The schemes of Castlemilk, The Drum, Easterhouse and Pollok probably looked a great idea on paper in the 50's, but all suffered from the same problems. I lived in Easterhouse, for a while, in 1983. In a two-story house near the train station. I worked almost entire in Easterhouse, and surrounding areas. I am from Arizona, in the US. When I arrived there, I had never seen so many government apartment buildings. I was also not prepared for the amount of people just hanging out, those living off the government dole. And I could not believe the number of dogs...dogs and dog manure everywhere. When I was new there, I stepped in it all the time. Easterhouse reminds me of many inner cities, in the United States. . They have been run by liberal/socialist-minded politicians, for decades, and are now in a state of decay. (Vast areas of Detroit, Michigan have been bulldozed down, and made into empty lots). The local politicians seem to retain their power, by promising freebies, to residents, ie, free housing, no need to find a job, a "We'll take care of you, just trust us" mentality. It's a shame. I loved the people there, but what living conditions...But that's government-run housing projects, for you.
lol I grew up in easterhouse from 1959 to1980, and trying to explain the amount of dogs to people who have never experienced it is funny.... 6 families in a close and at least 5 of them had dogs and every dog was allowed to roam the streets including mine, then occasionally council did a round up and we had to go to cardonald dog home and buy dog back, or as we called it, picking up the dug fae its holiday hoose... regarding the unemployment, it was unusual not to be in work pre 80s, the dole became massive in 80s onward all over uk, and drugs became an issue which lead to crime and other problems... but local politicians have no power to offer anyone a free home, or say we will take care of u, government housing was an improvement to what had been before, and its even better now with the Glasgow housing association and its reasonably priced rented modern homes...
I was brought up in Queenslie which was like little Easterhouse. Great when I was young, but later in life it was full of glue sniffers and those who lost there way due to having nothing. Let down by the council.
I remember Easterhouse in the late 1980s. Dante's inferno comes to mind. I was a security guard for a few days. My father told me that when it was first built, people nick-named it Exodus because everybody wanted out as soon as they arrived. I forget the street names, but I have this memory of burnt-out cars and a 30-foot-high water spout on the pavement. Half the houses were boarded up. It looked like a third-world nightmare Disneyland in the city of culture.
Hiya, you are welcome. Feel bad for the struggles people went through back then, sad that another generation will probably face the same crap :(. Was shocked when he said how long he'd been married for and how many kids he had - he looks so young!! Different times back then I suppose.
And before Easterhouse, The Gorbals was branded Glasgow Hell's Kitchen, not a lot of it was that bad, good few streets needed wiped but not the whole place, a lot of the old buildings (thanks to old pictures) would be worth an astounding fortune if they were still here.. Easterhouse on the other hand; A combination of poor planning before and after World War II, lack of facilities then Thatcher killing industry stone dead, had been declining from the end of World War II but she was the icing on the cake, doing little for people in Glasgow and elsewhere in the same situation bringing about a lead on to where things are today, which tends to be the butt of many people's jokes...
Except there were 3 others of a similar size , each in the 4 corners of Glasgow ... Drumchapel in the NW . Pollok in the SW, Castlemilk in the SE and Easterhouse in the NE. All built with roughly the same design of house . Billy Connolly who got moved from Partick to Drumchapel called it a “ desert with windows “
Hiya, I would be interested in how you obtained the video I have been trying to obtain a copy of another film in the series of whose town is it anyway for a number of years.
"Councillors are paid to represent the people but they don't do it". To think that a woman in this film said this and 4 decades later it's still the same. The councillors - like MSPs and MPs now - ask the people to vote them into power and say they'll do this, that and the other thing if they give them their vote. Once they get their 4rse in the chair they do what THEY want. There is no legal accountability - they can literally tell a pack of lies and then cook up an excuse - as they do - for not doing what they said they would. The only thing that will change this is to make it illegal for a politician to say they'll do something and to then not do it. Manifesto documents should form the basis of a legally enforceable contract between the politician and the people.
very interesting. all the east end housing was let down by the council. (cranhill, easterhouse, queenslie, etc). you'd put in for a repair..... never get it.... and thats just the tip of the iceberg. never be ashamed of where you came (Glasgow made me what I am). There is no two ways about it ; the areas were neglected. Still are.
My nana lived here, utter cesspit and was always scared going to visit her as a little girl. Shame on GCC Planning isolating thousands of impoverished people in the middle of nowhere in substandard housing.
Still proud to say that I was from Easterhoose, went there at 6 months old, until I was 20,moved away and still, take pleasure in telling people, that it was the business living there,Provy boy from Balfluig Street,(still a West Rebel at 56 ) mad innitt

