    ANOTHER QUICK UPDATE AS OF JUNE 2021: Yes, I am aware of Fototech in Poland, and yes I did send the camera out to them, and yes I do have it back, and yes it does work, and yes I am extremely happy about it and will make more videos about this camera in the future lol. Thanks for everyone who to took the time to suggest them. I sent it to them last year as a birthday gift for myself.
    QUICK UPDATE: User Can Arbak pointed out that I made a mistake: Starting at 5:00, I call out using the flicky switchy boi to focus. That is fake news. You actually need to hold the AF/MF button, and use the wheel on the top. I haven't been able to use the camera in quite a while (since mine died) and I completely goofed that one up. Sorry about that!

    Actually there is a workshop in Poland manufacturing spare parts and also repairing the LCD screen. It is just a UA-cam search away. They manufacture the ribbon cable themselves and apparently It works as long as if you got it new when fixed.

    Buy a GA645 - there are two versions - either with a 45mm lens or a 60mm lens. Much better than the zi. No lcd screen on the back that eventually gives out.

    Having re-watched this video after 2 years, I'll offer my review of this review. Like many "reviewers", he almost certainly has never read the 50 page users manual which came with the camera. Unlike most such paperwork, this manual is a highly condensed summary of the vast number of features and controls available on the camera, apart from just switching to "program" and letting the camera do all the work. He bitches about the focus, but 99% of focus errors are the user not the camera, usually placing the focus target on the wall behind his subject rather than on his subject. This camera has been around for more than 20 years, and the only electronic failure I've ever heard of concerns the muti-circuit cable between the LCD and feature setting buttons on the back and the main body, which is a serious design flaw. At the time he made the video, that was not repairable commercially, and his concern was valid. Now, that concerns no longer exists, and used values have nearly doubled as a result. In summary, chalk this review up to casual and largely unfounded remarks of a purchaser who got bitched off because he bought a camera he knew was broken and lost his investment, or in other words, a numbnuts who is just turning his ignorance into content for a YT post.

    Thanks for the ribbon tip! I have a failing Zi as well, half the LCD is not visible. I also have the GA645 (fixed focal length) and I love shooting with that camera even more than the Zi, mainly because the focal length suits portraits really well (it's looks like a 40mm on a 35mm camera). Anyway I've had both cameras for about 20 years (a little less on the Zi) and the plain old GA is still operating perfectly. The LCD on that camera is on the top of the body and there is no ribbon cable on the door. If you haven't got one perhaps consider picking up the non zoom version it could be more robust. Possibly my all time favorite camera.

    Listening to you talk about the LCD failing triggers me! My LCD is half working, thanks for letting me know about the ribbon cable. I've come to love this camera like my own child, thinking about buying a second one in case my first one fails.

    A Fuji GFX 50R with the GF35-70 Lens is the successor, a digital version of this camera. You'll need a Flash, but for landscapes and portrait work, it's pretty nice.

    Thank you for the review pointing out the essential drawback that made me think twice while seconds away from buying the 645zi. So now going for the full mechanical Fuji 6x9, heavier yes, but more reliable too! Reliability is what counts more to me with vintage equipment.

    A lot of point and shoots have that ribbon-cable-on-the-door-hinge situation. I lost a Konica Big Mini and almost lost my GA645zi cause of that damn cable. I just stay away from cameras with LCDs on the film door now haha. Its a shame cause this camera is hands down my favorite point and shoot/travel camera!

    Hi,
    Just a simple correction, you are not using the zoom button for manual focus. You should turn the dial on top while holding the AF/MF button. I wish you know your camera a little bit while you are making a review of it.

