    Hey Flutterby,
    The D5200 is a great little machine that packs a big punch. We will posting quite a few more videos very soon on using the camera getting the most from it. Auto focus in still is pretty easy to control, in live view you will have a square in the screen just move that to where you want to focus using the mutl selector switch, also in your menu you can have a few different settings for autofocus from single point to continuous focus for moving subjects that will keep it in focus.

    There are two sets of options, depending on whether you have chosen NTSC or PAL as your outputs. we are based in the UK so are PAL, which offers us 50p and 25p. if you are using NTSC, then you get 60p and 30p

    Thanks, that was very helpful! Regarding recording audio, I would say that -12dB is a region to aim for, but clipping (distortion) only starts at 0dB. The prevailing idea is that the higher you can record the audio, peaking say at -3 or -6dB, the better your signal-to-noise ratio. Going over 0dB is definitely a no-no in digital, as distorted signals cannot be recovered. I look forward to an "intermediate" tutorial at shooting video with the D5200!

    Hey Juan,
    If you change the white balance settings that will change the kelvin scale to warmer or colder ie: tungsten wb balance is 3200k so will be a lot warmer than say shade which will be a lot cooler more blue roughly 6000+k, you can set your own preset one and save it for a specific project go to white balance and then get a gray/white card and then pres "pre" this will save your preset and then just name it. Another way of checking is get your live view on change it watching it.

    Is there a way to have autofocus in video mode without having to keep depressing the shutter? I'm using a d7100

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  10 років тому

      Standard Nameo this is a difficult one, because there is an autofocus function on the d500, but i am not sure about the d7100. on the d5200, you can only shoot video through the view finder. in order to change the autofocus settings for video, switch to viewfinder, press the i button and select focus. when in the viewfinder setting you will see options AF-S (single focus) or AF-F (continuous focus). perhaps it is the same for the d7100....

    Want to mention that I just received a mini HDMI to VGAA/V Adapter, that has a 3.5mm earphone jack, and allows me to monitor the audio with earphones. Really cheap from China. Thought I'd take a chance, since I believe it was under $15.00.USD...Just plug the mini HDMI connection into the camera, and earphones into the earphone jack.
    While monitoring during recording, utilizing a shot gun mike, there's a bit of an echo, but with a wireless lav connected, it's surprisingly good. (I did use a Beachtec XLR connector, that allowed me to boost the audio.) Didn't try without that Beachtek adapter yet, but will try to tomorrow.
    Listening to the recorded audio, was truly great.
    Hopes this helps any question re; the lack of earphone jack problem.
    Regards,
    Ron

    But I have an almost-stupid question (bear with me; I'm new to all this!). Should I be using the standard lens that comes with the camera (after adjusting all the movie settings of course)? I went and bought a 50mm 1.8 focus lens for portrait shots. Can I use that? Thanks!

    • @southbanktrousers2
      @southbanktrousers2 9 років тому +3

      +Melissa Aflalo you can use any lens, they will have the same properties and differences as when you shoot photos with them. high aperture (such as using the lens at 1.8) becomes something to be more aware of when filming as you may need a greater depth of field due to moving elements

    Hello, so I just got the D5500 and recorded my first video of myself, watching it back I realized that it always had to refocus on me as I moved, and it wasn't like I was walking, I was just moving my head while talking and it still did that, how do I change that so the autofocus focuses on everything on the screen?

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  9 років тому +1

      Shem Goltz yes, the best thing to do, is set the focus by putting something where you will be, and then with the lens to manual, so that the focus doesn't continually change..

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  9 років тому

      Sidra Hi, i suggest you shoot on 720 and normal quality instead of high quality. I can understand that you want to keep the file sizes small, but in my experience keeping the amount you shoot to a minimum is more effective. Remember when you have uploaded it to UA-cam, they will generate different versions with different resolutions, so people can watch in places where the line speeds are quite low. good luck! let me know when the videos are uploaded...

