    I matriculated through dental school in Illinois and my total debt was only $183,000 and I worked at a health center 4 years and did loan forgiveness to get that down to $83,000 in just 4 years. I have worked at a hospital now for the last 9 years and make enough money to easily make the payments. Don't let the debt overwhelm you; think strategically hiw to get rid of it.

      Did you get any scholarships to bring it down? Because I too live in Illinois and I'm looking to go to UIC for dental school and I believe for all 4 years it's around $250,000. And the loan forgiveness. Was it after 10 years? And what kind? I could really use you help before I go. Thank you so much in advance!!!!

      whitesox2624 hopefully you found your answer, how was pre dentistry? Currently in high school and thinking about doing going to a community college for 2 years first then switching to a 4 year university for the last 2 years to cut the cost a bit. Would really want to know if dentistry is the right path for me since I wasn’t the best student the first 2 years of High school.

      hugo chen up to you man. I wasn’t a good student in high school. I smoked weed and did many stupid activities. I somehow ended up working in a dental office as an assistant which led me to pursue dentistry. I went to community college for 2 years and 2 years to Uni. I paid nothing for college except living expenses. Dental school is expensive but it’s worth it. I would recommend shadowing dental offices and seeing if you like the career

    From a dentist 4 years already in profession: You will change your mind about which profession is easier when you have to work 6 hours for a patients with large tongue and preppearing an upper left second molar through a tiny dental mirror, while your friend/brother the doctor is setting behind a disk referring patients and writing prescriptions

      wow, all the dentists, oral surgeons etc. I know, work far less hours than I do. This all depends on if you own your own practice. I have over 20 years of practice in internal medicine and hospice medicine. I do home visits, nursing homes etc. Although I am only working 60 to 70 hours a week now, when I first started I would routinely work over 100 hours weekly.

      Then why did you choose to become a Dentist? You do want to help people achieve optimal oral health, right? You must get some satisfaction in helping people. i aspire to be a Paediatric Dentist. i think that i would enjoy it. No back breaking of you sit with the proper posture in the proper work chair an go for regular massage. Just saying. Maybe you are depressed and need therapy.

    I took both the MCAT and the DAT and the MCAT was purely a reading comprehension test. You need the science knowledge but you have to read long passages and decipher what info needs to be taken out and be applied to the questions. If you are a slow reader (like I am) you can know all the info but still do poorly. The DAT is more direct. For example, it will ask you questions like, "If you mix chemical A with chemical B, what happens?" You need to know the same info for both exams but the DAT is just more straight forward in testing your knowledge of that info. The DAT does have the perceptual ability section which I feel is very important for a dentist. I was always good at that stuff so I thought it was a fun section but many people have trouble with 3 dimensional thinking and find it difficult. As far as being On Call, dentists are technically ALWAYS on call. However I very rarely ever need to go in to the office. Most of the time you can call in a script or see them the next day. One thing that wasn't touched on in the video is the education you receive in med school vs dental school. The two are almost identical the first two years with the exception of dental specific classes. The third and fourth year you branch off into the med/dental practical training. Great video keep up the good work.

    So let’s be clear. Everything in this video is NOT fact. The comments, for the most part, seem more accurate tbh. As a soon to be doctor (counting the days til 2020!), I find it really interesting that a DDS (current or future idk) would make a video titled “dentists vs. doctors.” Are you not a doctor? Are you not going to be a doctor? We-physicians, pharmacists, dentists alike- are a team, working together to provide the best healthcare possible to the public. Such verbage and some of the inaccurate comments made in the video, instigate a certain hierarchy amongst our fields that should not exist. We are all doctors, we all worked very hard to get to where we got, and we ALL want to help people. That’s it. But don’t get me wrong...some people need help in determining their career path and use such videos to help make that decision. I get it. The truth of the matter is dental school is not a cake walk. You are learning everything about the human body, drugs etc. on top of all this lab work and surgical procedures. That being said pharmacy and medicine is no cake walk either. Salary wise...pharmacists generally make less than a physician/dentist. However, a dentist can make more than a physician and vice versa. There’s a lil bit more autonomy in the field of dentistry but it all depends. There I got it out lol. Hope this helps! Good luck to everyone in all your endeavors!!

