Among the composers present in the program is François Couperin, whose "Les Baricades Mïstérieuses" opens the album. Written for harpsichord in 1717, the piece is composed in rondeau form, emblematic of the selections that follow by composers Robert De Visée, Michel Lambert, Marin Marais, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Jean-Henry D’Anglebert, Antoine Forqueray, and Jean-Philippe Rameau.
Also featuring mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, baritone Marc Mauillon, and Myriam Rignol on viola da gamba.

Lucky you. I don't get to concerts any more. Not that it matters when you live in a very small philistine society; the concerts are few and far between and very seldom in Rotorua, which must be our most philistine city.

And few things could be more boring, Ross. I grew up a stone's throw from Eden Park but never went there until a friend dragged me. I spent the time watching the seagulls. They were far more interesting.
I adore this performance, the unhurried quality and the taking time to hear the exquisite harmonies. It never ceases to amaze me how modern this piece sounds. It seems everyone is drawn to it, whether they are fans of classical music or not.
Yes another timeless baroque piece. The beauty in the simplicity is what draws people in, I feel, in the same vein as Bach’s Prelude in C.

I absolutely Iove this piece! First heard it on guitar a few decades ago. I've heard many versions if it since. For me, this is hands fown the ultimate version. The harpsichord,l begins slowly, then slowly, quietly the theorbo comes in, both rise in volume. Jean decouples the long strings and the theorbo shines through. Finally they both relax to the end. Brilliant. Jean is a superb harpsichordist, but he's also a fabulous arranger.

Jean Philippe Rameau, and François Couperin, absolutely vital to music, the 2 most important French composers of the 18th century!!! An outstanding piece from Couperin, the chord structure alone is emotional, let alone the counterpoint!!!!! Absolutely charming!!!!! ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

This must be the supreme example of how two musicians can be in sync with each other. The tempo varies wildly, as it should when exploring all the harmonies, yet every single note is absolutely in time with each other. It's exquisite.
Music teachers should show this to their pupils when they are starting to learn how to play in duets or chamber music or even just in an orchestra. It's all about listening.

The most important thing is practicing together your own interpretation. And of course the eye contact instead of a conductor.
@@argi0774 At this level of chamber music, there isn’t that much rehearsing, practicing, or discussing an interpretation. Sure there is some, but it is mostly listening to one another. You are not too late if you listen. Performing music is mostly about listening. Eye contact helps for some visual cues, but you can see how they aren’t necessarily looking at one another at all times.

I can't tell you how much joy this performance gives me! It is absolutely uncomplicated and makes room for listening. It makes me very happy to watch these performers communicate with each other.

I have heard so many versions of this evocative piece and never gets old but richer. In this case the pairing of the harpsichord and sensibility of both virtuoso is enthralling.

I can never understand how Beecham could have likened the harpsichord to the sound of "skeletons copulating". This performance is just uplifting.

@@paulkamill2119 I think, in Beecham's time there were not real good harpsichords. The modern built instrumens body was too thick and couldn't resonate well.

Jean Rondeau is undoubtedly one of the best harpsichord players out there. The energy, passion and delicacy he plays with are very hard to find amongst other interpreters.
this is one of the most breathtaking interpretation of my favorite music of Couperin, I think the most beautiful playing of any piece literally, gentle, heartfelt, unique in the perfect togetherness of two amazing musicians. It goes straight to the heart of the world.

Enjoying the exquisite performance on November 11th, 2022, the day F. Couperin was born. Can't think of a better tribute than your unique performance. Now I agree with the people who believe that with this piece, Couperin created a form of musical illusion, the equivalent of a musical fractal, three centuries before fractal mathematics was actually discovered.

Decades ago, I fell in love with this piece after hearing E.Power Biggs' recording of it.
This rendition of it, though different from Biggs' performance, is now also among my favorites.
The warmth of the theorbo, the tempo and pace, and the delicacy of feeling bring a refreshing flavor to this masterwork.

I think Dunford couldn't see much of Rondeau's fingers and Rondeau's body language gave little away of his exact timing. I think Dunford was intently listening. Quite adorable actually.

It's not a mystery - playing music together is like making love; it's better if you've done it before and you get into it with feeling and intuition. You could literally do it in the dark :-)
@@barkebaat You make it sound easy. It's not. Indeed it's extremely rare to have 2 musicians this in sync with each other. This is the type of performance that every musician aims for, often gets close, but rarely achieves.

This piece made me want to learn everything about the Harpischord. When I played it on Pianista I was surprised how modern it sounded, granted everything in that game is arranged for the piano. Still Couperin was ahead of his time in a sense.

Brilliant! Many musicians charge through this like an express train passing through a station. Even though the score says "vivement" I don't believe it means fast, or lively, but perhaps...alive, which is just how this interpretation makes me feel. The Wikipédia entry goes so far as to say, "La pièce allie donc une certaine vivacité avec un caractère mélancolique et mystérieux", "vivacité" meaning acuity, rather than speed.
