I made the layout for some of these shots! It's the first time I'm seeing the complete product and I must say it looks absolutely gorgeous! Awesome work dear colleagues and friends!!!🤯😤
The best part of watching this movie was probably watching my dad watch it. This was his childhood unfolding on screen, and every time a local commercial or an old building came on he'd just slap his leg with the biggest smile and say "I remember that!" "I went there!" I even remember stuff from my own childhood from back then, because that spaceship rocket slide in the park was still up in the 90s.
It was such a treat working on animating this one, even if it was just for a summer. That technique is special and I can't wait to see what else people will do with it.
May I ask the technique? I understand the basics of rotoscoping; did you guys take each real person frame and draw upon it accordingly? Looks absolutely lovely btw. Fascinating to me how the shadows remain consistent and natural; that must not have been easy
I am excited to say that I played the extra “short hair hippy in bell bottoms” in the beginning of this trailer!!! I filmed it way back in 2020 and I’m very excited for this movie to finally get released, this is my first film credit!
If you lived in Houston in the 60s or 70s prepare to have your mind blown! It was pretty emotional seeing all those places and activities I grew up with. The Astroworld scene especially hit me hard...
There was a recent screening at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. I watched some of the neighborhood scenes thinking "I thought that stuff only happened in our little 'burb bubble near Garden Villas"
even though i lived in the 90s, the spirit of 60s somehow were still present in the 90s. watching this made me revisit the feeling of being a child again.
What an incredibly wonderful, engrossing film! The animation style creates a fresh sense of wonder and discovery for viewers born long after 1969, and dream-like nostalgia for viewers who lived it. For those who haven't seen this movie yet, the "boy going to the moon" plotline is actually secondary to the sizeable chunk of run time lovingly devoted to re-capturing the childhood realities of typical suburban kids during the high point of the Apollo era. Amazing.
I love when Linklater has done animation, from the surreal artwork of Waking Life to the graphic novel style of A Scanner Darkly. But this looks great, combining both the surreal with the real.
A Scanner Darkly's animation was a clever way to really bring across that paranoid feel that Phillip K. Dick's works have, also it makes the fictional tech feel both believable and somehow organic, something which cgi almost always struggles with. the scrambler suit is the best example of that. I'd honestly love a direct adaptation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep in that same style.

This is the most accurate representation of my youth I have ever seen. Linklater gets so many of the details right. If you were between the ages of 8 and 15 in 1969 this is a must-see.
I love this style of animation, it's particularly realistic, simple but charming, and Richard Linklater understands this. Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood looks lovely, I'll check it out.
This movie was especially nostalgic even to us kids that grew up in Clear Lake suburb of Houston, TX in the 80’s. We actually went to Ed White Elementary, the same school portrayed in the movie! Although it was the 60’s during the movie, Space was still very much a big deal for us. Most of our Dads worked at NASA or a contractor that did business with NASA such as Lockheed, like my Dad did. It was super realistic. The landmarks of Houston portrayed from the Astrodome to Astroworld were spot on. I found myself shedding a tear in the sheer nostalgia of it all! Wow! Great job Linklater!
See my comment above. I was living in El Lago in 1969 and attending CCHS, the only high school in the Clear Lake area at the time. We recently celebrated our 50th HS reunion in Nov 2021. I was Class of 1970. We combo'd up with the Class of 71 because we had to postpone a year due to COVID. The class of 1971 was the last total Clear Lake area graduation. Clear Lake HS opened up for the 1971/72 school year and the kids living in El Lago had to start going there.
Looks amazing and brings back memories. Lived outside Houston in the late 60's. Went to UT and was an actrice in Austin for forever. So, so, so glad for everyone involved!
What a cute movie! I saw a video where this film got recommended and watched it without big expectations afterwards, because the premise and the style sounded and looked interesting... It was a big positive suprise :) A hidden gem in the vast library on Netflix
SCANNER DARKLY is one of my favourite adult animations. Very psychedelic. I'm sure this will be a classic just like that and SCHOOL OF ROCK and FAST FOOD NATION.
Looks pretty cool, especially since I grew up where the show takes place. If you notice the Ed White Elementary school in the first scene, it is in El Lago, TX - just east of NASA JSC in Houston. The neighborhood portrayed in the show was home to most of the early astronauts and their families. Still is today too.
Fantastic work - beautiful, heartfelt and hilarious in many parts. I will rewatch many times. Great job to everyone involved that posted here, I would love to have had a hand in any part of this.
Once again Richard Linklater blesses us peons with another cinematic masterpiece. And it's really just Jack Black narrating Linklater's childhood in Texas. I was engaged from the opening shot. Just like I am with all of his work.
Whoa, this looks so good! Also, despite only have seen the trailer, this film has similar animation styles to linklater’s film Waking Life. Also, cool linklater, is collborating with Jack Black again after so long.
I watched this movie, the movie is awesome, worth watching...story narration and characters portraying, screen play, and finally the man on the moon episode of 1969 is speech less and dramatic.
Richard linklater! Now this is gonna be good! Whenever he makes an animated movie, his art style is usually very unique. I still haven’t watched waking life on Disney+ but I will eventually however.

I was one of the lucky Space Brats that lived 7 years in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida (62-69) south of KSC and then in January 1969 moved to El Lago, Texas above Clear Lake and near the Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center). There were quite a few astronauts that lived in El Lago, including Niel Armstrong who lived on Woodland Drive, down the street and around the corner from where I lived on Biscayne Blvd. In the summer of '69 I was between 11th and 12th grades at Clear Creek High School, League City, Texas where the astronaut's children attended high school at the time. My father was a TRW (now Northrop-Grumman) Engineering Manager and the TRW offices were across the NASA 1 highway from NASA in Nassau Bay. TRW built the descent engine on the lunar module and the abort guidance system on it. At the time it was the world's only throttle controlled rocket engine. Apollo 11 was a wild time there in July 1969 as we had media from all over the world there. Richard L. did a really good job with this script because he covers just about everything a kid living in El Lago would go through during that time period. I belong to several FB groups for Clear Creek High School and The Kids of Apollo. I was a 1970 grad from CCHS. We were all there living this. I have shared the news about this film with them.
