  • Here is part two (of two) of an excellent, professionally produced, documentary film about the Hastings to Ashford Railway, sometimes called "Marshlink" (because it traverses Romney Marsh), made by BCL films of Hastings in 1987.
Part Two is mainly a round trip over the line on board 203 001 (formerly Hastings DEMU No. 1011) operating as a four car formation and in most shots sporting a heritage Southern Region green livery (although it can also be seen in BR blue and grey).
Also in this part can be seen a summary of the various DEMU formations in use on the "Marshlink" in the late 1980s.
Unit no 1011 (203 001) no longer exists having been scrapped several years ago but some DEMU rolling stock has survived and a vintage train made up so some of this sometimes operates special excursions from Hastings, see: www.hastingsdiesels.co.uk
This film is copyright to BCL films and shewn here without permission BUT, as far as I can tell, BCL films no longer exists (cannot be found on the internet) and, as far as I know, this footage is unavailable to be purchased or seen either via the internet or locally. Therefore, I beseech the forbearance of the copyright holders - the tape (VHS video cassette) that I have is deteriorating and if I don't digitise it now it will not be possible to watch it for much longer. My only objective in posting this here is that I and other people who share this interest can continue to see this historic footage in the future.

Really enjoyable that. Had a lovely trip to Hastings mid 90s on a 205. Lovely stretch of line with units of great character. Memories stoked. 🍻

I enjoyed that. Interesting and informative with some nice trains in nice scenery in a nice part of old England. I wish some other lines were covered in-depth like this. Great stuff.

In the war years, I and my mother had to get home to Hastings and our train route was drastically changed because an air raid that had damaged track somewhere in the system. Our train, from Charing Cross I think, had to stay at Appledore Station for hours before we could continue our journey.

Miss those old reliable units, recall 203001 nee 1011 very well. went like a rocket and you could nearly always make up time. In the winter of 87 she saw service on her old route, Hastings/Tonbridge, along with 1113, 1111, and even a DMMU usually confined to the Ton/Reading route, along with 4CEP 1500 ( nee 7153? ) Thanks for bringing back some happy memories to this old fart of a railwayman. I'm glad I'm retired, and don't work the new souless plastic perambulators that they try to pass off as trains these days. 1113 nearly went to the Ashford 150 do, but alas, a very bad oil leak stopped her a few weeks before, and so far as I know, she was sent to Snailwell...1011 didn't do much better, being made into sandite 1067, as a 3-car. St Leonards Diesels apparently have the "spare" trailer not converted. Along with sandite 1066, ( ex 6S 1002 vehicles ) 1067 was scrapped by the cowboys at Gwent Demolition, from memory. In Hastings yard for many years were the two power cars from 6S 1003. I recall they still featured the original "Real English Sycamore" veneer in the 3-bay saloons...Sad losses indeed. 1113's original power car and later centre trailer were dumped at Mountfield Sidings for a good while. There was no obvious body damage and I can't recall why the Tadpole was made up now. Getting OLD !

Enjoyed watching that. I lived in Appledore until 1984 and was a regular user of the line.. there had been a lot of canges om that line in the 6 or 7 years prior to this video being shot..most noteably the loss of the manual gates. I remember the gates at appledore were closed via a large ship style wheel in the signal box. Gatekeepers were employed until the late 70s/early 80s The gatekeepers for the minor crossings each side of appledore worked out of appledore making a staff of 4 including signalmam and the 2 accross the marsh nearest rye were linked to that stn

    Again, very many thanks!
Viewers will also enjoy another UA-cam channel, Hastings Diesels, which include a Hsstings to Ashford cab cam ride.
Of all, I found the first Part of this pair the best: very much because of the Rye Harbour and Dungeness branch coverage.
    Again, thank-you
Ps I wonder if this line could be used for steam-hauled services . . .
    Summer-time at least?
