- 200 - Stewart Lee
One of the most iconoclastic, pioneering and influential comedians in Britain, Stewart Lee has forged his post-punk ideals into a thrillingly funny live act, with the very form at his fingertips.
We explore the deliberately uncomfortable tension between the man and the stage persona; discuss his self-imposed exclusion from the comedy community; and investigate his unshakeable conviction that he is in fact unsuccessful.

Stewart's comments on venue size, and ticket price etc. is bang on. He's right... the experience is better, and more intimate, in a smaller venue. And it's highly likely you'll want to go again, and bring a friend*.
*who probably won't understand what's going on and won't find it funny.
Totally agree , smaller venues are so much better as Stuart says the big massive venues the generic middle of the popular highway comedians strive for ( Michael money McIntyre) are just wrong . Same for music ,best to see your favourites up close
Stewart Lee is one of the very few comedians that unites the left and right.
Comedy at its best mocks all of us, and ( unlike 95% of the comics) his politics is no obstacle to one half of the population still loving, laughing along with him.
An original genius.
Wish he could be more like Tom O’Connor
Are you a sardine?
I’m in oil.
'cause you love the dead comedians, don't you?
Stew...Tom O'connor didnt miss a beat
Johnny Delgado’s let himself go.
My all time favourite comedian. Thanks for providing this content. I've let myself go.
Well played.
@@ComComPod yes indeed sir. must thank you also for this. loved it
@@forgive7449 Stew is my all time 42nd favourite comedian.
P E A C E : )
Reading these comments, I can now fully appreciate why Stewart thinks his audience is beneath him.
Just found this interview and it's really great. You asked Stew the deeper questions about his work that I'd like to think I'd have asked, the best interview of his I've heard.
Thanks Stuart! Do dive into the (breathes) 315 others currently available, there's a great one with Simon Munnery that you might enjoy...
@@ComComPod I'm halfway through a pre-Mash Report Nish Kumar on my podcast app and I've finished the massive two partner with Richard Herring. Safe to say I've found the archives!
@@StuartQuinn I apologise for the massive free time deficit...
This is great, thanks Stuart!
Great interview, many thanks
What's Ratko Mladic doing on this?
Glad to see General Ratko Mladić has turned his life around.
Lol, I saw him in Birmingham..didn't like it. But still a legend
so meta, the comedian's comedian stewart (lee) interviewed on a podcast called the comedian's comedian by a bloke called stuart...
I heard years ago that Lee Mack was the 'comedian's comedian' so I checked him out and decided I preferred Stewart Lee.
That's not meta mert.
The host also makes myths out of gold
No no no no nano pathologists ....
I keep bumping into Stewart Lee. The last time was in Camden Town just after Id let myself go.
Lol, I saw him in Birmingham..didn't like it something about Slobidam Milosevic...But still a legend
This is a great interview, thanks.
I remember days under Thatcher when jungle canyon rope bridges were non existent...Tory cuts.
terrific interview. well researched, you could tell stew engaged you.
40:56 The first time I saw Sadowitz I literally fell off my chair laughing, and rolled around some before I could get back up. I was actually incapacitated with laughter. But it wasn't "funny". It was subjectively repugnant, it was fearlessly and robustly offensive right across the board, and it was delivered in a non stop stream of pure, unadulterated vitriol that truly was a thing to behold. And the strange thing was, he didn't alienate the audience at all, because by the time you realise you've been in insulted in ways you always like to think you'd respond to with evisceration, he's moved on to someone else. It was completely brutal, wholly offensive, slanderous even, uncompromisingly graphic and lurid. And its the only time that I ever felt I'd literaly split my sides laughing. (I cracked a rib in fact, falling off my stool.) It was out the other side of funny, but it took a deep, dark dive to get there.
And he's such a fucking *purist* he doesn't record anything, and relentlessly takes any of his material down on you tube. Very much a "live" act. As in if you want to see him, you have to go and see him. Ever so good, he's Ebenezer Goode.
Grea podcast! It made me realise how my parents see me! 🤔😉🤣🙃😂
Just come across this and some of your other stuff. And actually its bloody good. Keep this up because theres not enough like it and studying writers like me really treasure this kind of work and I can't thank you enough for existing. Going to buy the book now as it happens. Cheers.
Terrific interview. I also like how Stuart Goldsmith's laugh sounds like The Wicked Witch pitched down an octave.

We live in a world where a talented genius like S.L aims to use it all to pay his bills just before he dies.

I recommend "letting yourself go" periodically, Stewart Lee is a hero who has pushed this to his "elastic limit". Can't wait until he reaches his " plastic limit".
Good engineering joke there.
The Ayatollah Khomeini has let himself go.
Brilliant
Stewart Lee always makes me think, then laugh, then ponder on life.... and today laugh out loud at the comments (??? let himself go ) lmfao..

Is there still a comedy tent at Glastonbury festival?
Thought I knew just about all of it (having gone 15 odd times) - and still not even _beginning_ to get bored by it. :D
It's called the Cabaret Tent, and you'll find it in the Theatre & Circus fields. I'll be MCing there on Saturday afternoon!
22:30 How mature, sensitive, understanding and clever is this guy! Love the Lee......But don't make him Ang Lee!
Chubby Checker's let himself go.
Stewart Lee is a great comedian,, his fans are the the most unimaginative, don’t they realise that all jokes when repeated ad nauseum become unfunny?

Thing is with Morrissey, he takes himself quite seriously. I for one have never found him very funny.
Mister Tumble has let himself go!
That Toby jug has let itself go.
Good to listen to. Although you don't have to start every question by giving a little anecdote about your personal life. When Stewart is going "Yeah, yeah.....yeah, yeah, yeah." He's waiting for you to shut up about your personal experience and ask him the question which, because you've talked about it for so long, he knows exactly what it's going to be and is ready to answer. "Stuart you were on Fist of Fun and I remember watching that with my cousins, I was talking to my cousin about a year ago about this actually and blah, blah, blah..." Still good to listen to though.
Is this comment only for schizophrenics or can anyone join in?
So true his laugh and voice irritates me as well

Congrats on the 200 Stu. Heard perhaps 180 of them. Glad I didn't subscribe to the pound a show idea in the early days.
Everyone can start to look a like as you age . After moving away from my home town I found myself letting on to people I thought I knew just because they looked like someone I knew from home. There's about 7 face types and put in the famous off the telly and you find yourself mistaking Selwyn froggit look a like as an old friend in tescos

1 hour 4 minutes in Goldsmiths references Lee having his cake and eating it, having his cake and eating it, having his cake and eating it. Lee has been doing a lot of that lately. I think that why he's let himself go a bit :)
Having his cake AND eating it? I didn't think that was possible. Custard gannet.
Sting has let himself go .
He couldn't cut the mustard on a panel show.
Nick Flynn . You spread Mustard, fuckin idiot. 😊
it was ref to stew quoting...was it lee mack? on comedy vehicle. stew wore the criticism as a kind of sarcastic penant of defeat, cuz he KNOWS that he doesn't appear on panel shows and why he doesnt/wouldnt. He almost never participates in rap battles either, or at roasts.
I think you ruined the joke.
yup....i've read too many gratuitously aggressive comments today and its effected my ability to let things be wrong. Dont read any comments on peterserafinowicz's Sassy trump vids- you'll come away wishing for a good pandemic to sweep through.