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  8 років тому

      +Humberto Abdo Hi Humberto, ok this is a really good mic. the important thing is to know that there is a small compartment where the battery goes with two tiny switches in it. both the switches must be to the left (0db). after that you set up the Mic on the camera and look at the levels on the back of the camera. I am assuming you have a d5200, but most cameras have a similar set up. go into audio levels and switch to manual, then set the level at between 8 -10. 8 is less sensitive, but will give you reasonable sound quality. what you don't want is to have the Mic too sensitive, as then you get hiss and background noise. Practice a little so that you are confident for the big day. If you want more control, go to my video here: ua-cam.com/video/1kcdpJF1Oig/v-deo.html , which shows you how you can listen to the audio as it goes into the camera. basic rules are get as close as you can and try to avoid echo. hiss is less of a problem as it can be removed, but you can't take out echo.

      +CameraWize Photography I was aware of that switch after watching a video, but I don't quite understand how to change it... All I can see is a transparent lever that seems too hard to move. Hi, generally speaking the interlaced option is a bit of a con. with the p setting, the frame is changed 24 times a second. This can have problems, particularly with aliasing. The interlaced option is supposed to address that, It appears to be faster, but in fact it changes only half the frame each time. in other words 50i changes 50 x half the frame per second. this effects the quality of the video. Most people avoid interlaced if they can.

    What lens would you recommend for videos? and...what should the picture type be set on at the top of the camera? (like action/portrait etc). I change is sometimes due to brightness, but I wonder if there is a constant setting.

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  8 років тому

      Hi, it depends what you are shooting, but a 50mm f1.8 would be good for most things. I find that I tend to shoot on shutter speed priority when I can. It is really important that the shutter speed is twice the frame rate. so if you are shooting 50 or 60 frames per second, then you need to have shutter speed at 1/125, likewise if you are shooting 25/30 frames per second, then you need to be at least 1/60sec. If you set the shutter speed, you can change the ISO and apertures to match.

    the 18-55mm is a pretty good all round lens. The 18-105mm isn't as good. It depends on what kind of photography you want to do. Generally speaking if you get a 50mm f1.8 , 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm, you are pretty well covered.

      @NikonD5200Channel  9 років тому +1

      +Kishore yadav Hi, PAL and NTSC are different settings for televisions. In UK and most of Europe TVs are PAL. In USA they are NTSC. If there is a chance that you will put your videos into a TV, I advise that you use the appropriate system, which makes the 'which is best?' question moot. they are actually both about the same.. The difference between i and fps is that for fps the camera will take 50 frames per second - that is 50 separate frames. that is like old film reels, which have separate frames. i is an old way of trying to seem to have 50 frames per second. i stands for interlaced and effectively takes half a frame per second - every other horizontal line. the best for slow motion is 720/50 fps. check out the video: ua-cam.com/video/O4hyXofjEQA/v-deo.html

      Hi, the best way for you to do this is to set your focus mode to AF-F ( use the lever to switch to the viewing screen, press the i button and the focus option is bottom line second from the left). However, this may not work very well for you, as the lans may be quite noisy when re-focussing. I would suggest setting the focus beforehand and then switching to manual, so that the camera is constantly focussed. you will have to move into the area which is in focus, which takes some practice, but means there will be no refocossing noise...

      yes, set it so that the peak sound hits 12. for example, i usually have it in 8-9 setting, so that when the speaker raises their voice little, it peaks at 12. it is always good to test the sound first if you can..

    Hi bro! Your video was very useful, I did a video recording and this tutorial was the best. But now I need your help. When I want to made a shot but in camera using live view, the program is set and I do not know if it's possible to remove the program.
    How do you erase or set the camera so you can made a shot, but using live view and the values for video recording doesn´t interfere when you do a photography with the live view? (I hope you can tell me. By the way, I was watching you from Mexico).

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  8 років тому

      Ok, you can take pictures and shoot videos using the liveview screen. because you use two different buttons for video and stills, you can shoot each on different settings. Ideally, if you shoot on the M setting, for Manual you can set the ISO, Aperture and shutter speed for stills and for video. the additional setting for video is framerate. You cannot take a still image while you are shooting video, but you can use the same settings. If that doesn't answer your question, come back to me..

