It's my favourite. Rekha is the daughter of the famous Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan. But father and daughter were estranged.

Rehka and Aishwarya each held their own performance well in the respective versions of Umrao Jaan. Rehka won best actress at the National Film Awards but Aishwarya was only nominated
But for me Aishwarya won. Have also seen Rekha's performance but can't match Aiswarya's. Aish is on a much higher level.

Rekha has impeccable timing.. the pace depends on the director, storyline and editing. In this movie they clearly all came together.. including the medeival lighting with candkes which finally gave Rekha her due onscreen.

The authenticity and artistry with which it captured this time in history in its portrayal of Umrao Jaan is ahead of its time, making it truly a cult classic. Rekha is a Legend ! No leading ladies like this anymore in Bollywood. Iconic!
Umra o Jaan is a very hurting and painful real life story from over 300 years ago. Her brother was in debt to lenders and he couldn’t pay them back, so they were about to kill him but she offered herself in his stead, to work for them. So she was trained and turned into a Tawayaf (dancer-cum-prostitute, becoz dancing is haram or a sin in their faith). So she saved his brother and her entire family from the money lending mafia of that gone era. But then she had to work as a Tawayaf, always saving money and dreaming about returning back to her family, she spent most of her youth paying for her freedom however she could (I always get teary eyed thinking about her pain and helplessness). Eventually after many years she is finally set free from her brother’s debt and allowed to go back to her family, which makes her really very happy and she goes back to her family home, only to refused entry, they break their ties with her becoz she had been a Tawayaf totally ignoring the fact that it was becoz of her sacrifice that they were left to live another day. Now after her family abandoned her there was no place in the entire world that would accommodate her. She’s gravely heartbroken and clueless about how to get ahead in her life, the world was unsafe for an ex-Tawayaf still in her prime years, to live all by herself, she could be abducted and sold off in the slave markets abroad as many girls if her region before her had been. So she goes back to the place where she bought her freedom from and the first song she sings after coming to that brothel was heart wrecking one for me “YEH KYA JAGAH HAI DOSTON?”
WHAT IS THIS PLACE FRIENDS, WHAT IS THIS CORNER? THERE’S NO CONTROL OVER THE HAPPINESS, THERE’S NO HOLD ON THE SORROWS.” She sings with a straight face but being abandoned by her family and her thankless brother, anybody could feel her underlying pain, fear and whatnot.😰🥵😢

I agree with you, remakes are never as good BUT Umrao jaan remake was just as good as the original. Everything about both the movies are just gorgeous, excellent! The music, the lyrics, the dance, the acting, costumes, sets all ., really, really good. Both Rekha and Aishwariya were excellent in their performances and they were different , though playing the same character. You may guess by now , I watched both the movies countless times. Only comparable movie is ‘ The memoir of a Geisha’
Rekha is the one n only actress who made it against all odds. When she was introduced to Bollywood, she was fat n dark but that didn't stop her. She wasn't discouraged n she never let negative comments her goal to become an ace actress which she was born for. She went through tragic moments in her personal life but she stayed strong n evolved as an ugly duckling to become a beautiful swan in Bollywood industry. This Umrao Jaan is masterpiece of Indian movie...casting, directing, music etc everything wow ... none can produce such masterpiece with simplicity n pure beauty now.
Nobody can match Rekha. Her performance is par excellence. Should not be compared to anyone...not even Madhuri

And yes, I agree with your statement of remake. Remake to me is just like the combination between copying and modifying. Especially for the modifying part, I would say it's good because it improves our creative skill, but however the original one will still going to be better because it's pure and more representing the era when the song was produced 🙂

Rekha is the original Umrao Jaan. Aswairay came much later and her performance was not close to Rekha’s. Rekha is the icon.
The English subtitles absolutely failed to do any justice to the beautiful poetry.
