    Amazing the difference in technology between the old motors and the new ones. More power and less smoke. Although they clean up after a few seconds. Nice vid!

    I love the design of Australian locomotives. We had imported about 50 of these classes in the 1960s. Nostalgic to see them working in Australia

    Used to love the feel of the hot smoke standing on the bridge at Cheltenham station before they rebuilt it. The drivers would sound their horns for us as they passed underneath.

      They are very efficient when they are in top notch at cruising speed, you won't see any smoke then. Being old when they are accelerating they are under a lot of load, hence the more than normal dark smoke

    When the turbos spool up then the exhausts seem to clear nicely at least on the 44s. 4 stroke any day for me. Just prefer the sound.

    Looks to me like signs of old tired engines that probably could use some repairs. Concerning the diesel vs gasoline argument, diesels rule. No doubt about it. It is a shame that there isn't more of a diesel selection in the American auto market. About all I ever see are big diesel trucks here. What ever happened to the small diesel cars and small diesel trucks like seen in the 80s?

    • @ashleyroyal8105
      @ashleyroyal8105 7 років тому +8

      modern diesels restrict the amount of fuel injected to the combustion chamber while the turbo pressure builds up , the old alco's don't have this technology , so when the drivers open the throttles to the stops there is a period when the engines run very rich , thus the black smoke , once the turbo pressure builds the mixture is correct and the ridiculous amount of smoke disappears , good operators will put the throttle on slowly , very old jerk pump technology compared to computerized unit injectors..

    • @nomon95
      @nomon95 7 років тому +2

      Ashley Royal,,your comments are the same as mines,,,,absolutely in concordance,,,the turbo is a problem specially in 4 stroke diesels,,,in Alcos this is just the problem,,at idle,,,the charger doesn"t run,,,,if the engineer applies full throttle,,,,a lot of fuel goes to the cylinders chamber,,,but wirh a poor amoount of air,,,and the result is a lot of smoke,,,full throttle at low rpm in Alcos locos dont give results,,,,the best solution,is accelerating the loco by steps,,,,then the charger gain in rpm,,,and a better air pressure go to the cylinders,the torque is better,,,and then pass to a next step,,,and if is neccesary to full throttle(notch 8),,Alcos at full throttle with the engine in high rpm,,,the chargerr worrking in correct mode,,,with load,,,the smoke is low.in Argentine some Alcos were changed the charger with other better,,,and the smoke lows a lot.

    I've never seen Alco PA's in operation before. That was cool.

    • @dennisb9157
      @dennisb9157 6 років тому +1

      Sonny Dean They are modified ALCO locomotives. They do have a resemblance to the PA locos, but they are not PA units. These locos are built with cabs on both ends of them. This is very commonplace in Australia and Europe.
      Auran Trainz simulator has lots of these engines from NSW, AN, SAR, VR, etc. Of course the simulator does not properly replicate the huge amounts of exhaust the real locos belch out. Horns are also wrong in the aimulator. Oh well.

    along with planes, I reckon these are much more efficient per tonne than your average car - plus they do it in style!!
    The other point being is that if your car is belching black smoke out like that, then the driver behind you might crash as he cant see!! Not the same issue for a Loco!!

    Some of those looked like somewhat modified Alco FA's. Are they?
    I noticed the G&W colors, too. I grew up in the 60's in the middle of their original territory, south of Rochester, New York.
    It was just the single short line then, servicing a salt mine. I remember thinking a small road like that couldn't last. Of course, it was the big class I lines that bit the dust; New York Central, Erie-Lackawanna, B&O... sad.

  • @choirboyfromhell1

    And I thought we had a graffiti problem here in the USA. At least the punks don't get the locomotives. Alco suffered from a primary design fault in it's 251's. (and 244's). The air intake is against the "Vee" of the engine, therefore negating the cooling effect of the intercooler. Hot intake air, plus the changing of direction in the air flow always made Alcos poor breathers.

      +Klote3241 How old is old? Switzerland have 50 year old diesel locomotives that don't blow any smoke.. (Bm 4/4) even under large loads. Furthermore, they use less diesel than the new Am 843 locomotives when moving a similar load.

      +Jim Jardine Efficiency.

    • @SupernalOne
      @SupernalOne 8 років тому +1

      +Jim Jardine steam engines are about 10% efficient, diesel-electrics are rated at 25% or so -- but both are heat engines, burning fuel to make hot gas expand. electricity from power dams would be great, though railroads would need to be retrofitted with overhead cables everywhere, and power can't be transmitted huge distances without loss, so the Plains States might have trouble with hydroelectric power generation. We can only increase efficiency, reduce consumption, obtain supplies locally, recycle resources, breed less profligately