      I see what you’re saying. It’s unfortunate that arrogance has to come with certain degrees. But screw that and all the lobbying bs. The truth is, in order to do our job effectively, we have to diagnose medically before we can do anything dentally. And that is a fact

    My first thought on the first sixty seconds of this video: You are not NOT too old for cardio. You just bit off more than you can handle. If you have been doing nothing but sitting and studying for more than a year, you have to ease back into exercising. Try something small like walking for fifteen or twenty minutes at any speed you wish at first. Then try walking fast for twenty minutes as your next goal.

    Bottom line is- do what you love and can see yourself doing 10 years from now. You can watch as many salary/ hours videos as you want, but you need to see these professions in person. If you choose a career based on salary/ hours, you are in for a nice treat. Perhaps the treat of pure hell. My advice to anyone that is watching this video, go and shadow as many doctors and dentists as you can and ask about their day to day job. Remember, a job is at least 1/3 of your life. Yeah, maybe a psychiatrist or family doc works a bit more than a dentist, but it’s all about what motivates you to wake up in the morning.

    I'm hoping to get into dental school one day. I thought about medical school but after researching it and seeing the average work weeks of 60+ hours for doctors I was just "nope, fuck that." I will gladly take more free time as dentist to actually enjoy my money than spend my whole life working.
    I'm not trying to insult doctors at all, got nothing but respect for them, but honestly sounds more like a lifestyle choice than a career and I don't think many people, myself included, couldn't do it.

    I think that one of the reasons that dentists don't get as much respect and admiration is that dentists work on a small area of the body. Some people may have the idea that dentists have it easy because everything they study happens above the shoulder bones [ clavicales ]. However doctors have to study everything from eyebrows to ankles.

    Excellent job of comparison. There is one big difference. A solo dental practitioner is alone with his staff and doesn’t have many opportunities to mingle with peers. The MD on the other hand, gets to go to the hospital to see patients and has more peer contact. There are exceptions. The hours of time spent working is arranged for greatest production. Dentists rarely have a minute in between patients and it is very physically demanding because of prolonged posture and close eye focus. PS - I am a retired dentist.

    • @pimpnamedslickback7780
      @pimpnamedslickback7780 6 років тому +2

      Not only that remember this. Say you're a general dentist who never opens his own practice just for arguments sake and say your max career salary is around 200-250k which is reasonable for someone working for a healthcare company for multiple years as a dentist, physicians that make around that range still need to spend 3-4 years in residency to make that kind of money. So you're 3-4 years ahead salary wise. If you open your own practice and hit it big and you're making serious money 400-600k, the physicians that have to comparable salaries were in residency for 5-7 years and 2-3 years of fellowship

    • @aahsimovieprojects

    • @JasmineCheema92
      @JasmineCheema92 6 років тому

      rsp 123 what's most difficult about doing my internship? Basically having to juggle my schedule between all the departments so that i get my requirements done ASAP. Bear in mind that patients tend to cancel on us. When this happens we have to contact our other patients at the last minute to check if they can com otherwise time is misspent. It's all about utilising time properly and efficiently. Cos where I am, you officially become a doctor once you have checked off all your requirements. I'm not sure how it works in The States or elsewhere. So, the sooner you finish your requirements, the sooner you graduate. The sooner you graduate the sooner you can pay off your student loans and start building your life :)

    Hey Trevor, so I ended up writing both the MCAT and DAT... I found actually the MCAT was a lot easier (except the cars section)... The reason for this was because it was a lot more broader and a lot of the answers could be found in the passage... Whereas the DAT you needed to know very very very specific details... Also i'm comparing the science sections here... But this is my opinion considering I wrote the Canadian DAT and I have no clue about the american... And I do agree with you on the PAT section, it was a lot of fun, and since I wrote the Canadian DAT the soap carving section was very fun too... I can't say anything about the QR section, but RC section was pretty straight forward whereas on the MCAT the CARS section was unbelievable hard... RC in DAT I scored a 22, where as CARS I scored 123, so its a huge difference.... But this my opinion and just wanted share it with you!

