If I had to guard Victor Wembanyama, here's generally how I'd approach defending him: Due to his huge size advantage, I wouldn't try to aggressively pressure him full court. He's too easy to pass over me. Instead I'd play back further in the half court and try to stunt his moves inside. First thing is cutting off his dominant hand. I don't want to give Vic space to gather and launch that smooth stroke of his. I'd try to crowdsource him to his weak side as much as possible. Against his dribble, I'd stay low in a defensive stance and try to feel where he wants to go. His handles are tight for his frame, so physicality is key. Can't let him generate steam down the lane. In 1-on-1 post situations, I'd fight hard not to let him seal me down low. Quick double teams might be needed if he establishes deep position. Help defense is crucial against his drives and kicks too. I'd trust my fellows to rotate hard and contest any of his impressive passes. It'd take a full team effort to guard Vic properly. My quickness and motor could help, but it'd be a challenge no doubt. Definitely the biggest assignment I've ever had! Just gotta swarm him and hope he misses.
