- Back in 1900 the town of Hastings was rapidly running out of water. It had grown quickly towards the end of the Victorian era and all the traditional sources of water had been developed. The Borough Engineer was tasked with finding a reliable and an additional
1,000,000 gallons of water per day. He found it in the Ashdown Sandstone lying beneath the Brede Valley.
Two giant steam pumping engines were installed in a purpose built engine house. They were manufactured by Tangye of Birmingham. Each engine was able to lift the water to the surface for purification, and also to pump the cleaned water six miles to storage tanks up to the high ground 500feet above Hastings.

They don't brede 'em like that these days😂
Amazing, hope to see more of this subject. Stay safe in this Corona virus. Brian Ingarfill
Thank you very much for this! I knew of the pumping station in Hastings park, but I had never heard of this! I left that town over 40 years ago and I am trying to learn as much history of my place of birth as I can and things like this help a lot!!!
Another quality video for us, Richard! As I usually come over in the winter (daft, I know), I travel with you around England! Thanks ever so much.
+Laurel Meadows Thanks very much.
Surprised they don't make you wear a hard hat and yellow jacket when you go in there. O near forgot boots with steel toe caps.
Retaining the skills to run and maintain these glorious machines must be getting hard with no diagnostics port to plug into!
I missed this one great to see it.
Is this place open to. Public I don't recall hearing of it only know of the engineerum in hove
It tells you at the end of the video, open on the first Saturday of the month and bank holiday Mondays I think ?
Richard, in your pre-movie, some picture postcards fly around while the compass turns. On one card is the address: Fräulein Maria Schäfer, Nürnberg, Germany. How does this card get into your movie?
How did I miss this for so long. Richard thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Truly amazing little video :-)
