My cousins played this album to me when I was about 14. I was into pop music up until then. I’d never heard anything like it. Made in Japan set me on a course to blues, heavy rock, folk, prog and so much more.
Machine Head changed my life too. Prior to hearing that I was a Stones, Beatles, and AM pop rock afficionado. DP brought the harder rock and rhythm and blues to my world. : ) And Made In Japan ... well, that became my favorite album of all - and still is.
This was such a dramatic experience for me. I had heard “Strange Kind of Woman” and “Child in Time” on the radio. I decided to go see Deep Purpel, June 1972 was right upfront in front of Richie Blackmore .Ian Gillen walk out on stage they go in the intro riff of “Highway Star” Gillen grab the microphone stand throws it at the audience steps on it flies back in his hand then Richie Blackmore breaks in his guitar riff and just all hell breaks loose. They basically perform the whole album “Made in Japan” plus I think “Maybe I’m a Leo” Blackmore was one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen in my life , this was about five weeks before they recorded made in Japan. I was so lucky to see Deep Purpel in 1972.I’ve been a fan ever since
This is such a landmark release in so many ways. Not just as one of the greatest live albums ever but also the fact that it put Japan on the map as a vital and unique hub for rock music. I suspect many of us have Japanese imports in our collections plus an appreciation of the latter's music scene. Purple really blazed a trail here.
This is just the best live rock album ever! No needs to search anymore... I listened to it a lot of time when I was 16, in 2000 and I think now there's no perfect time to listen to it but probably an ideal age between 13 and 16, this is perfect! Thank you DP for changing my life, and thank you Phil for your vidéos.
After many years of having no turntable I splashed out and bought a good quality one. The first track I played was Highway Star from my 72 issue MIJ with the volume cranked. My god, what an absolute experience! Blew me away!!
Hi Strat Pack, what a wonderful way of welcoming a new turntable into the house! I just love the way the track starts. As a listener you can feel your adrenaline rise with that of the band. Phil :)
Quite probably the greatest live album of all time. I listen to bits or all of this every week, it never ages and always puts a big grin on my face. The fluffed riff to "Smoke....." on night three is deliberate
Phil,we are cut from the same cloth, I collect DP stuff and Dalek's too.😅 This is the one, fave live record, fave band and lineup, tho loved the Mk3 lineup too. Bought all of these versions and still enjoy. I also liked Lizzys Live & Dangerous, BOCs On your feet or on your knees and Ashbone Wish' Live Dates, all very good, but that special golden wrappered double was the Wonkas golden ticket of Vinyl to me. The overall sound and recording flawed me then and still does to this day. And to think it was a cheap filler in their eyes. These for me are the definitive song versions. 'Can we have everything louder than everything else?'
Another excellent and insightful review. I can state without any doubt whatsoever, that Made in Japan has been and still is the most significant record in my entire collection (of well over 2,000 albums and counting of all genres and styles- rock, jazz, metal, funk, classical, country, etc, etc). It has informed all of my musical tastes and choices since I first heard it in 1973. MIJ is the absolute #1 album I would take to a desert island....no other record comes as close.
Hi Phil, great review mate. I was only 4 in 1972 but luckily for me my dad was an hard rock fan and I was brought up on this style of music! We both still love hard rock & metal and regular attend concerts together (my dad is now 77!) He recently gave me all his old vinyl and Made in Japan was the first LP I put on my turntable. The £2.80 price tag is still in tact in the top right hand corner! 👍
I love this video, Phil! What great memories! What an album!! I had a similar experience.... a friend of mine gave me a Cassette with the first two sides of Made In Japan on Side A, and the first two sides of Ted Nugent's 'Double Live Gonzo' on Side B! What a colossal combination! And, in the hands of a 14 yr old kid...I was hooked for life!! 😄🤘
Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories,Phil ! They really made me smile ! Made In Japan is in my bones.A true classic. I got it about 45 years ago, and still love it. It strikes a resounding chord in my head & heart. I can hear it ,practically note for note, without even putting it in the CD player. In fact,I only play the album maybe twice a year.Easily my favourite LIVE album of all time.
