The Dead were unable to get the Oakland Coliseum in 86 for the New Years run. Huey Lewis got there first. So the Dead fell back on the tried and true Kaiser. Howver, at half the capacity, many couldn't attend. Like 7 or 8 thoudand. I talked to someone from Philly who said there were a lot of disappointed dead heads sitting at home that New Years.
That being said, this was my favorite of 7 New Years runs. It help to live in the Bay Area and have disposable income. The Kaiser was the site of 25% of the shows I attended (126). I loved the Kaiser. It was home for me.
Thank you Kevin. I was 18 years old, made my way here from Boston with my two friends Cliff and Steve. They have since passed away. I would love to have shared this find with them. Funny story. Steve actually brought a carry suitcase. Cliffy and I had backpacks. Watching him having deal with that suitcase was just so amusing. He was a great guy and he enjoyed it also! I miss them both so much!!!
IWT! I know what I'm doing for NYE 2023 now! Thanks! The section with the Nevilles was so much fun.
It's fun looking back.was there All H J K show s. Are awesome 🎇💖
I was at this show! One of my favorite of all time. This run of fours shows at Henry J Kaiser was the only time I saw the dead on the west coast, so epic.
Hey Now those were some fun times
✌💜🎶🌈

i caught the chinese new year and mardi gras shows at the kaiser they had the acrobats from china open the show and that was so cool ill never forget the lady on the unicycle flipping bowls on her head.those were the best shows! i loved kaiser with the park in front epic times.the dead were on fire
One of the best venues!!! The saw the last three....
ah to be seventeen again,so many good memories of the Kaiser shows partyin all nite sleepin in a tent in the grass in park and waking up in morning and doin it all over again... lol
I was at this show! It's probably one of my favorite shows I attended in that time period (1985-1990). The post- Drumz/Space sequence is just as fantastic as it was 30 years ago! The Kaiser was such a wonderful, intimate venue with a vibe all it's own. I really miss that feeling of heightened anticipation between house lights going off and the first song! We were in for the night! *sigh*!
Thanks for the upload!
Minor point, but there was no Drumz/Space for this show...just Drumz/Hamza El Din :-)
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Do you know where America is mentioned in the Bible ??????? Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!!
Watching this again after 5 years. It truly is wonderful someone filmed this.
And I remember the next night- New Year's Eve- listening on KFOG at my Berkeley apartment with my friends- high; painting doodles on the bathroom wall; wandering on Grant Street during the intermission; knowing I was creating memories with my close and dear friends. And I could listen to these tapes anytime I wanted to!
35 years later I can watch this anytime I want!

I was also at this show! There are certain rifs that Jerry plays, and they are so familiar, you know you've heard them before. I was on the floor, only about 20 feet back. Danced the entire night with my other friends. 🎉❤😂
From Patti Cornell when I first met Jerry and Bobby. In the fildhouse in university of Vermont
Jerry is happy to be alive here, it shows. Spectacular setlist, thanks for sharing this crispy board.
Nice improv by Bobby on Johnny B Goode….”He could play that guitar like a bat out of hell”! Sweet!
This has long been my favorite Iko > Man Smart. I didn't realize it was on video. Thank you!
I was there! What a GRATE TIME!!
Sending love to you all from Patti Cornell
this show is an anomaly during this "recovery" time period. it's so on and flowing. a rare x-factor show we saw so rarely after 85'
Another gift from Kevin. I was there.
The 2nd set is epic. Stellar job all around. Thanks Kevin, et al.
Wow Jerry is tearing it up tonight!
Thank you Kevin.
This captures the spirit of the 1980s Grateful Dead
TMNS is off the charts!!!!
#TodayInGratefulDeadHistory! #IWasThere!
I wonder how many cried during Stella Blue? I bet a whole bunch.
OMG THIS SHIP OF FOOLS. it reminds me very much of the Peter rfk 89. I know I know but it does
Ship of Peter, Black of Fools🤷🏻yeah, what’s the difference 😂 a killin’ Jerry ballad does it anytime, at any slot in the set list.
I ❤️a first set High Time( check Buffalo 90- was there, thank you- though i was still too young to realize what an insane show i was experiencing!)
Check Jerry at that point in the summer of 90 tour- he was as happy and healthy as anybody could hope him to be.
…and me at the tender age of 19, just taking it all in. Life-changing fun.
k, i’ll shut up.☮️❤️💀⚡️😇🤟🏻AC

Thank you for this upload! I have been waiting for more shows from this run in 1986. Does this mean we might see 12/31/86? That would be a gift. We just passed the 30 year anniversary of this show and I was there with friends on our first trip from NY see the boys in California so you know we were pumped. Some of those guys are no longer with us which makes videos like these more valuable. Life goes quickly folks. Does anyone know of footage of David Crosby's set on 12/31/86? The audio is on UA-cam and is amazing.
Thanks! Also, thank you You Tube for allowing us to relive these experiences. I may be old but I'm not dead yet and I love this stuff. Thanks to all who make it possible!
Hey look at how young bob was?? I was young then also!!
This is good..
Best Althea ever. Seriously. And it's not just Jerry - Bob Weir is all over the Althea and really contributes. While this is a good sounding board, it doesn't capture how absolutely loud the crowd was after Jerry's last solo. The crowd is also really loud after "this space is getting hot". This video and the soundboard that backs it beats any audience tape, but you gotta hear the crowd's reaction to the Althea. And it was only the second song. A really great BIODTL (30 beats!) > Greatest Story too. I've had tapes of this show since January 87 but rarely listen to 2nd set because I'm not a fan of the setlist. Dropping Lost Sailor was a crime against humanity. Iko Iko and Women Are Smarter are the same song with different lyrics. First set is great - this video w/soundboard is great.
Bobby ALWAYS contributed...😂
He is quite possibly the best rhythm guitarist around, but rarely gets the credit he deserves. Being one of the most lucid members of the Dead bears alot of weight, being Jerry's bagman was a responsibility he didn't need but did because of his love for the man.
Jerry being raised to diety status is why the man is gone, not saying your doing this but he wasn't built for that speed.
RIP Jerry and thanks to the whole band for so many great years.
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Chapter by Chapter / Verse by Verse !!!!!!!
Anyone else hear Jerry say " loose with the truth baby it's your style" as opposed to fire? Awesome Althea though. Jerry in the zone
Thank you for this. Any chance of seeing David Crosby's accoustic set from this run? It was amazing.
does anyone recall this being aired on HBO at the time? I'm not positive it was this show but I think so as I know there were additional drummers and it was right around this time.
I was there.don't remember a thing.some dude kept dropping liquid on my hand and like a.dumbfuck I kept licking.thanks for.posting.it lifts some of the fog.at least I know.I was there!!
I'm going back to hell with out a bucket 😢
