- The War of 1812 appeared to be a dark time for the fledgling United States, until Oliver Hazard Perry pulled off what seemed like an unthinkable upset over the British navy in Lake Erie.
Excellent story telling. Surprised, wasn't expecting such a thorough telling. Thanks.
Walter’s knowledge is a treasure. It was great to sit down with him.
I'm looking at the restored Brig Niagara from the rear windows of the library. All is quiet today and I am trying to imagine this graceful ship in the midst of battle ! 😮
It's so impressive. Battles are such brief and terrible moments, it makes us appreciate the quiet days
Great story and discussion.
I feel Mort Kelly's "We have met the enemy and he is us" is much more accurate in life.
The video was very good
Luck favors the bold. Thanks for another great video.
The gentleman was talking about the Napoleonic wars. GB would stop ships and decimate the crew to fill their own ranks. Americans were English no doubt so they would empty ships leaving only enough crew to get your ship home. They were regularly emptying crew of English and American ships to keep their ships full and fighting ready.
Read all of the Horatio Hornblower books for an understanding what a man went through who was pressed into being a Sailor aboard a GB ship. It was worse than slavery. It was for the most part a death sentence. But stopping American ships and boarding them with impunity can cause some anger at home.
Wonderful contribution! Thank you Elijah!
Mr Rybka….thank you!
Where did all the cannons ect on these ships come from? Forest provide wood ect but both sides had all those cannons on the ships.
The Canadian ships had British artillery, and the Americans had their cannons delivered from Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was an iron manufacturing capital that was not far away.
The British had their hands full Fighting Napolean in Europe so they cudnt commit full effort in a Minor War in former Colony?
👍👍😊😊