Hi Mike, thank you for watching. I know exactly what you mean. Before I made the video I thought to myself should I play it to remind myself what it is like. I soon realised that all I had to do was thomk about it and I could hear it all in my head ! Phil :)
Wonderful passion throughout Phil. Loved watching your enthusiasm for what is, by any standard, one of the great classic albums of the rock era. Looking forward to the next part. This could get expensive, however, lol.
Hi mate, nice hearing you reflect back to the 70,s when I was also, although none of us knew it, fortunate to be hearing as teenagers so much great new music from so many great new bands. I also fondly remember recording with one the original portable cassette players songs from the Radio, usually Radio Carolin and how my 4 year old sister would run into my room saying listen to this and that this was "Yes - Roundabout" and although she passed far to early of cancer I have such moments clear in my precious memory banks. For my 14th Birthday she bought me Deep Purple in Rock but also made me sit and listen to every verse of McGooghans Blues by Roy Harper. Made In Japan was the first time I heard Purple Live and what a sound and I think the same year I saw that lineup play in Edinburgh and even ended up on stage after the show to help pack away the equipment (a tactic by the roadies to hit on the 2 very pretty 17yr old schoolgirls that I was there with) anyway after asking I was allowed to strap on and strum Ritchie Blackmores Strat that was still on its guitar stand - that I also wont forget and damn why didnt I have a photo taken of that as I had a camera with me BUT often you dont know how special or unique some moments are in our lives as they can happen and pass so quickly. Anyway thanks for the good review.
Hi Phil, Man, Uncanny. Your experience with discovering Deep Purple almost mirrors my own experience of this incredible band. How you described each track on this brilliant album reflects the way I would have described it. You are right about Blackmore, live, there are often a lot of missed notes in his solos, but it didn't seem to matter, a lot of experimentation going on, it was exciting to listen to. Great reviews. Keep it up. Cheers.
Great to see the review now... Phil, - you are an expert in bringing back own memories from 72, listening the first time to this rock masterpiece. Interesting how we feel in the same way then....
Hi Laura, it captures this lineup of the band at the height of their powers. You can tell they are taking risks, it sounds chaotic but so exciting at the same time. Looking back through the lens of time there is some blues and even R&B amongst the grooves, it’s heavy metal with soul, passion and it still delivers whenever I play it. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Yes, that's what I especially love about 70s rock: the improvisation. Blackmore is one of my favourite guitarists, since he always improvises and loves that whammy bar. I have no idea how he kept the Strat in tune with the stock whammy bar on the Strat, since there were no Floyd Rose back then. LOL at horrifying your dad whilst using his record player. I did that many times and finally was sent to the basement when I got my own record player at 16. That way I could listen to music without annoying my parents.
Thank you for venturing into an album that must have been reviewed thousands of time. Yet you have come up with the best one I ever came across. Now I will go to Part 2. Have a great new year.
Hi, thank you for watching and your encouraging comments. As I have said in quite a few of my videos I have tied myself up in knots worrying about reviewing albums that are so well known there is nothing left that can be said about them. I have filmed and then deleted so many because of this! I decided this year just to share my personal stories, experience and enthusiasm for the music that has shaped my life. Hopefully this sets what I do apart from many of the other Channels out there doing similar things. Part two will be published very soon - Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine Dear Phil, I sort of went through your videos as I am relatively new to your channel, I can't say I like all the acts you have commented on like the Doobie Brothers but I do love most of them like Free (an obvious choice), Ian Hunter, Wishbone Ash, John Martyn (I have yet to watch it!). I actually was searching on the internet looking for reviews about Free but to no avail. I am so happy that I found your through the link to the Ian Hunter boxed set. Thanks for your great work. Please don't delete your videos as somehow somewhere there is someone who might dig them! BTW, kept forgetting to say you play a mean guitar too! I absolutely love the many editions/formats you’ve managed to collect over the years. I certainly look forward to Pt2 and hopefully you’ll tell us which edition is the best sounding experience with your wonderful ears. :) Well done, Phil. Amazing stuff.
Hi Phil, great video again. I'm currently listening to White Spirit one and only album. Featuring Janick Gers. Don't know if you've covered it but it's a cracking listen.