      @@canarbak Thanks for your reply- I misunderstood what you meant in the first one. But after re-reading it, I see what you mean. I actually just looked up the manual and you are completely right about that. Thanks for pointing out that mistake. I'm gonna add a pinned comment at the top to correct that one. I haven't been able to use the camera in quite a while since mine died and I completely goofed that one up.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 роки тому

      Right. That's a revolving problem on YT - guys who buy a camera they do not know, maybe read the manual, and maybe not. Then whip out a video implying that they are the last word on the camera and it's secrets. There are actually several significant errors in this video, including how the autofocus system works. (It's not perfect, but it isn't nearly as random in its performance failures as suggested). The difference is trying to apply experience with a multi-zoned autofocus digital camera to a dual system, single focus point film camera(and not checking the focus readout in the finder). The flexibility of use in the GA645Zi is probably higher than any film camera ever made, and trying to learn all of its little features requires a dedication which no point and shoot user will ever commit, and that user ignorance is part of the problems associated with the camera.Tip: Don't buy this camera if you want to use it manually. It is far harder and slower to use manually than suggested here. If you want to adjust the exposure, use the auto-exposure system followed by the compensation dial. If you want to manually control focus, buy a Bronica Etrsi.

    I did not know that such a (non-toy) 120 point-and-shoot camera existed! It occupies the very rare space in between the super high-end 120 cameras and the “toy” 120 cameras. If I had one, I think I would use it a lot more often than my “toy” 120 cameras, which can be very finicky to use. And while the blurry, light-leaked look can be awesome at times, sometimes I wish I could get more out of the capabilities of 120 film. I would have loved to have one of these cameras but between the super-high price and the unreliability, it’s an unfortunate no from me. But I would also love to know if similar cameras to this one exist!

    Great video and those interested in getting this camera should heed the warning. They are way overpriced now and to have them fail would be a huge loss of money. There is a YT video of a fellow repairing one of these cameras, so it appears that they can be repaired. Why no camera repair services wish to do it is a mystery. We also know that Fuji made a competent trio of manual rangefinder medium format cameras that work quite well, and are less prone to electronic failure.

  • @randallstewart175

    There are several flaws in this review. As to auto-focus errors, my experience is that auto-focus errors belong to the camera user. Per his comments that maybe the subject was too dark, not at all. This camera uses two auto-focus systems. In closer distances, say up to 12-15 feet or so, it uses an active system with an infrared beam, It can focus in the complete dark if necessary. Beyond the active focus distance, it uses a passive system just like 99% of 35mm film and digital SLRs.It focuses at the subject you point it at. I've seen on instance on a Contax T2 where the "focus spot" in the finder was misplaced as to where the camera was focusing, so that might also explain some issues. As to the LCD failure, it is not commonly an indicator of failure of electronics; it is almost always a failure of the ribbon calbe itself; one or more circuit leads break where the cable bends in normal use. Since replacement cables are not available, that is still a problem. However, people have repaired those breaks, although its a real hassle. He is right in that the camera is expensive, and buying one can be a crap shoot resulting in loss of most of your investment if it breaks, as even if it repairable, parts are not normally available and most repair shops won't work on it because they cannot easily get parts.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 роки тому +1

      Repair update: There is camera repair firm in FINLAND which can/will repair the broken back connection problem by replaacing the cable. They have a 30 minute UA-cam video showing how the repair is done, so you can either buy the replacement part(s) from them, less than $100, or send them the camera and have them do the whole repair, about $200. Looking at the repair process, you will probably conclude that paying them to do the whole job is the clear preference. So get all of those Zi shelf queens down and put 'em back to work.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 3 роки тому

      Correction: Not Finland, it's in Poland. Having rewatched the video, I'm appalled at the number of errors regarding operation and features made here. This is not a video you want to watch if you seriously want to learn anything about the camera. Example: He repeatedly thumbs the lever on the camera back as a focus adjustment, while complaining that the camera does not focus properly. The lever he's thumbing is the power zoom control for the lens, an ignorant error.

It's fine, it does it's job but it needs a wrench to adjust the angle. If your phone needs to stay in one position it's perfect, but it can be mad annoying if you need to move it and forget the wrench. There's also probably a much smarter way to mount it out there, but since I had the stuff laying around, I put them to use. Hope that helps
