One of the most valuable skills in painting is being able to visualize the color wheel and the fundamental relationships between various colors.
    COLOR MAP
The color wheel is like a map for color theory that you can use to travel anywhere you want across the rainbow.
WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM THE COLOR WHEEL:
    WHAT IS IN THE MIXTURE
It tells you what goes into individual mixtures. For example if you would like to mix orange, you can find that on the color wheel and backtrack to see that it comes from the blending of yellow and red.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ADD TO THE MIXTURE
In a similar way, if you’re curious about what will happen if you add a particular color to your mixture, you can find that out as well. If you have orange and add red to it, you end up with red orange.
    COLOR RELATIONSHIPS
The color wheel also tells you about the relationship of various colors.
    COMPLEMENTS
ONe of the most important relationships to be aware of is complementary colors. These are colors from opposing sides of the wheel, and they’re generally going to neutralize each other when mixed together. If we take orange, we can see that mixing it with blue will end up with a gray color.
    COLOR SCHEMES
The color wheel can also be used as a guide when creating color schemes. For example, if I am planning a painting with lots of orange, I could reference the color wheel and see what color schemes might work well with that.
    COMPLEMENTARY
On the opposite side of orange I will find the complementary color scheme which emphasizes the contrast between the two complementary colors. I would argue this is the most important to be aware of.
    TRIADIC
I could use the two colors equidistant from orange to get a triadic color scheme.
    ANALOGOUS
I could also choose colors that are next to orange if I wanted an analogous color scheme, which would result in a very warm feeling.
    CONCLUSION
The color wheel is like a map that tells you which direction to go when mixing in order to create particular results.
