I have a Apple TV and I will say airplay can be very flaky. I use the hdmi adapter for putting zwift on the big screen and works awesome. Plus u need to have the phone plugged in anyways or you'll end up with a dead battery after your ride
Great comparison! If you were watching a video would you be able to lock both devices to turn the screen off and save battery or would the video stop playing? Thanks!
I screen cast from my Win 10 laptop to TV via Chromecast. There is definitely a slight lag and the details are not as good as on the laptop. Shane your geekiness was on full display. LoL
I use a chromecast from my pc and I agree there is definitely some lag. Makes holding wheels in a race pretty tricky. Wish there was something better for pc! or better yet an android version of the game!!
Zwift said that they WILL introduce Zwift in Apple TV natively. Recently, Apple has announced that they have increased the app size limit in AppleTV from 200MB to something like 4GB I think. This was a roadblock for Swift. Not anymore... This was officially communicated from the Zwift blogs, I got via an email notification. My question is how do you connect your ANT+ sensors through the iPhone/AppleTV? I assume it can only work via Bluetooth, correct? Swift iPhone app can control your smart trainer , too?
This video was made prior to them discussing tvOS version. I had to wait for the sound bug to be fixed before hitting 'go' on this video. The latest IOS update adds ANT+ dongle (not USB!) support to ZwiftIOS. This should work for everything but has no trainer control support. Most trainers are BTLE, so that's not an issue.
Thanks for the video. YES the Apple TV connection would be laggier because it is wireless, Your other connection is a direct connect so that would be quicker. :-) So much fun to play around with AirPlay, Possibilities are endless!
I've been running into to trouble with battery life on my iphone while on Zwift, so I keep it connected to a charger while I'm riding. Airplay is the way to go.
When away from home and my Wahoo kickr I've just bought for my at work fluid trainer setup the Apple AV cord/HDMI option and to get away from the Garmin/ANT+ issue I bought a near new Wahoo SC Bluetooth/ANT+ Speed/Cadence Sensor for $35. All bases covered indoor and out. Love the videos
It'll chew battery like any 3D game on an iDevice. Lower screen brightness to save a few %. No idea on actual numbers, maybe Zwift have some figures on that.
Any reason why you went with the 4th generation Apple TV? All my TVs are smart TVs and I can stream everything I need to from them, so I really wouldn't need it for anything other than Airplay for Zwift. Just wondering if I could get away with an older generation and still see minimal lag like the 4th gen in your video. Thanks for the great video!
That's what is on the shelf in the store. It'll allow me to check out the tvOS version of Zwift when released. Smart TVs are typically very underpowered when it comes to processing, and/or run their own OS which then introduces compatibility issues.
Do you still need the extension cord for the Garmin Bluetooth Dongle? I set up the Apple TV, but it could not find the trainer. When I set up on my laptop, I always have the extension take the dongle to just above the trainer.
Hey Shane; great vid as always. Apple TV 4K. Thoughts? Also, any ideas why is Apple TV still in beta testing phase? It's been going in for ages?! Cheers mate.
No news on that front. I purchased this AppleTV for Zwift and it has been obsoleted before it was even out of beta! Hmmmm. Don't hold your breath though. The interface is pretty challenging with just the remote to control a lot of things with. A PC with a midrange to high end Nvidia card is still the best option for Zwift, imo.
Shane Miller is using Bluetooth speed and Cadence sensor any less reliable then a straight ant+ sensor? curious, using my iPad for zwift would be a lot sleeker and take up less room then my pc, though I would hate to lose ride progress.
BLE and ANT+ should give the same experience/reliability. I haven't seen anything saying one or the other is more or less reliable. It comes down to setup/environment.
Hi Shane. after watching this video I decided to go for the AV adaptor option (which I am still waiting for to arrive in the post). The concern I have is when hooked up to a TV it will drain the battery of my iphone 6S in 45 mins (so I have read). Is there any way I can charge the iphone & be on the TV as well ? I know there are lightning splitters out there but they seem to be for charging/audio only. regards, Rod
Shane Miller What I mean, when, for instance with Zwift, you start to go uphill, in the "app" it goes uphill, the smart trainer response with the usual lag, the tv screen shows because of the Apple TV also with a lag, which makes the to/screen more in sync with the smart trainer. So, it could be a good thing, this lag.
Hello from Spain! Nice video Shane. One question. To run Zwift to train like your video, just need one tv, hometrainer (i have tacx neo) and appld tv 4k yes? You can play If you don't have iphone (i have android)? no more gadgets? The home trainer and apple tv paire with bluethood? And the last one, apple tv works in wifi mode? Thanks for the answer
Shane, some TV's now come ready to use with Apps such as Apple TV. Do you have any experience of whether Zwift will work with a built in TV app such as Apple TV or do i need the box of trick because of the amount of Bluetooth devices i need to connect. Thanks
You'll need a proper/real AppleTV to run Zwift. It's dependent on the hardware... and most Smart TVs are pretty lacking when it comes to 3D rendering. They're usually build to stream video (decompress it well)
@@gplama My partner has now joined me this winter for indoor training and I need to double up in the 'Elite Training Facility' :) She has joined Zwift yesterday and is on my case. So reviewing your videos again. Thanks Shane
I suppose one big advantage of AirPlay is you can charge your iPhone whilst using Zswift whilst when using a HDMI cable to connect to your TV it just runs down your iPhone battery.
Are you using Apple converter cables? They are more expensive... but there's a lot going on in them and 3rd party ones can be troublesome. Other than that..... not sure. Keep me posted.
Question: I haven't got any turbo or any equipment yet but really want to get into it (short dark cold winter evenings coming!). What i do have is an iPad, Apple Tv, iPhone (w/ Quadlock) and Garmin Vivoactive HR watch. Will i be able to pair all of these together? So iPad running the Zwift program, to Apple Tv (seems fairly obvious), but then the iPhone on the Quadlock for the Zwift "gestures" and controls, i guess blue toothed to the iPad? Then for more info the HR monitor linked to the iPad too?? And then finally, if i buy a standard, non-smart trainer, and the Speed/Cadence sensor (Wahoo or Garmin), this all has to be paired too? ... vs. a Smart trainer like the Qubo B+ (that Shane recommends) (or anyone recommend a cheaper one that will do what i need it to do!) and then still a whole bunch of pairing??? Any help appreciated. Olly
See my "Zwift IOS on a Budget" video. This may explain the setup for iPad/iPhone/Bluetooth. I'm not sure about the Vivoactive and if it'll broadcast HR.
I know this is a late reply but only found your channel recently. Regarding the Darkness from the AppeTV - You can change the color Space in the Video Settings - Change it to RGB it will match the brightness / colors to that of the dongle. cheers and please keep up the great work
Hi shane, i have a question to the av adapter. I wanna play emulators on my tv via the iphone but if there is lag, i wont buy it. LAMA DOES SCIENCE
What size are your TVs Shane? Thanks for another valuable video!
Those are 40inch. The bigger the better.
That dude really likes riding at 299W... ;-)
Simon Brewer his cadence is too low too lol
why is that? i dont get it..
I’m trying this tomorrow, I’m using iPad and have a 2nd gen Apple TV.
Great video but i noticed the brightness setting on the Iphone to the right was set around 30% @ 7:54. Did you try running both phones at 100%?
They're set low for the camera to pick them up better in the room. Brightness does impact battery life. I'm not sure how much by though.
enjoy all your videos Shane and when i seen a new one up today i thought great he done a lama live on the way home from Adelaide keep up the content.
We did two Lama Lives on the way home.... I just haven't had a chance to get all the footage sorted. I'm on the case! :)
awesome Shane looking forward to it.
Nice set up !
Good video, mate. Go Aussie go!
Great vid! I purchased an Apple TV4, but as of last Thursday I still wasn't getting any audio on Zwift.
Audio will now work wit the ZwiftIOS update released yesterday.
Shane Miller. You're correct and thanks for responding. In haste, I posted before checking the Zwift Community Facebook pages, so my apologies.

