  • Before Quake Champions but after Quake III Arena, there was Quake Live (2010). As the successor to Quake 3, Quake Live was free to play with ads before Quake Live's Steam release, and in this video, I look at Quake Live in 2021. This is the final part of my Quake Series Review, with Quake Live: The New Online Era of Id Software. #Quake #QuakeLive #IdSoftware

@@LaRavachole I'm '85 myself, but couldn't get Quake before '00 or '01 when we combined our money with my brother and got a computer with Riva TNT 2.
And even then it wasn't a retail copy of the game but on some cd-r with some interesting way to pack it.
First you had like a zip file with 16 parts which had the game paked in ARJ. You'd unzip the files and then you'd need to go command prompt and use command-line ARJ to unpack the game. :D
If there was something to do after that, I can't remember.
And my version didn't have the soundtrack so I've never experienced it fully as it should've been experienced. Instead I blasted my brother's Nine lives by Aerosmith while playing.
I also found Gooseman's Navy Seals mod for it (along with some others) and played the shit out of it. The version I initially had had even a hilarious bug where the reload animation of the pistol was super slow motion. :D I initially thought there was something wrong with my game / hardware.
After watching this review series I'm so tempted to get Quake for reals this time and finally experience it as it was intended.
And after that get the Navy Seals mod and relive the past. :)

There is nothing more satisfying then learning to roller skate with Slash in Quake Champions. The mechanics are the best in the game, the satisfaction is enormous when you can learn such a thing and it is quite the opposite for a newb that never ever played a fps like UT, DOOM ,QUAKE, ^(series) HALF LIFE, so on..... not kid friendly that runs around rampaging thinking they are a god in game. QC isn't popular because the AFPS genre isn't popular - not because it itself is bad. Changes to the original Quake formula that were made in it were just an attempt to spring some life into the aging AFPS scene. And by my estimation, they weren't even close to being horrible. The problem was that they alienated some of the retrogrades that were playing since QW, Q2, and Q3A who due to age-related lack of neuroplasticity adopted a mantra: "new=bad". The rhetoric they pushed on forums infected some of the newcomers and created a toxic atmosphere around the community, which (bugs and performance issues aside) wasn't entirely fair in my opinion. And on top of that, another problem was that most of the old-timers were still playing it, while simultaneously smearing it with shit, and having 20+ years of edge on any neophyte just pushed what chance for success QC had even further away by way of merciless slaughter. Now that the dust has settled, 3 years in - I'm still considering it one of the most complex and engaging AFPS's out there. Most bugs are fixed and the balance is settled, the player base is slowly creeping up (at least in CIS and EU). Nowadays I rarely have to wait more than 30 seconds for a duel. And QPL streams are one of the best cybersport events, period...
If you never played it before and like AFPS genre and Quake in general - give it a try, if you did around 1,5 - 2 years ago and were disappointed - I would consider giving it another shot. Past that, it's just a matter of taste - not some objective defect of the game itself.

Oh nooooo I don't think anyone in the Q3 community was really mad at your video. We'll just take any opportunity we can to say "NOOOO THE GAME ISN'T DEAD. WE STILL PLAY IT. COME PLAAAYYYY." lol.
Great video my dude, Quake Live is one of my favorite games ever made. It was actually one of the first multiplayer shooters I ever played when I was around 12 and it was still a f2p browser game. I've been playing on and off for around 7 years now and I'd say I learned how to at least hold my own and the basic game feel around half a year in, and from there it became a bit of an addiction. So it just goes to show it's not an impenetrable game for those who aren't veterans of the series. I still like Quake Champions a lot and I even like the hero shooter mechanics because they allow for so many different playstyles from fans across many of the different games, but Quake Live is just so easy to pick up and play that it's kept me coming back for years.
Fun Fact : Quake Live actually uses Quake 3 as a base and it's essentially a repackage of Quake 3, but it obviously modernizes a lot of the UI and tech to work on modern systems, balances the weaponry out, and adds a ton of new content from original maps and modes by id Software, to popular Quake 3 mods and community made maps, to it, so you could make the argument that Quake Live is essentially the best way to play Quake 3 nowadays.

