  • British observers cite obstacles in Su-57 Felon manufacturing.
According to The Telegraph, Russia is grappling with significant hurdles in producing its cutting-edge Su-57 combat aircraft. These challenges are exacerbated by Western sanctions, which largely restrict access to crucial electronic components, such as the German MPPU-50 communications modules. While these components aren’t entirely beyond reach, acquiring them often necessitates reliance on unlawful channels and intermediaries. This not only inflates the costs but also introduces uncertainties in delivery schedules, complicating strategic planning for aviation production.
The Telegraph, citing sources including the Ukrainian think tank Frontelligence Insight, suggests that these sanctions could exert prolonged pressure on Russia’s aviation industry, even as Moscow asserts it is working to ramp up Su-57 production.
Russia currently lacks a homegrown counterpart for the German MPPU-50 communication modules required in Su-57 production. Despite endeavors to develop homegrown technology, Western sanctions have severely hindered access to top-quality electronic components, particularly in microelectronics and communications technology sectors.
Russia is actively working to replace foreign technologies with homegrown innovations, as part of its import substitution initiative. Despite the drive, progress is notably slow, facing significant challenges. When local prototypes do emerge, they often struggle to match the quality and reliability of Western components, such as Germany’s MPPU-50.
