    What should also be mentioned is that travelers from the EU can use their SIM card as normal and do not have to activate a separate dataplan. Since Iceland is a member of EFTA, there are no roaming charges. There is also free wifi on all Flybuses and all other buses operated by Reykjavik Excursions. In most buses there is a USB charging option as well.

      But is there still connection to mobile data in the rural areas?

      Iceland has incredible coverage to mobile networks, even in rural/remote areas. Of course this isn't to say that you won't experience dead spots but for the most part, if you have a SIM card, you're good to go.

      @@miliba On the Laugavegur trail I had good cell phone reception at least at the campsites Landmannalaugar, Álftavatn and Þórsmörk and sometimes on exposed hills. On the Fimmvörðuháls trail there was no reception until we got close to Skógafoss.

    AT&T international Day pass…$10 a day and I have the same plan that I use in the USA…unlimited data..messages…calls..etc. And they will only charge you a maximum of 10 days…or $100 per billing cycle. Worked great in Iceland! And what was truly amazing was that you have service in places in Iceland that you never thought could ever be possible

      @IcelandwithaView  Рік тому +2

      It's WILD - the coverage in Iceland is so good even though most of the country is uninhabited/rural!

      @@IcelandwithaView I was driving on I believe road 550 and at the very least you have a 3G signal..I also had a FULL signal on a snowmobile trip on F35 on the glacier..Incredible!

    Just an FYI to people who also own and use sim cards from any EU country, the EU's "no roaming charges" programme also extends to the non-EU countries of the European Economic Area so that includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. For instance, when we used our Irish sim cards in Iceland, it was as if we were still in Ireland (no roaming charges etc).

    Greetings from Puerto Rico! I just watched your video of Wifi and internet in Iceland. You can add the eSIM option that is downloaded electronically to the cell phone and is activated when you arrive in the country you are visiting. It is an electronic SIM card and not a physical one. I went to Thailand in March and used the eSIM from the Airalo app and it worked super well for me. The prices are reasonable too

      @IcelandwithaView  Рік тому

      Thanks for the tip Jose! You're right - eSIMs are much more convenient than physical ones!

    As always very useful tips Jennie.Last Dec 2022 I was in Iceland and used 3 to activate the roaming when WiFi was not available.
    For travellers using this method be aware that you inform your provider about the travel.
    In Iceland use WiFi when available (to save on data)
    However I found trawifi an attractive offer .
    I will give it a try when I visit Iceland next time.

    Great timing on this video as I was just trying to figure out what we were going to do in May for our phones. Last year we lived in the UK so it wasn’t a problem, but now we are back in the states it’s a whole new ballgame. We are heavily leaning towards doing Trawire that includes your discount so thanks!

    I only experienced problems once in the 3 months I was there. And we lived in the East. My Danish sim card worked just fine on the internet. There was a few dead spots here and there, but there is in every country. They have a perfectly fine phone connection up there. It's not the Saharan desert 🤣

    The tour group we used provided a mobile WiFi device that we used in the rental car and we could take with us into our lodging. Just don't drop your phone on a rock on day two of a ten day trip like I did, otherwise none of that matters. Watch out for that wind and hold on tight!

    I recently went there in June and my phone didn’t work there and I only was able to use it with wifi in places…
    With the sim from the airport, does it change your phone number though, or is that just locked to the phone and then you switch sims back when you get back to the airport?
    Having a feeling I might be getting sims from each country I have to go to lol

    We went with the SIM card method. We bought 10GB Nova SIM cards from Duty free for ~$23. Way cheaper than the $10 per day our US carrier wanted to charge us. The only down side is you can't receive SMS and telephone calls. iMessage worked just fine to allow us to stay connected with our family.
    Edit: I should also include that we had coverage everywhere from Snaefellsnes to Jökulsárlón with the exception of the hike to Svartifoss.