Can anyone say which year that this programme was made.I was a regular visitor to Easterhouse in the 80s.I never remember it looking as bad as it is in the film. My mate and his girlfriend used to live down beside a bar called the Casbah.
You think it looks bad here... You should have seen what it looked like some 10 years later right before they started to demolish the area in the mid to late 90s. It was a much bigger shit hole that was dangerous as fuck... I knew a few people from that area back then. Good people for sure, but there was some real shit going on in the back ground. Drugs was a major Issue. I saw a mother with her child in one arm get slapped the fuck out ov... Saw a bus driver getting mugged with a kitchen knife and to top it of on a different bus a kid threw a brick through the drivers window for a laugh. I dont know if the 70s, 80s were anything like this, but easterhouse as i grew up was a real no go area.
sadly all the peripheral council estates of Glasgow like Drumchapel, Castlemilk etc. were victims of poor planning when it came to amenities and schools. I live in Drumchapel and the strong community spirit is what made these estates thrive today in spite of the poverty and deprivation. Sadly 33 years on from this, these estates have been regenerated but some things never change. I personally enjoy living in Drumchapel but I still think more could be done to tackle the problems that still exist in places like Drumchapel, Easterhouse etc. Investment in council housing in the 1980s could've been a help but Thatcherism had no interest in helping out those in poverty and deprivation not only in housing but also in employment. As these estates continue to be regenerated, hopefully both community spirit and activism will be a voice to those in power that past mistakes should never be repeated!
It’s funny how everyone blames Thatcherism .... you do realise the Labour Party has been in power a number of times before and since and done absolutely nothing for the working class ? We have been forgotten about as now our government is only interested in the new arrivals . Get your head out of the sand .
@@samoday2992 in the context of this video, Thatcherism was indeed a contributory factor. It was filmed in 1984 and, at that time, Margaret Thatcher was introducing privatisation and neoliberal economics. Following the introduction of the Right to Buy Scheme in 1980, residualisation was definitely evident in the peripheral housing schemes of Glasgow (as well as the rest of the UK). Therefore, Thatcherism indeed - at the time that this episode was filmed and aired - was contributory to the problems. I totally agree with you. The Labour Party of today has most certainly lost sight of being all for the working class as PMs like Tony Blair have continued in neoliberalism and neoliberalism economics. The historical roots and historical campaigning for the working class - via the Labour Party - are long gone. I, too, am working class and from a working class background and am appalled at the lack of voice for the working class. New Labour is nothing in comparison to its shadow!
one of the things that the women of Easter house were not allowed to have were there own public hall, like there granny had before them, Govan public hall Springburn public hall Shettelston public hall , where they could do there own thing, and except the thrill of applause or bood as was due for there own efforts . but in keeping , with socialism the were issued with a community education centre staffed by the councils private direct works department or the uni professors degree in this or that
Surely as a first step we should stop having children if there is little or no prospect of a reasonable life?! I didn't want to have a family given the impoverished life I experienced and I made the right decision not to have children... I'm sure the developers made a whack from building these new towns....
Alex Viola, my nana called him a monkey with a red tie, Easterhoose Labour Party club didn’t stay open long, amazingly money went missing what a surprise
Whoever the architect was that designed the steel frame windows should have been sent back to school. The amount of condensation sitting on the concrete cill every morning was atrocious and contributed to the dampness that was prevalent in most houses.
i hate it when people slag off an area they have never even been to and never met the people,im sure most people at easterhouse were sound.never judge a man till u have walked in his shoes.
er no they didnt mate i was raised in provenhall easterhouse in 80s/90 and it was terrible had to que up for free food from EEC so lets not think we all helped etc then it was just as bad except there was no food banks etc
the women of easter house were not allowed to have a referendum on prohibition, but had to accept the possibility of a sore face behind closed doors, to please the elbow benders.

22.10 wisest comment ever. Trying to blame black people for riots in England and the lack of them in Scotland. Lack of private property being the real reason - eloquent man.
I was born and raised in a scheme not unlike this one. I thought my scheme had problems until I came to america and saw some of the worst neighborhoods I had ever seen in my life.
It’s a shame Easterhouse wasn’t and isn’t compared with Shatilla or Beirut or Baghdad and instead of feeling pity they might feel contentment. And they are free to move!
I believe there hasn't been riots because their isn't as much black people he in Scotland and Glasgow now their are more and more now coming into social house and people that have been brought up in these areas are finding it hard to be housed due to refuges being a priority look at the difference from 1970s to 2015 and the prof is all their
exactly the same has happened in manchester..all the working class areas like this have been swamped with refugees and foreigners getting priority housing and benefits..it makes me sick :/

6 families in a close and at least 5 of them had dogs and every dog was allowed to roam the streets including mine, then occasionally council did a round up and we had to go to cardonald dog home and buy dog back, or as we called it, picking up the dug fae its holiday hoose...
regarding the unemployment, it was unusual not to be in work pre 80s, the dole became massive in 80s onward all over uk, and drugs became an issue which lead to crime and other problems... but local politicians have no power to offer anyone a free home, or say we will take care of u, government housing was an improvement to what had been before, and its even better now with the Glasgow housing association and its reasonably priced rented modern homes...
tubbychubby1.. a mind the dogs used to run aboot in big packs lol
How I’m the hell did you get from Arizona to Easterhouse?? That’s unbelievable!