Slabs of beer? I had to google that one. In Canada we call it a two four.

Allcam TR940.
Please do a test of the Steam link with Zwift since most of us doesnt use Ios.

How many riders have you seen in a multi rider setting --
The camera seemed to pick up the difference, the direct cable looked quite a bit smoother. AirPlay setup looked choppy by comparison.
Excellent. I'll have to update my wifi/router, and test it against wired too.... but we may see a native version on TVOS soon!

The AV adaptor has a lightening port for charging at the same time. You're good to go.
Thanks Shane.... you just saved me hours of research !!!!!
Hi Shane, the lag on the Apple TV doesn't that compensate for the lag on the smart trainer?
As in add even more lag for resistance changes? Or the lag in power reporting?
Shane Miller What I mean, when, for instance with Zwift, you start to go uphill, in the "app" it goes uphill, the smart trainer response with the usual lag, the tv screen shows because of the Apple TV also with a lag, which makes the to/screen more in sync with the smart trainer. Oh... I get you now. Hmm... Lag is never a good thing. Especially when it's a double negative to make up for something that shouldn't occur.
Shane Miller of course! But when you have it, at least it's sync. Anyways, I greatly enjoy your videos!
Good stuff. Thanks for sharing !
Great fun video
Hi, hope you're well....do you tired zwift on ultrawide?

Yep, both iPhone 7.
Shane Miller thanks. Awesome work!!! 👍
Thank you!
hi Shane, do you have any advice for using the lightning to HDMI cable? it keeps cutting out intermittently.

Yes, but there have been reports it's not all that reliable. Zwift Support website should have the details.

Can you use The apple 2 gen Apple TV to do this? Thank you!
The Gen II is from 2010. It might work... but don't expect a good experience. The new ones are cheap enough.
That was great.

It does now. This video is 16 months old.
Please help me, to connect garmin heart rate belt to zwift on iphone. Thanks,
How did you get the zwift icons to show up on the center of the screen at about 6:22 into the video?
That was beta functionality replaced with the lower bar in later builds.
Shane Miller thank you. You are insanely quick at responding!
Shane, you’d need 2 Apple TV’s for 2 bikers right?
Correct.
can you use ZiOS through chromecast?
Eli, I tried, but Zwift is not a Chromecast app at this time, unlike UA-cam or the Redbull apps. Hopefully a future release
