The sport was incredibly dangerous in those days and there was no common sense as far as safety standards go. Spectators also shared in the danger standing so close by the tracksides out in the open. There's none of that today. Great job on the video and good racing shots!

In rallying some of that pure enthousiasm is still there. The crowd helpts the driver when there is a crash.

"I was never a fast driver" (Fangio). What did he mean? I believe he meant he could outsmart them all. And he did.

Complete mad men. Gonna climb in a metal coffin, on garbage rubber, no seatbelt, wearing a leather helmet and gonna go 200mph. The safety briefing consisted of telling the driver "Don't hit anything."
They didn't need aero. The weight of their giant balls kept them on the track.

Ah yes, the time when cars, even stock ones had little to no safety features. The gas guzzling, smoke filled, and quite eventful decade of the 1950’s.

Picking Motor Racing Greats is like picking GOAT boxers, if you don't choose Ali - your judgement is called in question, likewise with racing and not choosing Senna. While Senna is in my top 5, Fangio just HAS to be the best, because he could win an F1 race one week, step into a sportscar the next and then jump into a Formula 2 or 3 for a exhibition race the week after and win that also. NO one today could even try to do that, Senna just doesnt come close to his versatility i'm sorry - he was an F1 driver - Fangio was a DRIVER full stop.

Its hard to compare drivers from different times. But you are very right, the versatility of some older drivers was astounding. It wasnt uncommon to be racing F1 and F2 at the same time, whilst also preparing for le man. And the danger level was so high.
