- It seems Extended Reality or XR is going to be the high tech that will make us feel like we are living in the future. XR encompasses a conglomeration of VR - virtual reality, AR - Augmented Reality and MR - mixed reality. Qualcomm the tech giant that produces chips powering some popular VR headsets such as the oculus quest, has made a huge announcement. They will start collaborating with at least 15 leading global mobile operators to deliver XR viewers. There are many mixed reality headsets that exist today, however most of them are meant for developers thus the price is enormous. Such as Hololens 2 with a staggering $3,500. But many companies focusing in the development of AR, VR, MR and now XR are beginning to pay attention to the consumer market. The nreal light MR glasses are such an example. In the near future we will see more XR devices coming to live that will transform our day to day life and will eventually replace smartphones. The future with these many XR devices in a post-smartphone world does look very bright.

This made me think about an M.R or something system that can interact with devices that you can adjust like air conditioners by just selecting it on your M.R system and just adjusting it's temp dialor something through just hand gestures

I know, as an XR designer I cringe whenever someone has magic telekinesis with no EEG on :S

i dont want to sound like i know the future but i wasnt getting a vr ar or mr headset because i was exactly waiting for this! i knew it was coming... from a hardware point these all have the same needs... its basically just sofware related.... its just a matter of time until these glasses can do all of it... i think all of them will focus on getting XR right... cant wait until they really manage to find a proper way to transfer smells :D

I don't really see the difference between MR and XR. To me, it seems MR = XR: there's an excessive or redundant step up to what's called XR since MR is comprised of aspects from VR and AR. So the question is, what separates it from XR?
Need more Realities
If anyone is looking for a good film/movie that talks about this issue, I'd recommend you watch "Surrogates" - (2009). Basically you have a bunch of imperfect humans (yes that includes both me and you) who are piloting their own individual drone (and a "Drone" in this context is a "perfect" robotic body) in a virtual reality world. Now while living a virtual life as a "perfect" person (e.g., no aging, no mental health issues, no insecurities, etc.) might seem cool and all, it all comes to an end whenever the headset is removed, thus you are back in the real world and in that movie you'll see that this "perfect virtual" world has only made things worse for society. At the end of the film there is no more virtual world and you'll see a bunch of imperfect humans interacting with one another! I think that technology (mainly Social Media) may have had "good intentions" in the beginning, but I think it has only made things worse for our society and the only solution to this is to "go back in time" and becoming less reliant/addicted to social media and technology!

MR is blending virtual and real, AR is just adding information onto real life. Iron man holograms are AR while ready player one stuff is VR/MR.

As nice as this will be, wouldn't this primarily be in just Urban communities? I ask this because most Rural communities lack the bandwidth and latency speed that will be required technology like this even remotely decently.

@@cybercoltz9054 It's just the business model getting in the way, see Huawei VR Glass for a compact pair of VR glasses. The main challenge is that super thin VR has to use AR optics. So it's not easy at all.
