Thank God for people like you that take time out of their day to help others! Fixed my backup camera thanks to this video. Would’ve never been possible if it wasn’t for your walkthrough! Appreciate you!
Bro. You’re the man. Was able to get my camera working again. Saved me big time as I was thinking I needed to replace the camera unit. Sure enough I got in there and my wires were split. Can’t thank you enough for posting this.
Just want to thank you. My 2015 Audi S3 rear camera went out at 87K miles and your video showed me exactly where the issue might be and I was able to find the wire break and fix it. Like new again!
Thank you, just repaired mine. Only issue,. All 3 wires were separated. The main black wire has 3 to 4 "hair" sized wires inside surrounded by a silver mesh coating. It was almost impossible to get inside the core to the wires, then reconnect them. It was like connecting hair strands. Again, great walk through.
@@kyleauerbach Yes, it was very very difficult when they are all apart. I was able to carefully pull back the cover on the center wire as it's only a few strands. You will need a razor blade, very sharp to carefully cut, peel back the center wire cover. Then just tape them together with electrical tape. You need lots of play in the wires so disconnect them where they are attached to the trunk lid. Hope this helps.
YOU THE MAN! Thought this was gonna end up being major $$$ at the shop to fix, followed along with your video and fixed the problem (split wires) in under an hour!
Thanks a lot bud! The same exact issue in the same spot. Two wires were split. Took me like an hour and a half to fix it, and saved me an expensive trip to the dealership. Cheers!!
You’re a life saver. Camera stopped working this morning and I started to wonder why. Your video was the solution. Both my grey wires were severed. Thank you!
Wallet saving video!! Was about to purchased a new camera system (per recommendation of an Audi mechanic) and then I bumped with this video! Mine has both red and brown wires cut and were easily seen at first sight in the part that the cables always bends when opening/closing the trunk. Easy fix thanks to this video! Thanks man!!
Thanks a ton buddy!! Your video helped me fix the camera issue which otherwise could have cost me hundreds of dollars to fix at the dealership. Highly appreciated.
Man Thank You for this video. I have and Audi A3 2016 and I followed everything you said and yes one of the wires was broke in half. I fix it and the camera work as new. Thank You so much. I save 1k in labor and the whole new kit.
@@richardgrant488 mine was definitely triple square but it's probably possible that yours could be a Torx or a different size if it's a different year or different Market
Hey Chris, thank you very much. I had no idea why the camera stopped until I came across your video. This showed me everything I needed to get the job done myself. Appreciate guys like you that help us out. Cheers
Thanks for the nice triaging video. My A3 had a cut in one of the grey brown wires exactly at the same place as you have shown in the video. Seems like a design flaw in the car.
Just wanted to say thank you for making this video because it expedited the diagnostic process after I verified there wasn’t any power at the camera I went right to the spot and found two wires broken. I went and checked the driver side and found more broken wires And wires that were going to break… Currently looking into the cost of the rear harness.
Hey Chris, just want to say thanks for video. Had same issue with my A3 and found the cut wire just in time.. lucky it didnt cut all the way through the coax cable as well! Found crimped in exact same spot, bad design :(
Thanks for this, been trying to find the video cable for about week. Watched your video stripped everything out and found a broken wire just like yours. Spliced in a new wire and all working again. Thanks for your help 👍 🙂
Luckily my wife speaks Spanish so I had her translate this for me :-) I'm glad you were able to get it going and I hope you're able to return your camera
Same problem with our 2015 A3 rear view camera - both small wires severed and coax going bad. Clearly a design flaw and maybe a materials flaw too - pretty disappointing and disconcerting. We also had a similar problem a month ago on the other side which caused the two left-side tail lights in the trunk door to stop working (included a warning on the dash). After swapping bulbs didn't help, we brought it to the dealer - they wanted $1400 to fix it after opening it up and diagnosing the exact issue. No idea why they wanted so much since they knew the exact problem at that point, and they confirmed they would only do a repair, not replace anything. We paid the $200 diagnostic fee and I fixed it myself, saving over $1000.