Their names are also written in a way to make them look like real players. However when you look at their gameplay in spectator mode you quickly realize it is bots and not humans.
Extremely sad. Literally should rather just leave the servers empty than doing this bot thing and even worse this covered-up bot thing.
That being said the mods CPMA and OSP still has some servers with real players on them but I'm talking about like 5-10 players in a bunch of 1v1 servers in CPMA here. Year 2000 until about 2004/5 I played quake 3 religiously. Rocket arena 3 matches and top tier duellers were like poetry. The community was large and sometimes it was difficult to get on your favourite late night server. In your down time you would study matches, duels and trick demos that you had to watch inside the game itself, practicing fluid movement on your own in lan servers. Being good at quake didn't lend itself to playing other games. You either played quake or you died a lot (usually in the first few kills of every match). That unfortunately built quite an elitist bunch. As well as being the game that changed/started arena shooters, it also started the salty chat and looking down on anybody who couldn't keep up. Skip ahead 15 years and I still jump in to a quake live server every so often. To this day, people just talk bullshit and look down on anybody who isn't driving a match towards a win. It's a shame but quake will never ever reignite like it did. Times change. Noobs aren't welcomed.

With QC still technically an Early Access game what i think they ought to do is port all of its maps to idTech 6, add a full campaign, add proper servers, go full release. Also have an optional skill cap of some sort avaliable for servers so new players don't get scared away. Mapping tools like QL has would also be a big plus. And option to turn off active, passive, or all abilities for servers too. This would make about everyone happy, but idk if Bethesda would give it the OK. The Single Player campaign would need to be DOOM 2016 tier amazing to bring in new players to give the MP a try.

I'm an old school quake player and I play regularly quake live. Servers are full of people and we have active free for all, clan arena, freeze tag and capture the flag servers. Let me put it this way. IF you loved quake 3 arena this is it. This is the better version of quake 3 arena with 50 more maps probably, some of them a lot better than a lot of the quake 3 arena maps. Its 10$ on steam but its worth buying. Most of the quake community play quake live so whenever you log in there always will be servers with people to play against. And that's the most important thing on quake to play against other people, i'm only sad that Unreal Tournament community didn't had a similar game like this one.

Q3 servers ages ago also didn't have servers listed in the server browser. The games were all done through say IRC and forums and private servers, as well as using various mods like OSP tournaments and Rocket Arena. Or combos. It was also quite the nightmare to play online at the time, because as a new player you would be completely annihilated by people who played all the time. There was very little room for casual players, you had to be either all in or not in at all.

However I do feel that you've missed quake as a game entirely and you're trying to retrospectively analyze it. Pro players aside, but the my part of the community had a hard time accepting Q3. The significantly reduced number of skill moves (double jumps, long jumps, ledge jumps) made the game seem noobish at the time. It took time to adjust to what Q3 had to offer as challenge and game mechanics. I am saying this to counter you saying that Q3 had the most significant impact and Q2 had identity crisis. For me Q2 was the foundation of modern FPS. Poor storyline and everything ... but it's like ID already felt that they don't need this anymore .... it just had to be there as ppl expected it. Muliplayer and mechanics were the focus of the game and oh my .. what a game

    well, a few corrections:
    1. QC is not the most modern interpretation of the Quake game style - there's Diabotial which might not be as fancy graphics wise. It doesn't atempt to be though since for this kind of gamestyle simplicity is key! However it does a number of core features inherently better than QC like in game pickups for example - much more comfortable to get matches that way! Or that you can take part in warmup matches while queuing up for a regular match!
On top of that it has the most flexible options menu out there to set the game up just as individual as it can be!
    2. It's not hard to get games in QC. There are still enough players active to get matches every day! Might be dependent on the time of the day though..
    3. the fundamental experience with QC does actually please quite a lot of people - what's so annoying about the game is the terribly stiff design regarding some of the basic features like matchmaking or even the lack of an in game vod reviewer!
The lack of mod support is the final nail to the coffin imho since it prevents the people who would actually care for the community and want to contribute to it from doing so.. The playerbase is bound to the same few maps without any possibility to expand on the game what so ever..! That's basically a _huge_ "fuck you" from bethesda to the fans of the series..
That's about my take on the game..

