4:07 Damn that diesel locomotive is letting almost as much smoke out the top as those steam locomotives did back in the day.
All environmentalist: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Me: NOW THATS A LOTTA DAMAGE!!!
When an Alco goes by, it shouts, " Are you not entertained?!! Are you not entertained?!!
Over here in the UK we call excessive power 'thrash' and excessive exhaust 'clag'-both are appreciated by enthusiasts
Childhood fascination at 8:41 CSX multiple units..coming around the bend..
Wow, those sure are some dirty diesels! Awesome video!
@CoasterFan2105, have you seen this video ua-cam.com/video/N3VjUp9oz8o/v-deo.html
Actually all that black smoke is just airborne carbon particles ("soot")--harmless, except on toast. It's due to an overly rich fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders before the turbo gets a chance to spool up and deliver the proper amt of air ("turbo lag"). Alco used Woodward Governor fuel controls--who also supplied fuel governors to early jet engines, though not the same kind!.
Interesting info, but only small correction what about the soot - as long as I know, soot as itself actually is relatively harmless, but toxic and carcinogenetic substances produced during incomplete burning of diesel (f. e. aromatic hydrocarbons like benzoapyrene, benzene...) are caught on soot.
Saw a guy recently videoing some railroad activity from a perforated-steel pedestian overpass. Locomotive just beneath overpass belched out a plume of black exhaust all over the guy's self-described brand new, $300., impossibly WHITE, white skinny jeans. Pretty sure he had a different opinion on the harmlessness of soot😆
630 was a beautiful unit. Those old ALCOs always remind me of the Penn Central days.
4:04 “I just wanna be like Big Boy”. 😭
Alco 4:05 takes the cake. Hands down good ole Alco. Great video !
I've seen UP newly restored 4014 Big Boy burn a cleaner stack than some of these diesels.
5:07 Conrail just kicked in, yo.
That Conrail GE towards the beginning just had a flat out blown turbo
Honestly I would just about bet money it didn't have a blown turbo but rather either a injector that was trying to stick or some oil that was getting past some piston rings and ultimately getting blown out into the exhaust manifold where it was igniting. I've seen U-boats do the same thing for the same reasons. I could argue that it could be some aging wearing valves allowing oil/unburnt diesel to make it's way into the manifold which would cause the same reaction. That said if a turbo is blown it'd be belching out thick black smoke/flames pretty much continuously. Not spitting out smoke/flames kind of intermittently like that ex Conrail C40-8W was doing.
Awesome vid! Love it! Nice fire out of the stack on CR 7343!
Ya know, I live near the NS meadville line and Wnyp oil city branch. It's really cool to see these reuploads of old railroad operations from my childhood. And in HD at that!
Dobbies Revenge the clips I was referring to in particular were from 2010. That was 9 years ago and things were way different back then. So that’s what I mean when I say “old”.
Those Alcos notorious for lots of smoke.
Makes up for all those smokeless videos (boring) I have watched. Lights, camera, smoke'm if ya got em. Tier 4 rest in peace! Great video. I'll have to watch it again to get another wiff of diesel.
At 9:40 what sweet sound . Just churning up those diesel. Nice video thanks
A 2th part is welcome ;). I love the Dieselengines in USA. In Germany we have the "Ludmila 232" but this engine isn't comparable
So many extinct things in this video-Conrail blue, NS roadrailers, the CSX YN1 paint scheme (mostly). Crazy that the Alcos are still alive and well on the Delaware & Hudson.
When I get in my TDI jetta every morning I aspire to be like this lmaoo
Thanks for that great video, good to see the old Conrail engines , thanks for all your efforts in the making of ths video, great job.
Not much says "America" more than older locomotives, especially ALCOs, belching smoke into the sky. Plus the scenery in these little towns is great to see. Awesome job on these videos!
Still cleaner and more efficient then any battery powered cars.
5:36 only an alco 😂
One of my favorite videos of trains! I love all the throttling and smoke; woop!
This is awesome! You know,EVERY time I see those ex Belt Railway of Chicago C424s they are belching plumes of black smoke.Even in still photos;also giving them kudos for wearing Nathan P 3s!!!
Absolutely fantastic. Loved every second. Sat here in the Uk knowing I will probably never see these for real...but loved it
The first clip has the two loudest SD70MACs I’ve ever heard. Also, the two clips from 8:40-10:05 with the SD40-2 and SD60 leader are pretty loud too
Those smoking diesels are like honorary steam locomotives because I suggest that diesel is "liquefied coal".
Sorry, pal. Steam locomotives, on the whole, are a lot cleaner than the diesels featured here.
@@cliftondean4333 Nope, watch some of the"Big-Boy"videos,these things are horrible at best compared to diesel ANYTHING.
Mabry Anderson I had a work truck that gave out the black smoke liquid coal
nothing smoked and chugged like the old U-BOATS.
U25Bs were about the best for this.
Bring on the howling diesels belching smoke! :D
Love the ALCOs
Even though the locomotive is diesel, by the smoke you can evidently tell the ghosts of the old steam locomotives still run the iron road.
Yep. That’s the part that make these “Romantic” - they have *soot,* just like the old steamies used to have.
Those 4 cycle diesels smoke a lot more than the 2 cycle ones do. We had some old Alcos on the line were I worked years ago. At night, they would belch fire out the stack under a load.
4:05 Only from an ALCO!
Really enjoyed watching your video, thank you.
Wow nothing runs dirty like an Alco Century Series, apparently. Not even the older RS3's!