Hi, Wow, comments like this really spur me on to do more and know that I am doing the right thing. Thank you very much for subscribing and being part of the Now Spinning journey - Phil :)
Brilliant review Phil - with the enthusiasm I felt when I first heard this album - it was the first LP I bought together with Rainbow Rising ( another stellar release). Loved the playing of Blackmore - so free flowing with a great seamless interaction with John Lord. I had no idea there were so many versions either ?
Hi Rich, thank you for watching. Rainbow Rising is another classic album I need to cover as well. I remember queueing up to buy that and everyone else in the queue was buying it as well! Phil :)
Hi Bart, thank you for watching and finding my channel. Part two of this video will be out this week. I hope you can find a copy at a reasonable price. Phil :)
Hello Mr. Aston. Again a really special way describing an album that will live througth the years. Smoke on the water, was the 1st song I did listen from DP, so I decided to get something where I can find the best song from this guys. Well ANTHOLOGY was available but the 2 cd version. I took it and I listen to it . Fantastic. I like a lot. When I get finaly had the chance to listen in full MADE IN JAPAN I learned DP will be special forever. Thank you again for these videos hope become timeless aswell. Be safe. Keep on rocking.
Ah, this is funny, my first acquaintance with Purple was exactly the same - I heard Never Before as a 14 year old, and I was blown away...and still is..I listen to a lot of different music but I always, always come back to Deep Purple...
Fantastic review on Deep Purple Phil! My friend Squidly would play Deep Purple in his jeep it would pump us up before paddling out to go surfing🌊also Phil I bought that first Van Halen album from a Woolworth’s at the Maui Mall🤙🏽
Hi again and thank you for watching. I love your stories. It is great to think that these bands and their music created similar memories as we have all gone through life! Phil
I'm a MADE IN JAPAN fanatic . I remember an interview of Jon Lord (l think )who said that they didn't want it to be released outside Japan . The reason ? Japanese products till then didn't have a good reputation . Little did they know !!!
Yeah Rock Fans biographies seems to look quite similiar.. Mine is close to Yours. Got MiJ handed as straight copy from crackling vinyl... Listened to HS and thought whats coming next.... I was about 13... 14 listened to all these classic tracks. I remember I was totally blown away when I listened to Skow.... A Tour de Force in Blues Rock... climaxes & crescendo the Duelling Banjo vocal... To the day that Album means a lot to me!!! 🤘😉👌
Hi and thank you for watching. Also wonderful to hear from another fan of this album and how you discovered it. Music is the healer. Take care - Phil :)
Iam sorry to say that you are wrong about the SOTW recording date. It is from the first show. And as mentioned earlier; if you take a look at the footage from the 17. Aug. Blackmore is actually smiling across the stage, which was not his normal way of behaving when his was unsatisfied with his playing. In my opinion it was just another of these small altering-the-original things, that always makes you excited so see and hear the next show. Eg.: Playing "God save the Queen..." as an intro to his interpretation of Beethoven's fifth or "Jingle bells and countless others.
Hi Dennis, welcome to Now Spinning and thank you for finding me amongst all the other music channel's on UA-cam! Part Two to this video will be published on Monday. Phil
One of my favorite bands Phil ! Enjoyed your incite to your experience with this band. I have the 1998, 25th Anniversary Edition "Machine Head, " from Warner/Rhino 2cd edition. Thanks for the video, and take care, from N.H. U.S.A.
It sucks that they didn't film those nights. I always heard Blackmore never liked being filmed, but I think if they would have known how good this turned out, they might have put more into it.
I remember when video came out in the early 80s and the California Jam was released on VHS. All my mates were thinking ‘was Made In Japan filmed?’ Unfortunately the answer was no. It would have been the best live video of all time. Phil
Strange kind of woman was on the American release of fireball and demons eye on the uk release.. this album was not tinkered with in any way it is as if you were there.
Hi Robert, thank you for watching. I was also listening to Slade, Elton John, T Rex, Sweet etc. I think Status Quo were the bridge to bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Phil
This is still a brilliant lp even for today...fireball and in rock were brilliant but then they went too commercial for me not there hard rock style...