@@shadowknight5964 No worries, man. The game shines it's utmost in the classical gametypes; duel, TDM, CTF and FFA, each with vastly different meta.
The reason behind this is that (contrary to the popular belief) high-skill Quake is INCREDIBLY deep mental stuff, the superfast fragging and the fluid, eye-pleasing movement are just the "trimmings", they became so ingrained with time, that they don't require actual effort, if you know what I mean.
For example: I was totally exhausted (mentally) after a few serious TDM league matches, constantly timing all those item, weapon and power up pickups to the second (you see, in pro-TDM rule set, even weapons have a 30 sec respawn time, so controlling them is crucial) , while forging ever-changing tactics trying to prevent and counter enemy maneuvers (and they are not just potatoes, but doing the same shit as we do), managing resources, communicating with team mates and doing the actual fragging with fast and precise movement at the same time, but after all this, I still could pubstomp for hours and hours on FFA servers, because the skill gap was so huge compared to the average player, that it didn't really matter that I became a braindead zombie a few hours prior, the muscle memory and the experience gained by thousands of hours of playing was more than enough to win, I didn't have to be "mentally present".
When the other top tier FFA players arrived to the said servers, this carefree attitude changed instantly ofc, and had to be concentrated again on timing, area control and item cycling to be able to successfully push for the win.
      /rant off : D

Actually, the fact that this is Rage we are talking about is a pretty decent excuse.
As for Quake Champions - the MM is what made me bounce off this game. I always had most fun when playing 4player matches or duels. But when the game is constantly trying to cram 8 players on a tiny map... It creates a mess of a play. I don't find a daisy chain of killing someone and being killed by another guy behind me who gets killed by another one behind him all that fun.
Or having fun with specific group of people only to be separated, because MM said so. For some reason, modern matchmaking just doesn't work for me with a game like this.

Lots of long time pros like Rapha have expressed how much they enjoy the state of Quake Champions duel right now and like the champion system, and there a lot more people playing Casual TDM/DM/CA matchmaking in QC vs active players in servers in QL. Also for someone like yourself who is newer but interested in AFPS/Quake, i find that the player skill level is a little less daunting in QC, as the regulars in QL seem to have a lot more seniority/experience and leaves a huge skill gap for new Quakers (QC still has a big skill gap to conquer for new Quakers as well). After playing QC for a year and finding it more or less fun, I decided to buy QL out from nostalgia and I can without a doubt say that QL is way more fun than QC, faster, more balanced, more map variety and a much better net code. I'm glad that in Europe thare are still enough active players to find a game without a struggle. Quake Champions has its issues (like the engine it runs on and the lack of continuous/open lobbies), but to say "no one plays it" or whatever is asinine. I don't know if you only select the servers in your area or if you venture out into other regions, but NA/Euro are always busy. That's not even counting the Quake Pro League every single week and the many side communities running tournaments and PUGs (pickup games) off of discord. I know you're not an advanced player or anything (your movement in the videos gives it away), but it's important to do extensive research on these things before making the type of of videos your channel has.
I do like the content, especially since you're going back in time and looking and some of my favorite titles (which usually were id's games). If you ever feel adventurous, the classic Doom 2 community is alive and well too. And yes, I mean multiplayer client/server, not just the thriving mapping/single player scene. There are competitive leagues (mostly CTF) across different multiplayer source ports and all.

