  • This video is part of a Collaboration Brewing Series with a fellow BrewTuber, The Beer Junkies. Follow along as I brew his Kolsch recipe on my DIY Electric HERMs System. We are going to see how close I can come to the Kolsch beer that is served at his brewery.
I'm going to walk you through the grain bill, the water profile, and the process use on my electric HERMS (Heat Exchange Re-circulating Mash System) garage brewery system.
In part 2 of this series, we are going to swap beers and compare them to see the differences.
    The Recipe:
    Batch size: 10 gallons
    Malts:
    German Pilsner Malt - 78% / 13 lbs 6.4 oz
    Vienna Malt - 8.1% / 1 lb 8 oz
    Munich Malt - 5.8% / 1 lb
    Carapils/Dextrine Malt - 5.8% / 1 lb
    Rice Hulls - 2.3% / 8 oz
    Hops:
    Northern Brewer (8.5% AA) - 16.5 IBUs at 60 minutes / 1 oz
    Saaz (3.75% AA) - 3.1 IBUs at 30 minutes / 0.55 oz
    Saaz (3.75% AA) - 1.5 IBUs at 5 minutes / 1 oz
    Yeast:
    German Kolsch - WLP029

Thanks for the feedback! I kegged my kolsch last weekend and we plan on shipping the beer to each other this weekend. It should be fun comparing the beers:)

    Great content
Have you done a video on the coils in your Anvil buckets?

Hey Dave, not in great detail yet. I’ll add a coil overview that to the shoot list. Thanks for the feedback!!!

Great videos, thanks for sharing! Your HERMS setup is awesome, it's cool to see someone do that with Anvil stuff. I had an Anvil kettle and was amazed by the quality. Question: what did you use to create the stainless hook that you put in the hole in your lid for recirculating? Also, do you have a link to the strainer you bought that fits the Anvil kettles? Thanks!

Hey Adam, thanks for the feedback! Yeah, the Anvil equipment is pretty darn good. Not as good as the Blichmann kettles, but really nice. I didn’t make that hook, it’s just the return pipe from my Anvil Foundry system. I fits perfectly in the Anvil kettle lid hole and works great. I always wondered if the lid was designed for this return hook. I can’t remember off hand where I bought that strainer. It might have been an Amazon purchase. It does a good job, but I do plan on replacing it with a sprayer nozzle or maybe the SS brew tech recirculating manifold next year: www.ssbrewtech.com/products/re-circulation-manifold-for-infussion-mash-tuns?variant=7904579717. Cheers!

Here it is:www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005V2S4S2?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title . IMO, for a couple extra bucks, I’d go for the ss brewtech manifold.