    What you do is amazing, your a true hero! I do however understand being self confident about your teeth due to a drug in the chemo family my teeth are destroyed! As a mom of 4 I just can’t afford to get my teeth fixed and even if I could afford a partial denture which I can’t the thought of having a denture at 32 years old is depressing! It’s made me incredibly depressed I’m missing out on precious time with my children because I’m just to embarrassed and ashamed to leave my house and when I do leave my house I’m sick for hours before hand panicking it controls my life! I don’t sleep much because I lay awake thinking about all the fun things I wish I could do with my kids, others may laugh at me but you just can’t possibly understand unless you’ve experienced something similar! If you have healthy teeth and a smile your proud of be thankful! Not all of us are so lucky and many of us can’t afford dental care! I wish I could afford implants I have tried getting financed with no luck! I’ve wrote to dozens on dentists in Michigan with no luck I had luck with several dentists out of state but couldn’t afford to travel!

      In my personal opinion, the biggest question you should ask yourself is whether you are interested in being a business owner. The medical route will more than likely lead you to work as a hospital employee. That takes away the stress of being a boss and everything that comes with it. On the other hand, the dental route is unique in that you have the opportunity to be an entrepreneur and build your practice. There are pros and cons to both and it ultimately depends on what you want from life

    you should only become a dentist if you want to be a dentist. same if you want to be an an MD. Nobody should be applying to both and have DDS as the back up plan. Become man-i can tell people-. being a dentist you have to be a robot all day- calm, steady and work in a tight environment-non stop. Even as a general dentist- can only compare this to a physician who has to be calm and steady all day-ie. some form of medical surgeon. . I have been a dentist for 17 yrs. and have owned multiple offices. What you do after you graduate makes the difference- you can be an entrepreneur being an MD or DDS. You can be rich or poor or half ass dentist or MD. Degree does not mean anything in terms of wealth. The richest dentists I know- have owned and operated big offices having associates for the most part. school and what you do after are way different. Dentistry is a very physically and mentally challenging profession. Being a specialist in either fields-does not necessarily mean more money. It may be more money as you the DR doing all the work as as one man show-often leads to burn out. . Good video. I just don't see a point of someone comparing the 2 professions-do one or the other. what if you hate working with your hands, did not get into MD and then go into DDS. Happened to one of my friends- and after 3rd year- he dropped out of DDS by choice. He entered DDS to please his parents-and of course his parents-who were not either DDS or MDs- wanted him to be one or the other. My advice I will be giving to my kids- only become a dentist if you really want to be one

      bloom Agrawal to practice in the US, international dentists have to apply to an advanced placement program where you take a bench test and boards to get accepted. The advances standing mean you take the last 2 years of American dental school along with some additional classes. Some states then require a General Practice Residency after graduation. If you don’t qualify then you have to do the normal 4 years of dental school.

    I strongly believe that you must be a dentist and a medical doctor to compare and contrast. What you are primarily talking about is getting into med school vs dental school, not the fields themselves.
    Live both lives before sharing info that is misleading, or at least interview some more people. You forget to mention malpractice insurance, insurance billing, and the amount of stress both have, among many many more things.

    You left out a lot of information about physicians. Average salary for primary care physicians was about 200k, but subspecialists make way more. You also have to remember that physicians don't all work in hospitals and can work part time while still making a ton and with a great work life balance. There is locoms tenens that medical professionals can do and make over thirty dollars an hour more than base pay for primary care. Neurosurgeons can make a million a year doing this and work half the month. If you want to be a doctor but you are afraid of the work life balance, don't just go be a dentist because you can work less. Be a doctor and figure out work life balance. Be a dentist if your want to be a dentist. Also, who cares about how much money you make? You should ask want to do your job for free. You become a medical professional you become a servant to your community. If you can't handle that then please do something else. Forget the money.
