I didn’t realize just how impressive Jackie Chan’s physical skill and agility was until a watched a couple motivational vids with clips from his films, and saw Drunken Master. The dude is incredible.
Yeah. Agreed. And apparently he does all his stunts. (Or at least, he USED to until this modern day came where he had to use cables and perhaps even SOME stuntman instead of him. Although, he *was* TRAINED to be a STUNTMAN too, right?)
@@Knatterbart he was basically sold as a child to the Opera Pekking school. The schedule was 5am to 7am stretch. 7am to noon acrobatics. YES, someone finally mentions some of his earlier work. I'm a fan of the old kung fu movies, and not many if at all anybody knows about his earlier movies. I had to explain to several people that the "Drunken Master" movie we know of here in the west is sequel.
@@TheBioneer I bought a box set of random old kung fu movies from like a discount store and it had ten fingers of death on on of the DVDs. after that I had to find more of his early work

Man this is one of the best channels in all of UA-cam ! Can't believe you still don't have 1 million subscribers or more ! Keep up the good work, this channel inspired me to look at my trainnings from a different perspective !
With Martial arts, you need to be fit to last in a fight. Knowing all the techniques won't matter if you get winded in 10 seconds. This is probably why Bruce Lee began training hardcore after his fight with Wong Jack Man, he got winded in a 3 minute fight and realized his Wing Chun wasn't the end all of martial arts. So Jackie Chan *is* a martial artist, there's no doubt about it.
I had a Snake In Eagle's Shadow poster in my bedroom growing up. I also met JC once at a charity event in Toronto Canada. My kung fu teacher at the time had a script for a movie and wanted me to give it to him... I forgot if I did or not. I think i did. But nothing ever came of it. LOL
I love this video! my only complaint is that it shoulda been 3 times longer! I read "I am Jackie Chan" a couple of years ago and was absolutely shocked at what he endured as a child yet the book was dedicated to his former master at the Chinese opera. truly an amazing life he has lead!
You should ask him for an interview. I only know him vaguely from recent films (see very little movies or tv myself), but instantly became a fan when I realized out how old he is. You could probably count on your fingers the number of 30 year old's that can move like that.
@@TheBioneer Best surfer on the beach isn't always the most athletically gifted, it's more likely the one who sees the perfect swell is first to shout "my wave!". Nothing to lose by asking. In the humble opinion of some random dude in the comments section, I think he would be more likely to take you up on it than some well known Hollywood reporter.
I'm not sure if anybody else has mentioned this and I know it's a year old but people come to old videos all the time. With the clocktower stunt Jackie couldn't will himself to let go, so he asked the camera crew to leave the film running and leave him until his grip let go naturally. After that he reviewed the footage. Jackie apparently wasn't happy with the recording and did it no less than 2. More. Times.
around @7:50 you mention that jackie is more watchable in a difficult to describe way. For me. Its the stakes and the pacing. A lot of his fights are little thrillers on their own. We watch a man creatively use his environment to even the odds against overwhelming force. He's almost ALWAYS out matched and takes some brutal beatings only to barely make it out and survive in some creative way. And this stands true even outside whatver the story is. You get this same feeling/emotion from watching his choreography without context. Tony Ja's fights are just a bunch of really impressive feats. Bruce Lee is an unstoppable tank 90 percent of the time. THAT is what makes Jackie more watchable to me. By a long shot. and i wont even get into how far back and static the camera is. With very little cutting so you can see each every move.
Yeah that’s definitely a part of it! The static camera is massive for me, but only works if you have the moves to back it up. I also like how not every other move is a flip. He drip feeds the awesome stuff which makes it more impactful when it happens. Whatever the case, he is pure class!
Great video. I'm likewise a lifelong fan of Jackie Chan and his work. No one can fail to be impressed by Jackie's work and life ethic. Indeed, the reason he has never thought in a ring is that he says time and time again that he hates violence. Ironic, perhaps, but then this is why he has turned his fighting on the screen into comedy. And finally, someone that has said his martial arts are genuine! At the end of the day, any one who trained/trains as many hours as Jackie Chan in fighting, and all the styles he studied, could be bad at fighting or a 'fake martial artist' as too many claim regarding Jackie. Fighting is after all just about repetition of skills, and he's done far more of that than most, in far more styles than most. True fighting mastery, as the Shaolin monks know, comes from the months and years of dedication to repetition of the same basics. And you only have to watch the dude to see how much he has repeated movements. This is the only way to make skills like he performs look as easy as they do when he does them. His rhythm is also a key component of fighting, and he has this in spades. As Mas Oyama used to ask potential students before taking them on, 'can you dance?' or 'have you got rhythm?' because this is so key to fighting. Utmost respect to Jackie.