Well, here in EU, this game got "privatized" since each server has its own "Mafia" on it: you can't join if you're under a certain ELO (so new players just won't have the possibility to join most matches), new players get kicked out from the matches and don't have time to even learn the basics of the game, when you join certain servers you have to belong to some Discord server in order to play and even pre-order a match on there (just wtf lmao), many players on there cheat or use the game to try their cheats since game itself has no more support from its developers and consequentially nobody's gonna get banned for that, there are like a hundred of different maps on there and people have joy in playing the same 3 maps over and over again, still there's a toxic community calling every new-comer "g4y" "m1dg3t" "f4gg3t" "n1gg3r" or anything related with it, so first thoughts of new players obviously are: "Where in the Hell have I ensnared here? Do they even know this is just a game tho? lol"
The only Quake I still feel "positively" active is obviously Champions, since there's no private servers on there; though, community has to improve their behaving, because new-comers do not leave for the "hard-learning-curve" bullshit, but in 90% of the cases for the community behaving, which is sensless and stupid in front of those poor guys. I mean, Doom Eternal also was hard as hell, but damn dude, everybody managed got to get 'till the end of the game, even though they have died like thousands of times or more; maybe this would be a complete sensless and discordant point to you, but everytime I've invited a friend of mine to get on there in the past 2 years, they've always left the game for the same reasons written above and on Steam either, so here's the truth spoken fellas.

From what I understand, the dislikes towards the game comes from the devs streamlining the matchmaking system and the business model but this was kind of unavoidable in todays industry, sadly. There are slightly differences between Q3 and QL. QL has the heavy machine gun. Q3 does not. The railgun does 100 dmg in Q3. In QL only 80. These two just as an example. There are more differences

I was a huge Quake 3 fan. Lots of fun hours playing and watching tournaments with players like Fatal1ty.
Would like to play Q3 on my Xbox One X if possible.
    I don't have a gaming PC anymore

Quake Live was a great game in the late 2000s, but was too populated with asshats and abusers that ran a huge % of the gamers to other games. Once upon a time the biggest discipline on QL BY MILES was Capture the Flag, as was seen a few times in the video above. Abusers totally destroyed that discipline to where it was a totally dead game on QL by 2015. Then it was just purely Clan Arena that was left.......
The admin for QL tried to keep them separated from the noobs by establishing tier restrictions based on kill % and match win %, but then players - we're talking about players that used to play Quake III and Quake Arena and started on QL as very experienced - just started creating alt accounts whenever their main accts got too good and was moved up out of the noobs' tier levels.
People might say at first, "well, why would experienced players want to beat up on noobs all game long anyways?", but truth was, those abusers actually lived to do that. Quake is a game that is VERY time and experience-intensive. Learning how to move, how to use weapons, how to exploit maps for advantage doesn't take place in a few days or weeks. It takes months just to get moderately decent, and so new users who weren't experienced to the game never got to learn how to play Quake Live due to the asshat abusers running them off. Eventually, it killed Quake Live to where - while there's still good activity to be found on the servers - it's just a shell of what it once was.....

      It's a competitive game.
What you call "abusers" are just people good at it.
On Q3A you could host a private server and play with friends, or you could play with bots and getting better, but you can't blame who's good at it.
When people want to play something easy and get 50% winrate, they can play MTG Arena.

Got a question for you though: you seem to be into QL quite a bit. Do you know of any discord channels or something of that kind where players organize themselves to start pickups and stuff? Been looking for something like that for a while but haven't found any yet. According to you apparently there is still a decent playerbase for the game though

Part of the reason you ran into so much flak with regards to Q3a is you used the in-game browser to find a server, and that never worked well even once back in the day. Vanilla q3 wasn't that popular and you needed to hook up a mod and some third party launcher like All-Seeing Eye or Gamespy. Nowadays there are mIRC channels and discords that allow for pick up games in a different mod, but loading up baseq3 and going to multiplayer was never the way we all found our public servers, even in the heyday. There might still be active servers in 3wave, orange smoothie, and rocket arena 3 if you want to get your quake fix in. Quake Live is still far more popular though.