They made a mistake including The Mule and Spacetrucking . Speed King , Fireball and Black Night wouldve made more sense and made it a better album . 3.5 out of 5 is a realistic score for it
Thank you for watching and sharing your personal thoughts on this classic live album. It is probably impossible for me to extract the 14 year old that first heard this in 1973. These were formative years and a track that took up a whole side and took me on a journey where I could not really work out what and who was playing what just made it mind blowing. I can imagine someone hearing this for the first time might either hate it or live it. I know Martin Popoff has very little time for it! For me it is just a 10/10 masterpiece. Phil :)
Still excited like a 10 year old on Xmas eve when the power of Highway Star kicks off on MIJ. What an album. The Who live at Leeds is the only live album to come anywhere near it.
Hi Phil, Another great passionate review, of what is in my opinion is ' The Greatest Live Album of All Time ' no other live album comes close. Yes there are a lot of excellent live albums out there, but nothing touches this. Like you say Phil ' It's Dangerous '
Hi Raymond, thank you for a watching and your supportive comment. I agree 100%, there are many iconic live albums out there but Made In Japan by Deep Purple sits at the very top - Phil :)
Best album ever. I have owned so many copies. Original vinyl is best. Problem with the remasters is post production e.g applause of highway star overlaps start of child in time. Shirley mix is awful. Cant listen to it.
I love the Deep Purple albums but I'm not a fan of this one, in general I'm not overkeen on live albums per se and this one I just can't get into. I do have it on vinyl but only for the collection :)!
Hi Louise, thank you for watching. Your comment is very welcome, we are all different on what we like and that is what makes each of us unique. Phil :)

Ah, this is funny, my first acquaintance with Purple was exactly the same - I heard Never Before as a 14 year old, and I was blown away...and still is..I listen to a lot of different music but I always, always come back to Deep Purple...
Hi Hans, thank you for watching. Same here, Purple are a special band and all the off shoots as well - Phil :)
Hi Harry, thank you for watching. I remember that interview as well! Phil :)
Blackmore wasnt cocking up SOTW. It was just having fun, sheer imagination/improvisation.
The best live rock album all time
I am not going to argue with that - Phil :)
you're not wrong. ritchie blackmore is really on form, his playing is astounding.
If you don’t like them you don’t get it. If you get it you are hooked for life. I’m the later since 1975.
Totally true !
Thank you for watching and the extra info - Phil :)
Great show. Just started watching you .Peace from Canada .
Hi Jerry, thank you for watching. I have that copy of Machine Head as well. I am going to do a separate video for each Deep Purple album! Phil :)
@@NowSpinningMagazine Excellent !
I have the orginal lp from 72,the cd from orginal sound and the cd remasted 1998
Excellent review with great enthusiasm. Not an album I have heard. A bit too young for DP at the time as I was into Slade and Elton John.
Hi Robert, thank you for watching. I was also listening to Slade, Elton John, T Rex, Sweet etc. I think Status Quo were the bridge to bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine Such a magical time for popular music generally too.
Bought that four times.
This is still a brilliant lp even for today...fireball and in rock were brilliant but then they went too commercial for me not there hard rock style...
Hi, thank you for watching, I agree, a timeless masterpiece!
MIJ EL MEJOR LIVE DE LA HISTORIA DEL ROCK 🤘🏻 ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🎸🎸🎸🎸
Thank you for watching ! Phil :)
Hi Saul, thank you for watching and I know exactly what you mean. I also love Live at Leeds by The Who so I might cover that is a later video. Phil :)
Hi, thank you for watching. I play the original vinyl and the Japanese CD ‘Live in Japan The Most. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine oddly enough so do I!
Phil :)
I agree wth a lot you say, but I think you give far to little credit to the rest, especially Jon Lord..
I am working on a video which focuses solely on Jon Lord - Phil
Hi Phil i' M looking at your ancient reports in listening [Jésus-Christ superstar with Ian gillan ]réal pleasure to do,too hear your comment,Thanks ,again
Thank you for watching - Phil
