    ───────────────
Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

Great video. I've been sealing inmate property bags for 26 years and have never seen this maintenance done before.

Thanks for the lesson. When I first got my FD, it must've taken me 15 minutes to figure out that the plastic piece on the sealer was to hold it in place. I ALMOST cut it off! Well, later, my son-in-law DID cut it off, not realizing what it was for. But I had a fix, I got a roll of stick-on Velcro and stuck a long piece to the other half and simply wrapped it around the heat sealer and that keeps it close. : )

Our sealer arrived with the plastic so bent on one side that it wouldn't work. The one in the video is one I designed and 3D printed as a replacement; it has worked great. The Velcro would be great, you would always know where it is.

I've just purchased a Harvest Right and the impulse sealer included is burning my mylar bags. I now have lowered the temp to about a 5 but I worry it isn't sealing properly. Any ideas why it's burning my bags and sticking to the pad?

I've had a few people comment about having their bags stick, but I haven't been able to make ours stick. I just went and checked my sealer and my sister's sealer, again. With the Mylar bags we have, I couldn't make it stick to the sealer even when I put them up at the highest setting and heated it 3 times in quick succession, making the middle layer of plastic start to ooze out of the ends. The end bits, where it oozed, did try to stick a bit, but not much. I'd sure like to figure this out. What bags are you using?
All I can think of is that either 1) your bags are different than mine on the outside layer, 2) that the tape covering your heat strip is different, or 3) a combination of both. If I use a non metallized bag, like a FoodSaver bag, then it will stick a little on my sealer.

Where would you get a heat strip?

I'm sorry, I just don't know where to get them right now. I keep checking Amazon and Ebay and I'm just not seeing the 5mm replacement stripes currently. (Perhaps others have and they'll let us know?)
The replacement parts I used came with my Impak brand one when I bought it, so I've never had to buy any separately, they came with my sealers. www.impakcorporation.com/sealers/IPK-305H (but the replacement kit cost half the price of the whole machine!?)
The heat strips on mine are about 13 5/8" from center of hole to center of hole and the element is spot welded to the ends. The ones I see on Amazon seem to be crimped and I am not sure how they are measuring them. www.amazon.com/Impulse-Sealer-LinsnField-Including-13-4inch/dp/B08N9M6FMK (it's not showing the 12" one right now - out of stock. I'll have to wait to try one, or hopefully, someone else has tried them and will let us know. I did cut down an 8mm one to 5 mm, but I haven't tried it yet.

I’m fairly curious as to how you would diagnose it when you change the heating element and the tape and it’s still not sealing. Do you have any way of diagnosing what the issue is there?

    • @SchoolReports

Does it get hot at all?

    • @believingintheblood8540

@@SchoolReports nope. The light comes on in a clicks it acts like everything’s working, but it doesn’t get hot at all.

@@believingintheblood8540 I'll have to look more later, with a meter. The click is the mechanical switch; I think we can disregard that for now because the light comes on, so you know the fuse is not blown. I don't know wiring diagrams. (maybe some else does) Could the heater transformer be bad or disconnected and still get a light? Seems like it to me.

@@believingintheblood8540 Well, unfortunately, I can now tell you that the circuit for the light can still work even if the parts that heat are non functioning. I did some testing after I accidentally knocked mine off the cart today and broke it a bit. Mine is broken differently than yours; mine doesn't turn off until I lift the seal arm. It just keeps heating; I'll have to count to 3 and release. I may have damaged the relay.
