We need to underground all electrical equipment no matter the cost. Leaving live electrical wires up in drought-prone areas that get 100mph winds is pure negligence. Tuesday night we looked out our windows and saw a transformer explode in City Terrace about 10 miles south of the Eaton fire. Transformers and power lines were popping all over the city.
Hurst fire was wind caused by conductor/transformer damage, loud bang, & electrocution sound which ignited brush causing the fire 🔥. We were evacuated shortly after.
From the website of the L.A. Regional Fire Safe Council:
Until the 1870’s, wildfires (as today, mostly accidently or purposely human-caused) in the mountains north of Los Angeles were considered more of an attraction than a threat, especially at night. They were fondly described as “tongues of flame licking the Sierra Madre.” Since few people lived on or near the mountains, fires there caused no great alarm. In fact, two cattlemen were reported to annually ignite big fires in the mountains that raised no concern. Wildfires only first became a concern in 1884 when flooding from eroded hillsides wiped out the track system of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the Los Angeles area. Authorities finally banned needless fires and even threatened to prosecute offenders. As fires and flooding resulting from fire erosion increasingly threatened property by the late 1800s, Angelenos lost their fondness for “beautiful” wildfires and demanded fire suppression.
Rooftop solar systems connected to the local electric distribution system. They are supposed to disconnect from the utility if the utility's power fails. This is for safety. When the line is supposed to be dead, any "distributed generation" needs to be dropped. And when the utility power goes away, these solar systems or other distributed generation cannot synchronize to anything - all of these systems have to pretty precisely synchronize to provide 60Hz power. You can't have out-of-sync power in the system or things will break. When we say the "grid" we are usually taking about transmission system, not distribution. There's a whole different level of protection on transmission systems. There are lots of systems armed to shut down lines in laterally fractions of a second, and immediately shed load and generation to keep everything that is remains on line stable.

Double circuit 500kv lines. Eaton hill. The wind was gusting. If the cable got closer than 11'3" it could have arched across to the tower or phase to phase. Look for scorching marks on cable to where it could have had a point of line fault. A green or blue flash in the sky before the brush fire could be a clue. Keep asking for video or eye witnesses.
Perhaps it's time to require all new builds to be 100% stone/non combustable, all utilities to be buried under ground, the water delivery infrastructure to be redesigned so that it can be controlled by the fire dept. in extreme times, and all new landscapes to be void of lawns and plants that require any sort of irrigation. These fires are not a surprise event. We all knew what was/is possible in the worst case scenarios. These weather disasters are man made, in that we take risks. If there were no risks, then insurance wouldn't be required. Some risks are greater than others, and where floods and fires are concerned the risks are the greatest.
Even if anyone could “ control all the water” no one can control, the hurricane strength winds or fight a fire or multiple fires in them. Nor can they extinguish a. Entire city ablaze in those conditions, even if they could get an ocean full of water. Too dangerous and cities aren’t equipped with adequate resources for an entire city ablaze at once as the wind keeps creating new fires by blowing embers around at 70-100 mph.

The video highlights significant concerns regarding the vulnerabilities of Southern California’s aging infrastructure, particularly its utility systems, amidst the growing frequency and intensity of wildfires. The possible involvement of Southern California Edison (SCE) in the Eaton and Hurst fires underscores a critical issue: the inherent risks posed by mid-century infrastructure when faced with modern challenges such as climate change and urban expansion. Key Insights: Utility Accountability The requirement for utilities to report potential involvement in fire incidents reflects heightened scrutiny but also raises questions about preventive measures. While SCE has reported no anomalies prior to the Eaton Fire, reports of equipment issues during the Hurst Fire (e.g., a downed conductor) highlight the critical need for proactive upgrades to aging systems. Infrastructure Modernization SCE’s challenges reflect a broader issue with outdated infrastructure across Los Angeles and California. Relying on mid-20th-century systems to meet 21st-century energy demands is unsustainable. Immediate action is needed to modernize infrastructure, including undergrounding power lines and adopting advanced monitoring technologies to reduce risks and improve reliability. Investigative Transparency Public trust depends on transparent and thorough investigations. Reports from community members of visible flashes in the sky, potentially linked to electrical faults, underscore the need for detailed analysis and accountability from utility providers to address these concerns effectively. Wildfire Mitigation In addition to addressing infrastructure issues, comprehensive wildfire prevention strategies are essential. This includes enhanced vegetation management, robust community education, and strong collaboration between utility companies, local governments, and fire agencies to mitigate the risks of future fires. The incidents discussed in the video highlight the urgent need for Los Angeles to address the challenges posed by its outdated infrastructure. Investing in resilient and forward-thinking solutions is crucial to mitigate risks, protect communities, and ensure the safety and reliability of critical systems in an increasingly unpredictable environment.

Well no. Utilities operate under licenses with conditions. Being among the most critical of infrastructure, often operating as monopolies, they don't have a blanket right to remain silent.