Would you rather see one or two diesel trucks for every boxcar on the highway? Or a car for every person on the road for every passenger on the train? Looks to me like the smoke is a better trade-off for efficient transportation. I guess newer locomotives might be better.
The new Siemens locomotives (Amtrak) seem to have less Soot than the P42s.
Bummer.
Nice!!! Love the awesome smoke spewing out! 4:10 is that an old cast P3 I hear?
Best train video ever
Excellent Video my Friend.
I love the smell of locomotive smoke.
I grew up with the C&NW in.my backyard, walking the old creasoted ties with spilt tar in pools on a hot July day, dodging the old ALCO RS3s switching the yard, music to my ears and those memory making smells!
Nice starter with some Sand Patch climbin'!
Great video! Up close, smokey and loud. Bravo!
Wow. You could upload anything and it's always top notch and worth watching. Keep up the throwback content.
I commonly see the Metrolink MP36s spewing out black smoke as they pass by.
conrail quality is spittn fire
Brilliant... ONLY POWER AND GRACE...
Awesome! Love all the smoke
Good locomotives hard at work, great video!!!
I love the smoke obscuring the wind turbines! Take THAT, you greenie weenies!
It’s cool how the smoke tornadoes out of the exhaust stack!
'Conrail Quality' *is on fire*
Gotta love Alco
Excellent video!
Great trains and great video!
1:43 Fire breathin dragon
EMD train is gorgeous
Nice video !!!
I like locomotive with smoke, that's looks Awesome
Love this vid! The sound of those first 2 SD70MAC's is awesome...must have been something standing next to them!
This video is super great and Amazing
GREAT STUFF!!!!!
Nothing like the smell of dinosaur bones!! Feed the Coals to her Capt.
Diesel burning, smoke blowing & cargo delivering. At 2:56 that lil helper that comes through is almost wearing the old Burlington Route paint scheme. At 3:24 the heritage Delaware & Lackawanna power is AWESOME!! Another stellar Central Penn Rail Productions offering!!
nothing says performance like spewing unused fuel into the air
They need to keep the exhaust lubricated so it doesn't rust in the winter time.🤥
If you try to duplicate the fuel burnt to pulling power ratio, if you had all electric locomotives you still got to get the power from somewhere? If you got to have a product anywhere in the world and it has to come from another part of the world there will smoke behind it! No getting around it.
Love those smoking Alcos.Years ago when I was Little kid and lived near the Maybrook line of the NYNH&H RR they were using Alco FA1 diesels. You could really see the black smoke when these diesels were starting off or when they were pulling hard up a grade.
@ 4:01...talk about 'throwing shade'...
Love the stealth mode.
"Squirt the squid ink"!!
Where'd it go?
Great action!!
4:01 This dude knows exactly what's going on.
Great video! It's really cool to see train action in various locations.
Looking Good 😮👍🏻🚂🎩
This video is teir0+ rated by the EPA
love it!
more please
Nice video
426 has sweet sounding horns
Loved it!
Better than the British cold start vids on here
Love the ALCOs. Show offs!!!!
This is awesome👍👍👍👍
gotta love them Alco's century units
Awsome action guys
had to wipe my pc off after viewing! Breath deep spotters!
Man 7343 was crazy, shooting flames and everything
Dude....... that's what I'm talking about...!!!!! 🙌 👍👍 😁
Great vídeo
Wow that's amazing good job
Pickup trucks:I can create more smoke
Semi trucks: No I can!
???: amateurs
Semi and pickup trucks: what was that punk?
Locomotives: AMATEURS!!!!
@4:05 Alco locomotive rolling coal.
An Excellent Video. ♡ T.E.N.
#4573's horn sounds like an F59's horn.
5:14 That second unit, I haven't seen 1 of those high nose locomotives in over 30 years. I didn't know some of those were still in service.
I remember seeing Alco Century series engines roll past my hometown on the former BC Rail back when they were well maintained and running clean. Their horns are the sound of my childhood.
BACK THEN, THE RAILROADS TOOK CARE OF THEIR LOCOMOTIVES!TODAY, THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT TAKING CARE OR THEM! AS LONG AS THEY ARE MAKING MONEY FOR THE RAILROADS, THIS IS ALL THE RAILROADS CARE ABOUT!THEY WORK THE LOCOMOTIVES HARD ,WITHOUT ANY MAINTENANCE AND CARE.HENCE THE BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THEM!THIS SHOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE TO THE PEOPLE WHO LLIVE AND BREATHE IN THEIR SMOKE! LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE SHOULS BE A PRIORITY FOR THE RAILROADS TO KEEP THE EQUIPMENT PROPERLY MAINTAINED.ABD IF THEY DONT, THEN THERE SHOULD BE SEVERE PENALTIES IMPOSED ON THEM WHEN THEY FAIL TO GIVE THE LOCOMOTIVES THE RIGHT MAINTENANCE THEY NEED! THERE'S NO REASON OR EXCUSE FOR ANY OF THESE LOCOMOTIVES TO SUFFER LIKE THIS! THE RAILROADS MUST GO BACK TO GIVING THEM THE PROPER MAINTENANCE AND KEEPING THEM CLEAN,AS WELL AS CHANGING THEIR AIR FILTERS AND KEEPING THEM TUNED UP! NO EXCUSES!
@Terry Wallace or ya know Alcos just smoke as they take off and the turbo spins up, same with GE and EMD. All diesels smoke as they start up.
I had Mack trucks that used to blow black smoke like that
