Shooting Landscapes at Toroweap Overlook

- I recently went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with my two brothers Jim & Johnathan. We spent the night in Toroweap and went to the overlook before the sun rose.
My brother Jim filmed me while we traversed the overlook, and while I shot some landscapes.

I used my Canon 5DSR with my 17mm tilt-shift lens so I could stitch all my frames together in post. Stay tuned to the end of the video to view the final images.

Ah I know that ledge well; great 60+miles of gravel to get there; but totally worth it.
The shots you captured are some of the very best I've seen from Toroweap. Of all the places I've traveled to in the American west Toroweap is hands down the most memorable. I'm torn between wanting to see that road improved and paved so anyone who desires can experience this beautiful place, and wanting to see it stay the same difficult grind forever. I lean heavily toward the latter.

What a spectacular place. Believe it or not, I've never set foot on the Grand Canyon, but like you, have long wanted to find and shoot this place after seeing David Muench's and Peter Lik's images of that magical spot. That's really cool. And those final shots were beautiful. The drop offs, just in this video, had the backs of my legs twitching, but I'd definitely still be up there. You inspire Joel, you have since the first video I watched on Kelby One. Think I might just join your academy because you seem to have just the right flavour of teaching, inspiring and grass roots authenticity.

Cool location and beautiful shots Joel. Most places of outstanding beauty become victims of their own success, the only thing in our favour is a limited percentage that will get up for a sunrise.
If you hike from Toroweap down the Tuckup trail a little ways to Cove canyon there is a trail from there to the lip of Cove Canyon that overlooks the Colorado River. It is my opinion that the view from there is even better than from the Toroweap Overlook.

I really appreciate what you’re doing I 68 years old I love out door photography I travel all over the world just take pictures. This my passion to take pictures. Couple years ago I went mount Bromo Indonesia mountain with live volcano It is very adventures journey. When I get to the top of the mountain after few shots I ran out my memory card. I left my memory card at in my hotel.
I thought I will go back next day but next 4 days non stop raining. I have only one sunny day. I am planning to go back this year in late September because this is very good time for photography. No rain I wish you should go there. You will appreciate the nature. I have all top of line canon and Nikon bodies and lenses but I don’t have tilt lenses.

I almost had to stop watching this because you were so close to the edge. The shots you got are incredible though I must say.
Beautiful images. I recently bought the 24mm TS for a trip to the southwest this fall. Would love to attempt that location except for my fear of heights. Was scared for your brother walking while filming.
Joel, you are in pretty good shape for nearly 61! With poor balance caused by my knees and back, if I tried to walk along that ridge like that then I think I would suddenly become a 63 year old Angel!
My first trip to Toroweap was June 2002. At that time there was two camp sites right on the edge. From my tent a person chuck a rock about 50 feet over the edge and 3000 feet to the river. Those sites have been closed. Now camping at the larger camp ground. Need a 4x4 higher clearance vehicle to get in there. I was last there in Feb 2012 with the teardrop trailer I built to take that road. It was a great trip. Lots of photography opportunities and solitude.
I don't think you could go there now pulling a teardrop. There is a 22 foot limit for your vehicle plus anything you're pulling. My understanding is they measure and enforce it at the Ranger Station.

How come your brothers got all the good looks in the family? Another great vid. Who wouldn't want to sell a photograph to help support their hobby. I retire sometime this year & if things are safe, hoping to travel the US west all the way up into BC. I would be willing to go back to that site for a week or 2 if needed. For pros starting out you need to be able to support yourself to stay out there for 33 days to get the right conditions. I know you know how fortunate to be out there with no other visitors. Something could probably only dream about today. Would of loved to seen the image at the end. Stay safe!
There will never be a lot of visitors at this location. An advance permit is required for either the campground or for day use. There are about 10 campsites and I think day permits are limited to about 20. The day permit people won't be there at sunrise or sunset because it's close to a 3 hour drive in and out and you can't do it in the dark.
Joel, all the people in the park is a GOOD thing. I am saddened when I go to a park that is underfunded, poorly maintained but beautiful. However, without visitors, they cant groom the trails, add lodging or create amenities. We are the marketing department for our national treasurers.

WOW I've been to the Grand Canyon, but really loved this spot. I've also seen this view in another shot ... where exactly did you make this video?
One comment that Jumped out at me was when you commented on "Bracketing" & "Focus Stacking" at the same time.
That is one Golden Nugget that I'm going to have to try. I was taught Bracketing, or Focus Stacking but not both.
What I found was the foreground turns out amazing, but the background is soft focus.
Would that be because of improper focus, camera shake, or Depth of Field.
most likely a small combo of all these things. I have a video on capturing sharp photos... 🤓

We are being over run with people in our parks due to our photos and UA-cam videos pointing out all the spots.
