Raj Kapoor is infamous for pushing traditional boundaries. Especially in the way he portrays women in his films. All the women in his movies were brave and bold and rejected traditional norms. You must watch Bobby, it was one of his greatest movies with his son Rishi Kapoor in the lead and Dimple Kapadia was the heroine. This film broke all sorts of records, but it is a musical masterpiece. Sadly, Rishi Kapoor died earlier this year from cancer. Rishi was a great actor and I'm sure you'll enjoy watching him on screen. I don't know too much about this particular film, but I love this song. I used to sing this when I was a child - I'm an 80s kid and also a (South Asian) Brit :)

In this movie, the girl belongs to a tribe. The boy is from city. He is rich and educated. From ancient history , in all tribes, girls were free to choose their partner , no one can supress them. Same is shown in song. Till date, the tribal people used to follow their customs and traditions. In ancient time, women used tobe the head of the family , also thay had importance in society . But in later times, invaders including aryans started suppression of women .

@@TheCamerad that argument is based on that tom alter (tall blue eye white guy)is mandagini(actress )big brother and that short guy was there for his marrige with mandagini ,and this function where this song is there village tradition where girls can choose there life patner,who they gave that garlen in there neck meaning they choose that guy as there groom,and mandagini choose narendra(rajiv kapoor)in that function as her life partner,but that short guy was shocked to see that bcz there late parents were fixed there marrige in there childhood,so he suppose to think mandagini will choose him,but when he saw she choose another man over me,he start argue with mandagni brother (tom alter)how ,why she choose her bla bla bla bla etc,

Nepotisme is much prevalent in Bollywood. Even if they’ve no talent, the offsprings are being shoved down the audience throat. Some get better as their career progresses, like Sunjay Dutt, and others just fade away, like Rajiv Kapoor. Currently, there’s been lot of talk of nepotism in Bollywood and trying to change that to talent based.

A lil trivia for Matthew, RTGM ("Ram, Your Ganges is Polluted") was Mandakini's debut Bollywood film. Raj Kapoor cast the (then) 22-year old Anglo-Indian from Meerut opposite Rajiv Kapoor, his youngest son for his cherished swansong project. This was a pretty popular movie with some great songs.

I think one of them (shorter) is the hero's friend or something and he thinks the girl or her family is trying to lure or hoodwink his naive pal so he's taking it up with the girl's dad....I think that's the gist of it, been way too long since I last saw it :)

@@TheCamerad The shorter guy is sort of promised to marry the girl but the girl here marries the stranger from town by garlanding him and that sets him off in a rage to confront her brother for this breach of promise.