Those two things shouldn't be related but I would disconnect the battery and reconnect and see if it works if not your next step would be to scan the car with vcds or obd11 Etc
Thank you Chris. Was reluctant until i saw it in my case too. OMG... exact same location. In my case all 3 wires had chopped off over a period of time. Really bad design. Any suggestions on how to fix them back ? especially the coax is the challenge. Tested it by slowly ripping off the plastic cover and connecting the wires, and it works. Now i have to connect them properly. Anyways, this video saved me $$$$ !!!...thank you !
All 3 wires were bad on mine. The black wire doesn’t seem to be able to be spliced. I’ll strip it but there’s multiple layers and the copper core is on a few strands and I can’t get a connection
Aweosme video! I need to do this for my son. Question. Will this also fix his sensors? Are they all connected to that ground? He did say that he closed the trunk hard a few weeks back then his rear camera went. lol tks!
Nevermind. If you try to disconnect the battery in hopes that it will fix your camera. Don't bother. :) Only way to fix it is by fixing the wires per the video. Will fix this weekend.
How did you know you had an issue? No screen, black screen, infared looking screen? Mine just went out yesterday. I had the hatch open, and decided to back up in my driveway, could see my roof, only moved 4 feet, then back up camera went black. Lots of sun here in Orlando, and had the trunk hatch open for 5-6 hours. I've checked the fuse, and it has continuity, so now I'm wondering if this is my issue too? Thanks for a reply👍🏼great video. ( Mine is inder warranty, but such a hastle to goto dealer)
@@96ej luckily on mine, the cable was just loose on the back of the head unit(stereo), behind the glove box. (8 7/10mm bolts removed to gently drop it down, bc you NEVER want to disconnect the knee air bag plug, lol, and then 2 more bolts for the radio/brain. Thanks for replying
I had to have the cables for my tail lights repaired. They are on the other side and today my camera stopped working. I think it will be the same issue
You're 100% correct it's the same core issue for both the wiring gets fatigued from using the trunk and the camera or the lights fail. It's a good little car but it's definitely not perfect
Great video! Quick question- how do I remove that black plastic panel in the middle that you took out after the foam? Seems like it just popped out for you but it’s not doing that for me. Thank you!
Thank you, it's been awhile since I've done this but I believe it was held in by two for four spring clips. To release you just need to pull up while squeezing the piece. Also once you have all the phones out look at the bottom and make sure there's no torque screws or anything holding it down in the bottom
@@96ej I didn’t find any clips to squeeze but I did manage to pull it out with brute force (unfortunately breaking off one of the four clips underneath in the process, but that’s not a huge deal). Thank you!
I wish I had seen this video about a month ago! I ended up buying an aftermarket backup camera for my car. Did you get a black flickering screen for the backup camera before the fix?
Yes! At first it would flicker when putting it in reverse or it would work perfectly one day and then not at all in the next. Then it quit working all together, when they went ahead my trunk opened I noticed the screen was working and that's when I knew it was a broken wire
I am having the same issue but not with camera but with the inner led taillight, passanger side. Do you know which one of these wires is for the inner LED?
There are a few wires going to each inner tail light, you'll need to pull off the inner trunk liner and follow them back until you find the problem. The inner trunk liner is pretty easy to remove there's one Phillips head screw and a bunch of clips
I have no experience with the A3 hatchback but I can say from past Volkswagen Audi cars that I've owned and been into usually you just pop off the rear hatch covers and all the wiring is usually right there. If it's further Upstream take out the D pillar covers and that should allow you to drop the headliner just a little bit enough to be able to work on it
Probably too much, if you do go get a quote from the dealer will you come back and post it here. This what are we cost me less than 30 cents, if I didn't have tools it would have been less than $30