Lived in denmilne st 72 to 81 it was the best years of my life brilliant place ❤️
what an excellent documentary.
I was brought up in Queenslie which was like little Easterhouse. Great when I was young, but later in life it was full of glue sniffers and those who lost there way due to having nothing. Let down by the council.
i loved living in easterhouse. best childhood ever from 1960 till 1973. i lived in baldragon road and went to st leonards.
_" It looked like a third-world nightmare."_ Now politicians are filling it with third-world people.
Hiya, you are welcome. Feel bad for the struggles people went through back then, sad that another generation will probably face the same crap :(. Was shocked when he said how long he'd been married for and how many kids he had - he looks so young!! Different times back then I suppose.
The Glasgow version of the Bronx.
Lived dunskaith place 1965-1979 left when they pulled our street down .loved living in our PEN.

Manifesto documents should form the basis of a legally enforceable contract between the politician and the people.
that's a good idea about it being a legally binding contract
this is great, and a good reminder of life under LABOUR councils
We need to find the lady in this film
Yes definitely! I'd love to how she is and where she is now
very interesting. all the east end housing was let down by the council.
Shame on GCC Planning isolating thousands of impoverished people in the middle of nowhere in substandard housing.
i bet she loved the fact she could see you.. i hope things turned out good for you
Still proud to say that I was from Easterhoose, went there at 6 months old, until I was 20,moved away and still, take pleasure in telling people, that it was the business living there,Provy boy from Balfluig Street,(still a West Rebel at 56 ) mad innitt

Can anyone say which year that this programme was made.I was a regular visitor to Easterhouse in the 80s.I never remember it looking as bad as it is in the film.
My mate and his girlfriend used to live down beside a bar called the Casbah.
It looks about 83, Just going by the cars and clothes.
That young woman with the black hair is brilliant. All of the people in tyis video are.
Would of loved to have seen the Sheffield episode it advertised
sadly all the peripheral council estates of Glasgow like Drumchapel, Castlemilk etc. were victims of poor planning when it came to amenities and schools.
90snostalgicgal where abouts u live ma da lives in drumry rd east
I'm in Kinfauns Drive
"strong community spirit".. and also huge levels of violence and theft and drug sales etc.. but yes there's lots of good people too
Does anyone remember the Dobbies.
No but i knew a few dobbers
one of the things that the women of Easter house were not allowed to have were there own public hall, like there granny had before them, Govan public hall Springburn public hall Shettelston public hall , where they could do there own thing, and except the thrill of applause or bood as was due for there own efforts . but in keeping , with socialism the were issued with a community education centre staffed by the councils private direct works department or the uni professors degree in this or that
£37 pounds 40 hour week remember it well
that point about the riot was spot on!!
Anyone, what's the tune in the opening sequence? Ta.
I wish it had subtitles. I understand english but it's hard to follow with the accent. I love it tho.
Surely as a first step we should stop having children if there is little or no prospect of a reasonable life?! I didn't want to have a family given the impoverished life I experienced and I made the right decision not to have children... I'm sure the developers made a whack from building these new towns....
We had a lovely house at 3 kildermorie path… till the bad elements move in…

Yes, the flats at least had good sized rooms. But the streets and blocks themselves were claustrophobic.
Whoever the architect was that designed the steel frame windows should have been sent back to school.
The amount of condensation sitting on the concrete cill every morning was atrocious and contributed to the dampness that was prevalent in most houses.
i hate it when people slag off an area they have never even been to and never met the people,im sure most people at easterhouse were sound.never judge a man till u have walked in his shoes.
from the word go that the women of Easterhous were never going to be allowed to own there on home, so what was the point in trying

Great people in all the housing estates of Glasgow.
Local government and goody two shoe types ,arrive to appease their own social conscience then after massaging their patronising ,condescending egos retturn to their boring existence outside the schemes.
Their present agenda is mollcoddling bogus asylum seekers ,mostly young muslim men / wee boys with beards and massaging themselves thus.
Mollycoddle oor ain ,gie yer ain folk amenities and work and the schemes will thrive ,they dinnae need inner city do gooding commuting visitors but work and facilities.
Ned central, I wouldn't live in Easterhouse if the council paid my rent every month.

So very true!
22.10 wisest comment ever. Trying to blame black people for riots in England and the lack of them in Scotland. Lack of private property being the real reason - eloquent man.
Aye that's what it is 😂
The girl doing a lot of the talking is so patronising and condescending. When talking about her mother with her Glasgow uni accent, it put me off.