      Hi, it's me again!
      I'm going to do more experiments with my camera and I will come back and tell you.
      But in other subject, I would like to ask you about flashes. In did about SB 300 nikon flash.
      I have camara Nikon D5300, recently I bought a SB 300 Flash, of NIkon. I do not know if with this flash is possible to shot (in manual, I always use manual), in superior ISO 100, like 400, 600, 800, 1000, ... so on. Because I'm going to use with no much light and for images in movement. So when I do a shot and press the botton down full, I've seen that is delay, is not instantaneous. It's normal? I'm not sure, but when I used the internal flash I haven't seen that delay. Why? And how can I avoid that delay? Please, help me!

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  8 років тому

      it sounds like there is a delay because of the poor light. if it is dark and the camera finds it difficult to focus, it will use a small pre flash to help focus. that will slow taking pictures.

    Is it possible to use the zoom while shooting video by using D5200 and D5300?

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  8 років тому

      yes it is, but there are two issues. Firstly that the lens may need to refocus and the noise of that might be heard in the sound track. Also, if you are using a long zoom (i.e. going from a long zoom to a short zoom number) that could affect the aperture. for example the kit lens is f3.5 at 18mm, but the will be f5.3 at 55mm. that could affect the way the video looks.

    I would stick to PAL. Although they are changing it to DVBT, most Tvs will still run on PAL. in actual fact, if you convert your videos to mp4s it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, and remember that many videos are watched on computers these days....

      firstly I would use a tripod to keep it steady, probably shoot manual and set the metering to centreweighted. I would shoot a test to check of there was flickr at 1/50 second 1/60 second and then make sure that I was shooting at that speed. with the shutter speed fixed, i would have the lens near its sweet spot for aperture and then drop the ISO as much as possible. good luck.

    Hello,
    Great video! I wondered if you could help. I've shot a few test videos on my D5200 but when I import it into Final Cut Pro, pixels and blocks of colour are everywhere. I've searched about this problem and it's apparently quite common. I need a HD converter to adapt the MOV files created into a file that can be read by common editing applications. Are there any you recommend? What do you edit your videos with?

    I know I am very late on this but after spending countless of hours to search the UA-cam for the best Vlog-camera, my wife reminded me of our old Nikon D5200. • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  4 роки тому

      Hello Richard, well you wife is right, of course. I shoot all my videos on my Nikon D5200 and it works very well. However, for vlogs I would recommend that you don't move around too much. The autofocus will work and follow you around (set it to AF-F), but it can spend time searching for focus and that is very distracting. If you can, keep to a focal plane going across the front of the camera, rather than towards and away from it, or do as I do and set the focus with a reasonable aperture (f/8 at least) switch focus off and then try not to move around too much. Also, it is worth getting a better lens if you only have the kit lens.

      well it is safe to say that you can't do it all with a single lens. for nature i would look at the nikkor AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5 5.6 IF ED lens. for video check out the nikon 35mm f1.8 G AF-S DX lens. the 70-300 can also shoot macro - though it isn't designed for that. remember your lenses with last longer than your body, so don't be afraid to invest in good glass..

    • @NikonD5200Channel
      @NikonD5200Channel  7 років тому

      If you attach the microphone to the external socket, then you will get some noise as the autofocus lens focuses. You have two choices: you can either focus manually, which takes practice, but can be effective, or you need to record the sound separately. You can record sound on a specific recorder or with an app on your mobile phone. Depending the phone, you can use your microphone. There is an advantage to this - you can get the microphone much closer to the sound source so it is better quality. then you synchronise the sound and video in your editing suite.

      Fuat Rhiyouhri ok, i have looked at the Canon, and i would say that as a stills camera the nikon has some real advantages - the lenses are better, the file size is better and the view screen is better. for video, they are pretty much the same. one advantage of the canon is the touch screen, but that is all.

      Wani Ray ok what do the noises sound like/ if it sounds like the lens refocussing, then you need to switch the lens to manual. if the noise sounds like something inside the camera, then check the levels of your sound recording ( you should be aiming for 12 when recording). if that is ok and you still hear the sounds, then you may have problem.

      According to the internet India is PAL. it is always good to shoot the best frame rate you can. When you upload a video to UA-cam, they will produce several versions of the video, so that people can watch them on mobile devices etc. so produce 1080 x 25fps if you can, if not 720 x 50 is fine.
