- Tropicalia, also known as Tropicália, is a cultural and musical movement that emerged in Brazil in the late 1960s. It combined traditional Brazilian music with avant-garde and international influences, creating a unique fusion that challenged social and political norms. Tropicalia artists, such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Os Mutantes, blended music, visual arts, and poetry to critique the authoritarian regime of the time and celebrate Brazil's diverse culture.

Just a little note that the Os Mutantes record I mention actually came out in 05:19 was actually release in '68 and not '69!
Just a small correction on this great work: the vocalist in Os Mutantes band was not Nara Leão but Rita Lee. She left the band in the early 70s to turn into a multimillion records performer and composer , becoming the undisputed Queen of Brazilian Rock. She died in 2023 at the age of 75 still rockin as an untamed larger that life granny. She was a hero 😊
This is incredible!! Would love to hear you talk about more South American sub-genres
u deserve more views man this is great quality. subbed. thanks for making these
Great stuff. It would be great if you had a listening list in video the description.
Interesting video... not aware of this movement before, so thanks. Regarding suggestions... one of my most sacred musical memories was seeing Mahlathini and the Mohotella Queens live in London around 1988. Would be very interested to see a technical explanation of what gives that very characteristic sound of these musicians and the likes of Bhundu Boys and Four Brothers
Quality stuff dude. Loved this ❤
Nara leo was not mutantes. Was Rita Lee who later left launch her solo carrier.
