect. It’s the kind where I go through phases of obsession over different things and also impulsively think about things knowing no matter how much I think or worry ab it, I can’t control it. Yet I still must think ab it
So stressful. Do you know what subtype you have
@@PrincessMermista well as I know it’s a mix of rumination and intrusive thoughts. Like my main thing is philosophy and existence. Like I just spent the last hour thinking about existence and the idea of eternity and the mind blowing fact tht I even exist. That is an example ab my ruminating side of ocd. As of intrusive thoughts, it’s not as bad, but sometimes I’ll have thoughts of hurting my dog or killing my mom even tho Ik I never would nor want to actually do it, I’ll spend time fantasizing about it. I also often times feel like everyone hates me and talks sht about me especially at work even tho there would be no evidence of any of tht taking place. It’s like I know how to rationalize yet my mind won’t let me. It’s almost like a have split personality
Interesting my bff is always reading philosophy and it's the only thing that helps their OCD . They have hit and run/ unwanted sexual thoughts and its absolutely terrifying for them. I can always tell when they are ruminating when I see their eyes. Its absolutely scary. They dont have any physical compulsions but it's all in their mind which is why it's Called pure OCD
Very well done. I think it does a great job of conveying why OCD obsessions are so scary. Although as someone with OCD I was very anxious the whole way through, lol. I was hoping in the end that when he moved the glass it would have been okay after all, that it turned out that it was okay to resist the compulsions...but it's horror, I knew that probably wasn't going to happen. 😅

These shorts are so incredible, they're addictive.
All of them are unique, unpredictable, atypical storylines that are intriguing, with great actors and each one has the most brilliant cinematography and music that is always Perfect for the story.
These shorts are like a mixed bag of Twilight Zone, Black Mirror, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Tales from the Crypt, and something completely unique and trail-blazing. I love every piece of this, am very glad to have found it, and can't wait to watch more.

No way, they definitely don’t think they will get murdered. That’s a big misunderstanding cause your right they may act as if because how much they are willing to do to avoid the “unknown” but they don’t actually believe they will get murdered. OCD doesn’t mean schizophrenia, or psychosis.

I thought this was really great. The ending was a shock and left a bad feeling but that’s what mental illness is like so I think that’s the point. You can start to feel like you’ve beaten your fears or your troubles, perhaps for good, then they come right back to viciously paralyse you again if you put a foot ‘wrong’. To be understood and represented when you have a mental illness, and to help others understand, can only be a good thing. A smart, thoughtful portrayal.

His wife was mad that he wore her yellow rain coat?
This wasn't OCD, this was a full blown psychosis and probably medical malpractice for the shrink to send her patient off to challenge his psychosis alone, without supervision. Other than that, I kind of liked it. My favorite bit was Fear asking, "You going to eat that?"
OCD and psychosis can be intertwined, in this case the man obviously didn't have psychosis because he was aware that his thoughts and compulsions were irrational.

Do NOT let anyone with debilitating OCD ever see this video....The plot in a nutshell (this is not a spoiler alert): if fear drives your OCD because something bad will happen if you don't do your ritual, that's good. Therapists are wrong, OCD is right. Something bad will happen. Don't live with doubt or hope it won't.... it will. Keep your OCD, it's saving you. According to this film, you will always have to give in to your compulsions or your worst fear will come true, whatever that fear is...
I'm not criticizing this film. This is a really cool horror video and obviously not meant to address OCD in any type of therapeutic sense... But just as I avoid movies about demonic possession because they freak me out, anyone with OCD had better stay the hell away from this video. It will %&^* with their minds. So if you have OCD, go watch something else. The rest of you, enjoy. And be kinder to people who are shackled down with this horrific illness.
I think that you might have missed the point. He was feeding the fear because he thought that if he didn't feed the fear he would be murdered. Ironically, he would NOT have been murdered had he NOT fed the fear, but he DID feed the fear, and it was the fear that DID murder him.

The ending makes the whole film into a pretty cheap trick. It's a choice you can make. But first building up this psychologically interesting development just to trade it for a completely unoriginal horror twist at the end doesn't seem a good one to me.
lol
This film seems to be mocking the real suffering of people with OCD. Terrible ending.
It doesn't mock, it accurately depicts it.
The people who mock it are the ones who claim to have it just because they like things nice and tidy.
This film is educational.
I have OCD and I loved the ending. The people behind this perfectly captured OCD and even though the ending is upsetting, it oddly feels refreshing.
I don't think everyone with OCD will have the same opinion of the film, and that's ok. Sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose. I'm currently on a losing streak after motivating a whole group of people to do much better and while I'm happy for them, I'm disappointed in myself. It isn't just fear that held me up, though. It was complacency, or the paralyzed feeling that comes with over analyzing when you become a perfectionist. Then, imposter syndrome kicks in, and next thing you know, you're rambling at 6am on UA-cam instead of getting sleep and making any semblance of progress towards your goals...
It's a cycle where you win some and you lose some. If I don't follow my systems, I fall apart. My late neuropsychiatrist meant well when telling me to tone down my hyper Vigilance, but I'm an all or nothing person currently. I have a traumatic brain injury and it's hard for me to measure healthy amounts of time. The only thing that makes me function in a way that appears normal on the outside are my insane systems. When those fall apart, I'm no good to anyone. Hence, all the rambling I'm still doing. I'll stop now, I think you get the gist.
Regardless if we agree or disagree, I hope you have a great day.
