I played basketball on almost all outdoors basketball courts in Morocco during my Peace Corps years in the early 80's. The basketball shoes I came with from home were soon worn out, but I has seen many sandals with used tire soles. I found a sandal-maker in Ksar-es-Souk, where I taught English and ask if he could re-sole my basketball shoes. A few days later, I picked up and paid, a small price compared to new shoes. The new soles were from the side-walls of old tires, maybe 1/4th to 3/8th depth. For the next two years of my Peace Corps years, a year back home in Minnesota, and even a couple more years in San Francisco in the Navy, those were the best basketball shoes I have every had. I could run, cut, jump, post, defend, drive for hours on outdoor courts and felt less to no pain in my knees and feet. The shoes finally wore out when I made a cut driving to basket and the leather side along the outside of the shoe was shredded and beyond repair. So, I bought a new pair of shoes for indoor courts and brought my older pair to a shoe-repair shop to see if they could re-sole with old tire. They said they could, but when I came to pick them up, they had used a softer, midsole material that dissatisfied me, but they said they couldn't use old tire for some unexplained reason. As they now were, the re-soled shoes were ok on the outdoor courts but not nearly as great and long-lasting as the old shoes re-soled in Morocco!
